1 - Memphis has had recruiting violations in the past, meaning that they are under the NCAA's microscope. Unlike certain bluebloods such as UNC and Kansas, they get the book thrown at them.

2 - Penny was an AAU coach with no college coaching experience.

3 - Memphis has been pulling in blue chip recruits left and right... fair or not, that's going to draw some scrutiny. We all know there is some tom foolery involved with the recruitment of nearly all 5-star talent.

4 - Larry Brown was brought onto the staff. He had his own violations less than a decade ago.

Not a Memphis hater, and I hope they pull through this. But no one can say they didn't see this coming.

i agree. it also sounds like quite a bit revolves around wisemen - we all knew that was a cluster, as it was going on. sounds like its coming back to bite them.

Maybe they can lawyer up like UNC who ran fake class scams for 20 years and get the "Carolina Treatment"?

Whatever it was, they just need to claim that all students had the same dishonest opportunities as athletes so therefore the NCAA has no jurisdiction. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools can then give them a slap on the wrist probation like they did for Kerliner. Easy-peasy.

Memphis probably not on big 12 list for expansion anymore.

Quote:the amended notice of allegations charges that data from a computer hard drive belonging to a former assistant coach was not preserved. The university's response indicated the computer belonged to Mike Miller. "A subsequent forensic examination revealed that the former assistant men’s basketball coach’s computer hard drive was formatted on June 5, 2020, and as a result, the data on the computer was deleted," the amended notice of allegations states. "The Institution failed to conduct an adequate investigation into why the computer’s hard drive was not preserved."
Link: University of Memphis charged with multiple Level I violations as part of NCAA's investigation

A good computer tech could read what was on the formatted disk, unless all of the old data received multiple overwrites from a program like CCleaner. Deleting and formatting does not remove old files, it just makes them harder to find.

True---(I suspect they can get the data if they really want it) but I think the NCAA's trying to say the act of reformatting in and of itself represents an instance of failing to cooperate. If I were Memphis I'd just hire lawyers and take the NCAA to court. The NCAA basically folds like a cheap suit every time anyone uses the legal system. Their selective enforcement track record and lack of proper procedure generally ends up being very difficult to defend in court.

I have seen a few posts like this and I ron’t get it. If Memphis was or is a B12 candidate, its due to their ability to draw fans and viewers. Both have been pretty good for Memphis and that is all that will matter.
However, it is cheating situations like this, along with NIL and power conference entitlement, which is driving me away from being a fan of college sports.

Upside is all the cheating and it’s only a single first round NCAA game that will need to be vacated. None of that pesky success to mess with taking off the books.

Why would you voluntarily add a program that isn't capable of success without cheating? Memphis isn't in the B12 discussion otherwise.

That attendance and great tv ratings is gonna take a hit with the losing the probable sanctions cause, Ron Mexico.

Where’s TripleA at to tell us this is a nothingburger? He usually flocks to the scene whenever the word “Memphis” is dropped around here.

Funny how literally everyone except the folks in Memphis knew some shady Penny stuff was going on.

Ha! I respect Memphis for their basketball accomplishments, but I don't think they have the same kind of money SMU has... and that wasn't enough to snatch Mac from UNT. Factor in the impending NCAA penalties (scholarship limits?, post season tournament bans?,... who knows), and I think the Memphis job becomes kind of hard sell.

But I have to wonder, will Memphis keep Penny, or look to change direction?
