I would guess he’s already out of our league. Interviewed for the Tech job and is one of the front runners. Alex Grinch interviewed as well, but don’t think he’s a good fit there.

How about Graham Harrell? Is he ready to be a head coach? Would he be able to recruit?

I don't have much of an opinion on him, but I looked up his resume. OC at UNT from 2016-18; OC at USC (west) since then. Year by year from 2016 to present, his offenses have ranked 99th, 19th, 28th, 37th, 31st, and 54th so far in points per game. I don't think he has been involved in recruiting a QB. He had Mason Fine all three years at UNT, and he's started Kedon Slovis since he took over at USC. I think his recruiting ability would be a gamble at best, but I also don't think we could afford or attract a USC coordinator who is proven good at recruiting.

I don't think we could attract anyone who's a proven coach or recruiter. We'll be taking a chance on an unproven coach again. Does Ivan Jasper have any recruiting ties in Texas? Is there anyone here in the state who runs an effective flexbone/triple option?

McGuire is obviously out of our league to replace Bloomgren, as is Grinch. Grinch was possibly in our league the year before we dumped Bailiff, but that was probably the last time. His next stop is HC at either OU when Riley goes to the NFL or another P5 program. I've been looking for another Grinch, and the closest I can find is Zach Arnett (DC at Miss St).

Leaving Baylor to start recruiting for Tech immediately. Clay Helton has also already started working in similar capacity at Georgia Southern. Other teams have seen dismal recruiting under first-year coaches with a short turnaround between the traditional December 01 start date and early signing day two weeks later. McGuire was only linebackers coach, but it's not hard to imagine a day coming soon when hot G5 or non-Blue Blood P5 team loses a coordinator or head coach in early November before they even win their conference.

Scott Frost (#1 on the Coaches Hot Seat ranking maybe?) to remain at Nebraska thru 2022 at least. But his contract has been reworked (which I guess means he'll make less money to go 3-9 in 2022 than he did in 2021?).

As bad as keeping Bloomgren. I heard from Nebraska boosters that Tom O saved the golden boy again.

I think they're getting better. A couple of their losses were to very good teams, and they were close games. At least they're competitive now. It can't be easy to recruit to Nebraska.

Nebraska used a quirk in state law to build its dynasty. There was a law that provided that one student from every county in the state got a free ride to the University of Nebraska. An inordinate number of those turned out to be "walk-on" football players, mostly big farm boys who were o-linemen or d-linemen. They had several guys who won major awards who had been "walk-ons." Because they were technically "academic" scholarships, they didn't count against scholarship limits. Finally, the NCAA ruled that any of those who played football had to count against their athletic scholarship limits. They haven't been as good since.

They called them their 'blackshirts.' They had the most robust 'walk-on' program in the nation. Good defense, Tom Osborne and option football are what made them great.

Of the programs that were last nationally relevant in the 90s (e.g., Michigan, Tennessee, Nebraska, Penn State), Nebraska seems to have the lowest shot of returning to being a true national power (or at least make the CFP). Didn’t they also have some shady recruiting practices with JUCOs, or am I misremembering?

Well, that, and a massive strength program supplemented with some illegal injectables.

Jimmy Lake at Washington is in buyout negotiations right now after he physically struck a player during last Saturday's loss at Oregon. Lake is only in his second year as a head coach and will likely finish the season. There's a lot of high profile openings already, and we've still got three more weeks before conference championships.

And FIU is letting go of Butch Davis. His Panthers' last win over an FBS opponent was November 2019 vs cross-town non-rival Miami. FIU got to a bowl that season by dent of that upset and a very weak schedule that included easy wins over New Hampshire, UMass, ODU, and UTEP. Their only other victory over an arguably competitive opponent was Charlotte. Here's a fun fact I forgot: Miami was 0-2 that year against C-USA, losing the Independence Bowl to LaTech.

Jim Mora the new HC at UCONN. The news was kept really tight; the first leak was just under an hour before it was official. Mora was 46-30 at UCLA from 2012-17; 31-33 in the NFL between Atlanta and Seattle. I can't find what he's been doing since getting fired from UCLA.
