RE: ESPN Gameday
Two observations related to GameDay and local media. First, Channel 9 is all over this like no UC story ever before. Live reports from UC beginning @ 4:30 this morning on the news block and pre-recorded interviews with both players and students yesterday evening and again today. Their local morning show will be live from campus tomorrow morning with their entire weekday anchor team--not sure I've ever known them to do that before.
Second, while watching their evening newscasts there are frequent advertising spots running for the University of Toledo and the University of Akron. That tells me those schools are scrambling for undergraduate student enrollment while UC's continues to grow each year. Of course when those spots end, the news resumes and I would guestimate coverage of GameDay and our undefeated team filled 15-20% of the entire evening block.
As someone who has a relatively long view of this growth, I can tell you I'm both excited and amazed. There was a time in this city when a stranger could get in a cab downtown on a Saturday and say, "Take me to the game," and the driver would probably get a puzzled look and say, "What game?". You can't buy enough advertising to outweigh the value of the local coverage that has suddenly emerged this year. As a frequent critic of the absence of Bearcats coverage in all media here, this too is cause for celebration.

I recall driving down Wm Howard Taft, looking to my right, realizing there was a football game, pulling over on the street to park, and walking in without having to show any id.
I hope UC has reasonable security for Gameday. Huge crowd + playoff anger + alcohol is potentially a toxic mix.
This event may draw people who never before set foot on campus and UC better be prepared.

Going to be a lot of non-UC fans too. If you ever watch GameDay you’ll see random fans from different schools in the background. I saw some guy who is a Washington State fan post he will be here this weekend with his Wazzu flag as he has attending some 200 GameDay’s in a row.

Who knows, maybe a few XU students show up to experience what a major national university atmosphere feels like?

I'll bet this happens a lot with the ABC affiliates around the country...

If I recall correctly, that Wazzu flag is ALWAYS there. I remember once they did Gameday from a shop, and the Washington State guy mailed the flag to a sailor on the ship who displayed it for GameDay.

Personally, I pass on the snark and say welcome! Still plenty of room on the UC football bandwagon.

Looking at the color-coded map for saturday, anything close to the stage is reserved. actual standing room space is limited. they are allowing 10x10 tents along the perimeter, I suppose to provide the image that it’s being held among tailgaters. sounds like an extremely controlled environment.

Great...a guy who isn't an alumni, didn't live here until he was 27, has more of an affinity for the team we just played, and was only the mayor here for 2 years in the 70's is the guy we get to roll out and represent UC on a national stage...fun...

ESPN is always going to go with a celebrity that is beyond sports if they can. Lachey makes sense. I'm good with it.
At least people know he's a UC fan.

But Nick Lachey? Boring. He is a safe pick, plus he is a sports fan.
