We used to have "MADISON" across the front of our jerseys and personally I like that but I'm probably in the minority there. It does bug me when ESPN or any other network puts "J. As for our rivals we're being reunited with, they prefer either ODUh, Old Dirty University, Old Dumb University, or "Old, Dumb, and Ugly".

As a 70 year old native Virginian who had many a teacher from Madison College, I probably refer to it as Madison as often as I do JMU. I think that resonates with a lot of us older types.

Yep. My mother attended Madison College.

This one is going to be really hard for me, and when/if I slip up, I'm sorry. I've been a Marshall fan for a long time, and really started following back in the late 80s. Around here ya'll were always referred to as Appy or Appy State. It didn't seem like it was an insult or anything like that, just what you went by. Heck, at church last night some of us were talking about the move the Sun Belt and if I recall correctly every time you were mentioned it was Appy. And trust me, it was used with respect as playing yearly against you is one of the big selling points for most Marshall fans. Point being I know you don't like it, and I personally will try to stop. But if I slip up, I'm sorry, and if others who don't know better use it they may not be trying to be funny, insulting or trolling, it's just what we've always called you and old habits are hard to break. :-)

Yeah I am sure we would be doing mascot changes today if we had kept Southerns and that confederate general that rode a horse around the stadium. Thank God we did that in 1972.

Lol, first response from a Cajun on first page and completely wrong.

Official request from school: Louisiana, Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns, or Ragin' Cajuns

I think most of us would prefer being referred to as simply "Cajuns" rather than ULL.

It doesn't normally bother me, except when used by posters who use it as a subtle jab and definitely know. For instance, chiefsfan using it in a recent post on what scheduling would look like in the years to come with additional SBC members.

Sometimes you need a short version. People call us ODU which is fine, I doubt I’d ever use MU or USM in conversation but use them all the time on message boards especially on my phone. So I’m pretty sure I know what to call you if I want to insult but if I don’t is it safe to say UL is preferable to ULL? Or would you rather La?

Yea, I get that 100%. UL is preferable, but has the highest likelihood of devolving a thread into a name debate. So I personally just use Cajuns for the sake of peace. But I just recently started posting here again, so maybe that was just PTSD from the past.

The minor league baseball league was always referred to as the Appy League. Some folks just look for reasons to be offended.

a. stAte (verbalized as A-state)
b. A-state or Astate
The University also prefers Astate (the official University website is astate.edu.
c. Arkansas State
d. Red Wolves

*Ark St and AR ST are sometimes used by media, but rarely by stAte fans
*ASU is fine but mostly avoided on the SBC board (d/t App)
*I see a lot of Arky St or Arkie St on non-stAte message boards, usually in a derogatory
fashion but it doesn't offend me.

I’ve always used GaSt and GaSo. Not out of disrespect, but I’ve used it enough my predictive text recognizes it. Lol

It's A-State officially. Astate or AState is fine. I prefer stAte.

Red Wolves is two words. Like the species. Not a color of generic wolf.

Like App State we dropped the ASU in 2013. ASU is Arizona State University.

I tend to see non-Arkansas, non-SBC people refer to us as Arky State sometimes. Personally, it sounds like someone saying "Soda-pop" or "You Guys". Just a big signal to me that you're not from god's country (Southern United States).

I saw ASU a lot for A-State because that’s how others here in NE Arkansas refers to them.

Troy is Troy. Very simple. I guess you could abbreviate is TU if 4 letters is too much

AstAte or ASU are what most people that went to school there say…AstAte has become predominant. But like one of the App St posters said ASU has become less common to avoid confusion with App St.

Red Wolves works too…obviously.

And I really don’t mind Arky State either….seems like an affectionate name even when people are trying to flame us. HA!

For several years, App fans referred to the Cajuns as ULLLLLLLL up until last year when those swamp f'ers finally beat App. So now it's ULLLLLLLLww.

My reference card looks like so:
stAte or Astate
CCU or Chants
GS
GSU or GaSt
TxSt or Bobcats
Troy or Trojans
UL or Ragin Cajuns or Cajuns or ULLLLLLLLww
ULM or Warhawks
USA or SoAl or Jags

Hey, this was a nicely written piece. There were a couple of minor typos, a spelling error here and an imprecise word choice there, so as a copy editor I took it upon myself to clean it up in an attempt to avoid ambiguity. Happy to help a fellow Sun Belter!

I like Madison, just as I like Monroe for ULM. I think the monikers of Madison, Marshall, and Monroe looks and sounds like distinguished universities for the conference, if not a top flight DUI law firm.

We don't refer to ourselves as ASU, to be clear. ASU is in Arizona. App is in North Carolina.

What about Appy State? I think I've seen that one as well

In our SoCon days the Blundering Turds beat writer refered to us as Appy as a jab from the beatings they took. UTC and ETSU adopted it as well.

Used to bother me, but then I remembered it originated from someone that was just tired of losing to us.
