Imagine that Rice contracts with Buc-ee's for restroom design and concessions, with the addition of another party more experienced with "beverage" sales.

The novelty alone would pull people to a game who might not otherwise attend.

If the product is good, they might very well return.
(That's both on and off the field.)

Now that is what I would call Unconventional Wisdom!

Buc-ee's quality restrooms would be an enormous upgrade in and of itself.

There's enough unused acreage that there could be an entire Buc-ee's (except for the fuel pumps) on the second level.

Make a deal with them to include iconic Sam-ees owl products.

Hopefully they'll paint all of that in future stages. Do something nice with the columns. Put down that flake floor like they're doing downstairs. The kids need a very cool area to keep them occupied. Build something for them. Upper east would be perfect for it.

Paint?
I cannot imagine them ever painting any of the underside of the stadium or the bricks.
Flake floor?
Haven't seen any changes to the concrete on the concourse level, and not sure what you mean by "flake".
Have I missed something?
The upper east is essentially closed completely to football crowds.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if they barricaded the ramps that go up there.
The track team has been practicing up there.
That's why there are lanes painted and hurdles strewn about.

They're painting other parts of the stadium and it looks great. I wouldn't paint any brick either.

A new flooring will be applied on the downstairs concourses. It's mentioned in the announcement.

Missed that - thanks for pointing it out.
They have to finish all of the other work before that is started, as they are driving on the concourse all the time.

I wonder what kind of flakes?

While I was reading the announcement more closely, I found the place to ask for information about buying space in Flight Deck, which hasn't been available in the usual ticket sales web page.

Agreed. Painting the brick would be a mistake. The point of the red brickfacing is that it classes up the drab gray of the old "bathtub" look we had...which is why I alwatys appreciated the sine waves, despite the regime they came under. It showed how we could jazz the place up with something pertinent, and somewhat unique, to the school.

I liked the sine waves. It was an improvement.

Paint goes a long way. It's one of the cheapest, most effective ways to brighten a place up. Let's face it. Rice Stadium is drab. Paint the ceilings of all the concourses, even if just white. Put that cheap, epoxy flooring everywhere. Not hard to do. Not expensive. That photo is depressing. There's no good reason for the place to look like that. Anywhere.

Painting that drab concrete white would really make the nice brick work "pop out." It would be beautiful.

What we SHOULD have done is gone to the American Heart Association or Texas Heart institute or others and see if they wanted to sponsor a strategically placed section where the sine waves were replaced by an EKG. The only problem with the sine waves is that most people just saw them as squiggly, not very artistic lines. It was a bit like Sheldon's costume where he went as the 'doppler effect'

Painting that drab concrete white would really make the nice brick work "pop out." It would be beautiful.

It would also highlight all of the imperfections in the concrete - from the ones that were cast into it to the ones that have developed over the decades. That still might be an improvement. I, for one, have no negative feelings about all that bare concrete, whatever its condition and however drab some might find it.
Paint is also something that requires recoating regularly.

I'm not saying the underside of our upper deck is as nice as this, but I like it.

That's bare concrete - not painted.

This is what the west side looks like now.
Try to imagine it with a pretty floor.

Copied from the realignment thread.
There is a lot being done to improve Rice athletic facilities.

(07-19-2022 04:29 PM)Houston Owl 2 Wrote:  Just to clarify:

1. Football stadium renovation (Phase 1) is underway to be completed before season. Phase 2 may be addressed following the season.
2. Reckling Park turf installation to be completed before the end of the summer.
3. Soccer team locker room (Phase 1) is underway to be completed before the season. Phase 2 to follow shortly (probably after season) as fundraising is almost complete (i.e. within $10K of goal as I understand it).
4. Track and Soccer Stadium renovation and pavilion to be commenced following soccer season and completed before the end of the calendar year. (Permit approval caused initial delays). Complete resurfacing of track, jumping pits, runways and throwing areas) Location and size of "pavilion" still to be determined.
5. Woman's basketball locker room renovation to be commenced and completed shortly (i.e. before season).
6. Tennis stadium renovation should be underway before the end of the calendar year based on existing major gift (and pending permit approval). A large amount of funds are available but it is still being determined what the next step will be with respect to improvements.
7. Volleyball locker room renovation (Phase 1) completed but additional renovation work to be commenced following the end of the season.
8. Operational budgets are being addressed with additional funding for travel and recruiting to be in place by the end of the calendar year.
9. Travel budgets being currently addressed with plan to announce project by the start of the academic year.
10. Issue of "slots" for non-revenue sports being addressed with immediate revisions for non-revenue sports with some revisions implemented for the current academic year.

I'm sure everyone is aware of the President's recent meeting with the head coaches and the announced commitment to review and increase budgets.

It's not like nothing is being done to improve the situation.

Not much else I can do, given the way that this board's software works, and we can't load images directly (only links to images posted elsewhere).
Theoretically, if you click once, it takes your browser to my WordPress page, and a second click will enlarge the image to maximum resolution.
