It was announced as 39,014. I tweeted about this during the game. I realize we added some seats in the field-view level suites, but there are no more than 100 people in that section.
We could all lose our minds trying to make the Nippert attendance math work so I don't even bother. Clearly, Nippert doesn't seat 40,000 but most in the media have accepted that figure as the gospel truth at this point; it's a "hard round" as they say and with Saturday's attendance, whatever it really was, it's an amazing fan experience. Thanks to lots of national TV the past few years, America is beginning to understand it's pretty special.
An old pearl of wisdom someone shared with me related to churches many years ago was that if the building was 95% full for services, expansion was needed because people wouldn't attend for fear of not getting a seat, or seats together with family or friends. We may be approaching that point with Nippert these days where people believe it's always sold out and don't bother seeking tickets, hence the crowds are often slightly short of capacity. I think Cunningham gets that and is walking a tightrope between the energy of a full house each Saturday vs. an expansion that might change the uniqueness of the venue and result in lots of empty seats when a down cycle occurs.

To me it appeared that about 1-2,000 seats were empty. Perhaps they were sold but no used?

A penalty on Teradja Mitchell for leaping over the punt shield gave Arkansas State a first down, nullifying an Emeka Egbuka punt return for a touchdown. (The Buckeyes were also called for a block in the back on the play.)
“That's unacceptable,” Day said of the penalties. “We've got to get that fixed."
Apparently aO$U coach feels that penalties are a negative and should be addressed.
Of course penalties are "negative"....that's why they are penalties. But it's pretty clear, how often you are penalized as a team has very little impact on your overall success. The data is overwhelming in this regard.
If you give me a binary choice between more penalties or fewer penalties, of course I'm taking fewer. But fans drastically overstate the impact of penalties which are probably the stat that has the smallest correlation to team success on the field.
Over the years, I've personally seen you arguing with opposing fans over penalty calls after close games, or discussing botched calls in game threads. Invariably, each side thinks the refs screwed them over, stalled a drive, cost their team the game. If penalties don't matter, then why argue?
The Arkansas game most likely would have been tied - instead of being down by four - if not for four unforced errors starting 3 yards from the goal line. Did that cost them the game? We will never know - but it certainly changed the complexion of the game in a hostile environment. Last year, Indinia's key defensive player was ejected for targeting, and the complexion of the game changed immediately. Hoosiers are still moaning about that, and you'll hear more about it this year. UC almost beat Georgia, but our center was ejected for targeting. The complexion of the game changed. UC lost by a field goal with 3 seconds left in the game.
This kind of stuff fascinates me, and I unfortunately haven't had more time to research it. Analyzing numbers is my job, so I pulled out my required reading for work, "Turning Numbers into Knowledge" by Dr. Jonathan Koomey, Ph.D. Dig into the numbers, he says.
Most penalty analysis is for the NFL. I did find this:

I agree with these points as they jive with what I've been trying to articulate [poorly LOL]. BTW, our left tackle James Hudson got ejected in the Georgia game and not our center. What made it worse was Metz filled in for Hudson, and well, it factored into the game for sure.

Ok, thanks for correction. If I remember correctly, Metz was a penalty machine that game.
I don’t have time now, but the article in the link I posted shows that it’s not enough to say that you’re penalized - the type of penalty matters as well, particularly offensive vs. defensive.
It’s difficult to argue this point because; 1, UC has lost only two games the past two years; and 2, Fickell’s is very popular. People will agree that refs change outcomes, but it’s more difficult pinning it on a very popular, successful coach.

Probably couldn't find decent parking, and just decided to go to the bar instead.
