I hope both will return next season. But I'm not sure there is anything more to accomplish for Allen at NMSU, especially if NMSU wins the WAC tournament, goes to the NCAA tournament and gives Allen a chance to impress the national audience.

I will just be happy in Jans sticks around another year, Rice returns, and NMSU keeps the nucleus of its developing roster. I have high hopes for Chi Chi Avery and Mike Peake.

Also keep in mind, Darrion Trammell and Cam Tyson are still considered sophomores. So, Seattle will still be tough next year.

Rice and Allen didn't participate in Senior Day on Saturday. I think both will return for their final year.

Neither are Seniors. But it doesn't mean Allen won't still leave early to play professionally. Or, if Allen receives his degree by next fall, it is not out of the relm he would transfer again to play at a more high-profile program. i.e. Texas with his brother. Jans will need to re-recruit his whole roster after the season ends.

But if they happen to win the CUSA Championship, they won't be strapped with a bad 13 seed in the NCAA Tournament either. NMSU might actually be seated in a more winnable matchup than playing a top 4-5 team yearly.

Yes, they will. Might want to look at previous CUSA seeds. Let me know the last time CUSA had a 1–12 seed.

2017 had MTSU as a 12 seed. So not too far off from the current year. I expect CUSA to have a 12 seed again.

Yeah they only had a 30-4 record and 17-1 conference record to get there. I guess if NMSU had more 12 seeds, they would have won a game there by now?

Well we did nearly knock off auburn as a 12 seed if we didn’t choke with the free throws/final shot. The 5/12 matchups tend to have the most upsets so that would probably be the case. It really depends on what version of the aggie team decides to show up: the one where only one guy is productive (the game against Clemson) or the team that works together and shows they can win or be within a score of a quality team.

Bracketology currently has CUSA’s North Texas projected as a 12 seed.

People always seem to use the whole “well you’re in the WAC so of course it’s easy to win” but usually that comes from people outside of the WAC. What people fail to realize is that NMSU had a history of being a winning program, conference championships and NCAA appearances long before this latest version of the WAC.

RE: WAC MBB Week # 18 – Post Season Tournament
We are a program with a winning history. We are 1 of 2 schools in the WAC to make the final 4, the other is Seattle. The only difference is that we have continued our winning tradition. We will be fine in CUSA or any mid major conference out there. We seem to raise to the competition. That’s what winning programs do.

The losses to Michigan State and Auburn still bother me. So close in both of those games.

The 2010 and 2019 were probably the two strongest Aggie teams since the early 1990's. The 2020 Aggie team might also be on the same level, but we will never know how good it was since COVID cancelled the post season. The 2010 Aggie team was much better than its record. NMSU was missing two of their top inside players (McKines and Gillenwater) through much of the non-conference schedule. They finally got up to full strength late into that season and subsequently rolled into Reno taking out the top two seeds (Nevada and Utah State) in the WAC Tournament. That 2010 team had the size, skill, and athleticism to matchup with any P5 program. They just happened to meet up with a Michigan State team that caught fire in the Tournament. That MSU team had an emerging Draymond Green on its roster.

North Texas will not be in the future NMSU dominated C-USA so I am not sure we should count them. The future C-USA will be better than WAC 2.0 but it is debatable whether they will be better than the current WAC. Seems like future 13 seeds (or lower) are in NMSU's future.

Future C-USA (current KenPom rankings)
NMSU (87)
Middle Tennessee (100)
Louisiana Tech (102)
Western Kentucky (112)
Liberty (121)
Jacksonville State (141)
SHSU (152)
UTEP (172)
Florida International (267)

Yes and those wouldn’t be their ratings in CUSA. Flawed data since it’s taking from 3 different leagues.

Agreed. The data is flawed. The ratings would probably be lower. If I were a betting man, I'd say the future WAC will pass the future C-USA in rankings within 5 years. NMSU is leaving the WAC just when they could have benefitted from it.

Yes the WAC is much stronger in basketball now, but we are leaving for football reasons. Having a stable conference in football and getting the CFP money is huge for us. We will go from winning one conference to hopefully winning another. We tend to get quality OOC wins that boost us before conference. Looking at Davidson and WSU this year.

Almost anything is possible in the post season. Despite being down most of the game, UTRGV had a chance to win it on a last second shot. Congratulations to Cal Baptist in winning the opening game of the men's tourney.

Very good game by RGV. Competed until the end with a chance to win. This is why conference tournaments are so much fun, neutral site and anybody can win.

Can’t wait till next year when we are eligible.

Keep in mind, NMSU has managed to scrape up mostly 12 and 13 seeds in what was considered a "weak" WAC. When NMSU wasn't in the NCAA Tournament the WAC Champion got a 15 seed... Cal State Bakersfield and Grand Canyon. Because of NMSU dominance, it elevated the WAC's seed to what is comparable to C-USA. "IF" NMSU can dominate C-USA in similar fashion to the WAC, NMSU seeding will more likely be a seed or two better than what they currently receive in the WAC, since the remain C-USA team "should" have overall a better NET rankings than most of the remaining WAC schools. We will see.

And we’re underway with Chicago and UVU. I’m guessing UVU doesn’t shoot 70% like they did in their 14 point win last time out versus the Cougars.
