Will Southern Miss Leave Early?
https://www.sunherald.com/sports/college...78471.html

“ The earliest USM could enter the Sun Belt is July 1, 2022. Athletic director Jeremy McClain told the Sun Herald he would not rule out early entry. I think anybody in this situation is going to try and do what’s best for your student-athletes,” McClain said. “There’s a lot of conversations to be had with both conferences on what that looks like, but I do think it’s important to have that conversation.” USM’s exit fees will be the sum of C-USA’s revenue distribution over the next two years, which is estimated at $3 million. If Southern Miss were to leave a year early for the Sun Belt, the school would only be forfeiting one year’s worth of revenue from C-USA, or an estimated $1.5 million.”

RE: Will Southern Miss Leave Early?
Well, eventhough JMU will be not fully FBS status, couldn't they join early and be the extra team in the east to even out the number of teams in both divisions?

They could but they’ll be considered FCS and would therefore most schools if not all would end up with 2 FCS schools on their schedule next year.

I believe the NCAA provided a waiver for the WAC with UTSA & Texas States transition but CUSA would be more likely to get a waiver than the Sun Belt if teams start leaving early.

For all other sports no problem and we could do uneven divisions for a year in football. Not ideal but fine and only a year.

I will be glad to be in the same conference with Southern Miss. We haven't played them in Football in a while, did not meet them last year in baseball, and this year they are not on our basketball schedule. WTH CUSA, who does your scheduling?

Edit...we will be a reclassifying team for 22 and 23 - all games against JMU will be FBS wins or losses

RE: Will Southern Miss Leave Early?
I guess I'm not seeing the issue with "exit fees". If USM leaves CUSA early and loses 2022 conf/media payouts, wouldn't they get 2022 SB conf/media payouts? Or does that new deal for the new 4 teams not apply until 2023?

I certainly like the idea of us leaving almost immediately after hosting the baseball championship. 03-nutkick

USM leaves that would upset a bunch of CUSA fans banking on that 3 mil

I can tell you that Marshall is working towards entering on July 1st of 2022. Pretty sure ODU is as well. Wouldn't surprise me if all four of us entered in 2022. Looking forward to being a part of this conference. I think the conference as a whole is a special group. Its been a long time coming but finally becoming reality.

That's a pretty big deal. I bet we all enter on July 1st of 2022.

Would we not have to forfeit the $1.5M and then still owe $1.5M cash for 22-23 FY?
It’s still $3M total correct?

Or is Judy dumb enough to work it to say it’s $1.5M/year we are here?? Leave early with no penalty. Haha

Any chance that since JMU will count as FBS next season that Sun Belt may work us into the schedule? I’d probably guess no, but it’s a thought

Most everyone has a complete OOC schedule next season, and would have to get rid of a game to play you guys.

I think a lot of what happens next is going to come down to how the Sun Belt chooses to handle your situation. Most of that is in the hands of lawyers at present.

Wonder if it is at all possible to have us in the conference schedule so no OOC games are taken away. Again as you said lawyers and logistics will probably say no?? Assuming we can’t play a sun belt slate, our AD better be working hard to get games

The penalty to leave the league is the forfeiture of the conference distribution for the next two years. But if you leave after one, then while you are still forfeiting both years of distribution, one of those years you will be a part of the Sun Belt, and therefore receiving a distribution from the SB that year.

C-USA gets the same amount of money, it just means that USM loses less
