RE: Smurf Turf in the B12?
Boise St to XII makes no sense now from any standpoint:
1) Market? Metro Size Rank (Population): 75th.
2) Athletics? Football is definitely down from the first 15 years of the new millennium but to pretend its not better than most football programs in FBS (including many power schools) is foolish. Trending downward, though, and that's an issue. Basketball has been slowly trending upward which is a good sign for the future. Overall: Meh to Okay.
3) Academics? It's not a surprise we struggle here, comparatively. Using the recent USNWR numbers (ignoring how "good" these rankings may or may not be), Boise St is in the #331-440 group for National Universities. The only 3 schools below this group are "unranked." Here is the list of Division I schools in Boise St's USNWR group split by primary conference:
AAC: UTSA, Wichita St
ASUN: Central Arkansas, Eastern Kentucky, Florida Gulf Coast, Kennesaw St
BIG SKY: Idaho St, Northern Colorado
BIG SOUTH: Gardner-Webb, Radford
CUSA: Liberty, UTEP, Western Kentucky
HORIZON: Cleveland St, Northern Kentucky, Oakland, Wisconsin - Milwaukee, Wright St
MAC: Akron, Eastern Michigan, Northern Illinois
MEAC: Maryland - Eastern Shore
MVC: Indiana St, Missouri St
MWC: Boise St
NEC: Long Island
OVC: Arkansas - Little Rock, Southern Illinois - Edwardsville, Tennessee St
SBC: Georgia Southern, Louisiana - Lafayette, Louisiana - Monroe, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Texas St
SOCON: Tennessee - Chattanooga
SOUTHLAND: Lamar, New Orleans, Texas A&M - Commerce, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi
SUMMIT: Oral Roberts
SWAC: Alabama St, Jackson St, Prairie View A&M, Southern, Texas Southern
WAC: Grand Canyon, Tarleton St
Grand total of 14 FBS schools out of 110 schools in that grouping with zero power schools.
