You did make the tourney just 5 seasons ago, right? That's a plus.

I know the football in this conference is first class, but am not terribly familiar with the round ball teams. So I ask the following two questions:
1. What Sun Belt teams could make the most headway in basketball once the new conference takes place? ODU will be strong, and I hope Marshall will be as well. but we need to make this thing a multi-bid league in the next decade. How do we get there?
2. Does the ESPN deal include any basketball games on linear channels? Does ESPN at least have the ability to pick up additional games on linear if they like the matchup?
You are in a 16-team one-bid league, that is tied for fourth for most times in the 16-play in game.
Football conference improved, basketball took a huge step back.

For a long time they played in a conference with Memphis and UAB, and then later just UAB. Basically CUSA post-Memphis was a one bid league, heck even UAB had a dropoff at that time. CUSA didn't have an at large in the following years (I will also put NET rankings for SBC/CUSA next to each year, RPI for everything 2018 and before):
2013 (15/11) last year of Memphis
2014 (19/13)
2015 (19/16)
2016 (17/21)
2017 (13/23)
2018 (20/14)
2019 (17/13)
2020 (no tourney, 14/15)
2021 (18/14)
So for the 8 seasons following Memphis's departure, CUSA had an average NET/RPI rank of about 16. The SBC during that period had an average ranking of around 17. Also notice that in 3 of the 8 seasons, SBC was ranked above CUSA in NET/RPI. Saying they took a huge step back is definitely a reach, especially when you consider they would have been in CUSA that had 6 teams taken by the American. Each conference has held pretty steady in the 13-20 rank since 2014. It's not like they're going from the A-10 to the MEAC.

As for arenas, Cajundome is solid and was updated fairly recently. Similar to what others have stated, probably a bit too big for us these days as it also seats upwards of 10,000.
I'm looking forward to playing you guys in Huntington this year. I'm not sure what to expect from us this year, but our future looks REALLY good.

I said it in another thread, and I'll say it in another way here. If you don't take the stairs, you're gonna be upset later in life when the cardiologist on your elevator tells you "ncaa basketball is a mid major sport."

Everyone in this conference needs to get their RPI under 200. Everyone who already is under 200 needs to get in the top 100. The few that are in top 100 need to work on getting ranked in the top 25.
Easiest way is to never schedule anyone out of conference with a 200+ RPI. Try to do that with the closest schools possible for fan and local media engagement. Also winning as much as possible helps.

RE: Let’s talk basketball
The bottom of the SBC actually isn’t as bad as the bottom of CUSA. If everyone takes a couple steps forward the conference could be alright. Not two bids level probably but if you can get the 12 or 13 seed as opposed to the 14 or 15 then the chances of winning a game goes up exponentially

I am hoping the newcomers can breathe some life into Belt basketball. Yes we need scheduling requirements and the start of it is eliminating non D1 games

We're attempting to lose to Blue Mountain in an exhibition game.
I think they went 3-16 in NAIA last season though they apparently signed a bunch of players from out of nowhere. If we do win its because Norchad Omier is doing Norchad Omier things.

Once we're established in the Sun Belt again and have some wins/championships to back up our talk, I hope that we push something along those lines. Every program's situation is different, but if the conference is serious about changing the MBB perception such steps must be taken

ODU, JMU and GSU is basically a reprise of the old CAA. Which was a great conference at the time. Looking forward to playing you guys again.

AState beats Blue Mountain 72-66. Omier had 22 points and 17 rebounds. We were down our P5 transfer to injury, but this was not pretty.

Eh, these preseason exhibition games don't really mean a lot right now. Teams are still working things out and the results can swing wildly in either direction.
I remember one year ODU had two preseason exhibitions. I looked it up and we won both 102-65 and 95-51 respectively. I thought ODU was going to have a fun high-flying high-win season. We then proceeded to have the worst season in the entire history of our Men's basketball program.
What I'm saying is don't let this get you too down on your team yet.

Oh I'm aware. I also know that we intentionally schedule Blue Mountain off a read that they had brought in a ton of really athletic players who we knew would give us troubles.
But that won't pacify an already restless fan base.

Supposedly this is something the league wants to address once all the Membership changes are fixed. Teams have been given a wide leeway in terms of non D1 scheduling because of Covid financial concerns.
The biggest issue right now is the league needs to improve its collective RPI enough that teams can get enough OOC home games to not need all the Non D1 wins,.

We have a new 8K convocation center coming in 2023 and it would be very nice to get some good OOC competition to play in it
