CBS has the SEC through 2023. UT and OU owe the Big 12 their rights through 2024.

I can't see UT and OU moving before 2024.

Why would ESPN want CBS to benefit? Why would UT and OU pay more than 1 year TV rights to get out for CBS' benefit?

Well, I think it would benefit the SEC, the actual conference TX and OU are joining, to have them join sooner rather than later, regardless of how the networks feel about it.

And the ESPN Tier 2 could be renegotiated immediately. Also, they probably don't have to give Texas and OU home games to CBS. It all depends on how the contract is worded.

My understanding is that CBS has the "pick of the litter" each week. So if they joined in 2022, then CBS could pick OU or TX home games.

But again, I don't see that as a big deal. First, the SEC has a lot of big names, so it's not like the Big 12 where the featured game of the week is almost always a TX or OU game. In the SEC, maybe once a month, or two or three times a year, they will be.

Second, when it happens so what? From ESPN's POV, if CBS takes TX vs OU as a 2023 game of the week over say Florida vs LSU, that just means ESPN can now show the Florida/LSU game that would have been taken by CBS in the absence of TX and OU. So just not a big deal to anyone, IMO.

When A&M and Missouri joined, there was some discussion as to whether those rights went into the pool with the rest or were separate. Again, depends on the contract language.

I agree. I don't see the air times and TV deals impacting things as much.

Payouts, exit fees, and scheduling conflicts will impact things but I think that will get sorted our relatively quickly. I still say 2023 at the latest.

I think 2023 is the likeliest start date for TX and OU playing football in the SEC. 2022 and 2024 being next and 2021 (LOL) and 2025 both being very unlikely. But 2023 seems to be the sweet spot, IMO.

RE: Kansas State AD Gene Taylor believes conference realignment is done - for now!
Kansas State AD Gene Taylor didn't elaborate about any expansion intention for the B12 in the future. Of course their focus is on the OU/UT exit fees and the media rights revenue that will be coming within the next few years.

If the "8" remain together, I would not be surprised they still don't expand in three years if they can survive financially doing so. They may try to pursue scheduling agreements with the SEC, and perhaps the PAC12, to beef-up their schedules with choice, lucrative OOC games in the future.

If the PAC12 isn't interested in any of them, P4 options are closed.

If no more extractions of the B12 are happening anytime soon, they have much internal work to do beyond waiting on OU/UT depaturing fallout money.

The Pac-12 is probably one that has maybe right now the most challenging (path) because of TV revenue. The ACC has a Grant of Rights that goes through 2035. There's a lot of rumors out there that I don't think people know the difficulty of various situations in each of the conferences. I like very much what Mr. Taylor of Kansas State had to say. It seems like he thoroughly researched the issue, and did due diligence on his part. As for expansion needs, to be perfectly honest, the SEC did not need to expand either, and, quite frankly, I wish we had not. I was very happy with
the additions of Missouri and Texas A&M. Granted, Auburn had some issues with scheduling, which is really why I wanted the SEC to explore the divisionless setup!!!! But, and this is my major issue with E$PN and college sports in general, when E$PN says "jump," just about every college/university president, AD, alumni group, and fan base seems to ask "how high." That kind of order and discipline is for the military, and the respect that we should be showing to our law enforcement, who daily put their lives on the line to keep us safe, but we aren't doing so, which is very shameful on our part, IMHO. That kind of respect should not be going to a tv network. I am a consumer of tv & radio & newspapers. If I like something, I will watch it, listen to it, or read it. If I don't, I won't.

This is ESPN baby and they will not let CBS benefit from this deal (nor will SEC). So, you will not see OU & TX in the SEC until all contacts are moved over to ESPN.

Sounds like the position of an AD that knows (or strongly suspects) that HIS school isn't getting any offers from the PAC or B1G. And of course a school like that wants the gang to "stick together".

But if you are another L8 school and you do get a call ....

This has been my point for a while. The GOR is actually a GOOD thing for ESPN for the next 2 years. If the GOR remains in place, the Texas/OU home games are actually ESPN/FOX properties and are not available to CBS due to being encumbered by preexisting contractual requirements. Its like buying a home where there is a tenant with an existing 2 year lease. Without that protection, CBS will nab the Red River Shootout and any Texas-Bama or OU-Bama games.

RE: Kansas State AD Gene Taylor believes conference realignment is done - for now!
Two questions:

1. How much are OU/UT bringing into the Big 12 at the moment?
2. How much will they be bringing in as part of the E$PN/SEC deal starting in 2024?

You take some average of the two numbers above, and that is roughly your buyout penalty for 2024. Then the GOR ends summer 2025. So it's only one year of dead money for OU/UT.

Big 12 Expansion candidates will have to be announced by Spring 22', so we are not far away from announcements. I think they will announce expansion of at least two additional schools by year end or beginning of next year, just in time for the AAC's 27 month grace period.

It's worth noting these huge upcoming OOC games:

2022 - Alabama @ Texas
2023 - Georgia @ Oklahoma
2024 - Michigan @ Texas
[2025 - Michigan @ Oklahoma]
[2026 - Ohio State @ Texas]

Those are the types of games that ESPN might want to keep away from CBS and FOX, if possible. The Alabama and Georgia games could be absorbed into the SEC schedule and even moved - depending on how the Big 12 exit goes.

I can see a scenerio where a PAC12/BIG12 merger happens and that CBS gets the rights instead of ESPN. And then a bidding war happens between FOX and ESPN..(currently both BIG12 & PAC12N) Can you imagine ESPN not having any West Coast teams to air (FB or MBB)? It could happen..

ESPN owns all of BYU and Gonzaga inventory. If ESPN were to completely lose the PAC12 inventory, the AAC's new marching orders include western expansion.

RE: Kansas State AD Gene Taylor believes conference realignment is done - for now!
The K State AD is basically saying Texas and Oklahoma are not going anywhere until the GOR runs out, and no plans to push them out early. The money in the Big 12 media contract and the GOR is just too much for anyone to do otherwise.

It also makes sense. You can tell your coaches that nothing changes for the incoming Freshmen they will be competing against Texas and Oklahoma for the next four years. The Big 12 has until March 2023 (19½ months) to invite any AAC school without them having to pay extra to buy out given the 27 month notice requirement. Similarly BYU doesn't have to unwind their football schedule until those games starting in 2025. And The Big 12 can hold steady now because there is no rush to bring anyone in before Texas and Oklahoma leave. Plenty of time to work with media consultants to figure things out.

It's boring for realignment fans like us, but that's the way it is.

Muah ha ha, it's NEVER DONE.

Anyone want to take a guess the last season of Division I athletics without a conference membership change?

I'll wait.

RE: Kansas State AD Gene Taylor believes conference realignment is done - for now!

Interesting take, as I don't read anywhere where he mentions OU and TX staying until the GOR runs out, just that the L8 should stay together until then, so as to collect all the fees and moneys that will come from their exit.

IMO, it is better for everyone involved for TX and OU to exit sooner rather than later, with a monetary settlement reached to make that happen.

But who knows?

CBS has the SEC through 2023. UT and OU owe the Big 12 their rights through 2024.

I can't see UT and OU moving before 2024.

Why would ESPN want CBS to benefit? Why would UT and OU pay more than 1 year TV rights to get out for CBS' benefit?
I can see a scenerio where a PAC12/BIG12 merger happens and that CBS gets the rights instead of ESPN. And then a bidding war happens between FOX and ESPN.. Can you imagine ESPN not having any West Coast teams to air (FB or MBB)? It could happen..

ESPN owns all of BYU and Gonzaga inventory. If ESPN were to completely lose the PAC12 inventory, the AAC's new marching orders include western expansion.

False

Sounds like wishful thinking by the Kansas State AD aka Pollyana.

IIRC it's the Kansas State AD, but sure, he's making a pitch: If you believe your school isn't getting a call-up, then it is in your interest to "keep the gang together".

Probably all 8 have conversed, in some fashion, with other power conferences to garner what interest is out there. Kansas having discussion with the BIG, for example, was reported. Of course, that doesn't mean such dialogue is leading to anything substantive currently.
