I don't know how deep St Louis is, but I do wonder will Penny call off the press when St Louis breaks out of it easily. We do give up some open 3's when we press. But it does help to wear a team down. I can't wait until the freshmen are more comfortable with the defensive side of things. You can tell the difference when we have 3 or more newcomers in the lineup. But we have to play them especially when DeAndre gets into foul trouble.

Speaking of Deandre, most of his fouls have been when he's on the perimeter trying to steal the ball on the press. I wish he would stop reaching.

Somebody needs to get to DW and stress how important it is for him to be in the game. The oldest player on the team should know better !!
He's trying to hard. 07-coffee3

They may press us as much or more than we press them.

They cause 61 turnovers in 3 games while committing only 26 in three games.

They average over 20 assist per game.

They're 24th in FG defense (Tigers 15th)

Averaging 103 PPG compared to Tigers 89.5 PPG

Have a rebounding margin of over 20 per game

They're 15th in FG% while Tigers are 16th.

They average 20 shots per game from 3 with the shooting % just slightly lower than the Tigers. 44%-41%

They have a 2.35-1 assist to turnover ratio compared to the Tigers 0.94-1 ratio.

SLU game info
More numbers:

Memphis played
Tennessee Tech #309
North Carolina Central #325

Saint Louis played:
Central Arkansas #342
Eastern Illinois #347
and some non-division 1 school. Doesn’t even have an ESPN page

The overwhelming amount of their point differential came from their game against that “team” (127-54). It’s not going to be as close as you would have us believe.

Some of those stats include Harris Stowe. Harris Stowe is now 0-6 with losses to Park University, Evangel University, Graceland University, Freed-Hardeman and Philander College.

RE: SLU game info
I’m slightly concerned about these next 2 games. Recent history says just a slight uptick in competition and coaching talent means a big challenge for us. Losing to teams like this has derailed Penny’s seasons before they got started multiple times now.

This team is the most talented, from top to bottom, I’ve ever seen as a Tiger fan. Our 3rd string has players that can start in our conference. These next 2 games will show us the season we are in for I believe and will set the stage for either an improved national narrative or same old same old.

I’ll be coaching while the game is going on. I hope my phone is buzzing with good notifications.

So fairly similar teams as far as rankings go...

Memphis played
Tennessee Tech #309 (won by 24)
North Carolina Central #325 (won by 39)

Saint Louis played:
Central Arkansas #342 (Won by 35)
Eastern Illinois #347 (won by 42)

There's a reason it's only a 12 point line. It's a significant step up in competition but one that we should handle based on our talent advantage. Just don't be surprised if they are right there with us for a large part of the game given our early season struggles the past few years.

Atlantic Ten school. Definite step up. Like VCU, Dayton etc.

We play a school like this ten times we should win 9 (this team).

WKY Friday will be similar.

And, Friday night…NCAA 2d round Lady Soccer v Duke at 530, Memphis v WKY basketball at 7. Memphis at Houston football at 8.

Only a 12 point line? St, Louis is a good team but it's really hard to value teams when they are playing against bad teams. Talent and size wise we are way ahead of them. They are a pretty young team as we are. We do have some core veterans which they don't have much of. We are also playing at home in front of (hopefully) a big crowd at home.

I'm guessing 6-8 at the half, and 20-25 at the end.

You can tell the difference when we have 3 or more newcomers in the lineup. But we have to play them especially when DeAndre gets into foul trouble.

Speaking of Deandre, most of his fouls have been when he's on the perimeter trying to steal the ball on the press. I wish he would stop reaching.

You think they "break out of it easily"?
I'm not so sure.
Easier than the last 2, yes. Easily? hmmm
We are once again #3 in KenPom D-efficiency.
The frosh - especially Duren - are holding their own defensively.
I would like to see more defensive rebounding. But these first 2 games had an unusual amount of odd rebounds - likely due to our size.
This game will be much more telling in a lot of areas.
As for Deandre, he just gets too "turnt up". He does need to get it under control better - but at the same time, his energy and unselfishness drives the team.

20+ minutes: Memphis 4, St. Louis 2
10 - 19 minutes: Memphis 5, St. Louis 10

I agree. I think a lot of those weird bounces are due to really good defense that lead to really tough shots that don't really have a chance at going in and result in oddball bounces off the rim.

With our big guards we should get those long rebounds too.

Nah, when they take those crazy bounces it is impossible to be in position. Typically, they just fly out to the perimeter where the the offensive players are just standing around.
