When Larry became mayor, the city's mood was more funeral like than optimistic. He did sometimes go overboard in his rhetoric that tried to change the city's mood and the beluga whale reference was one of them. He had several good ideas and in his short tenure, a few worked out. We didn't get the Olympics, but we did get the World Games. The city has been on the rebound ever since.
No, Larry had stupid (and, frequently, illegal) ideas. See: cruise ship terminal in Birmingport. And he had nothing to do with getting the World Games. He was rotting in federal prison when that happened. Larry Langford was nothing more than a carnival barker. I mean, the fact he was ever the mayor of Birmingham in the first place was a fraud, considering he never lived in the city.
I recall that there was a fuss over Larry living in Fairfield and only renting an apartment in B'ham. What you might have forgotten is that a Mayor of B'ham built a mansion named Vestavia on the crest of Shades Mountain which later became the name of the city that grew up in that area (B'ham did get the softball fields on Greensprings to remember him by).
Larry had visions for this city that many felt were too farfetched and were ridiculed, but look at what has been built since he left. We have a small Protective Stadium (instead of a major league MPF) and a smaller capacity(after renovation) Legacy Arena. We are now a "G League" city in every sport played here. There is even talk of Huntsville becoming the largest city in Alabama -- facilitated by state level support for industrial growth denied for over a century to B'ham. It is not happenstance that Montgomery has three state universities, Huntsville has two and B'ham has one (and the state placed its second School of Pharmacy at USA to match the other one at Auburn).
birmingham has always been a minor league town and will continue to be minor league. its too small a market for major professional sports.
The market size isn't the issue as much as it's the costs and logistics to even be considered.

A trademark search shows nothing being registered as of yet. However that same search shows that The Spring League, LLC (aka USFL) has now trademarked Birmingham Stallions.

The "tie" to the community statement seems a bit of a stretch.
Quote:Squadron is used to describe a group of pelicans, while the word also has longstanding use in military aviation.
“From the 99th Pursuit Squadron -- the first all-Black flying squadron in the Air Force -- to the city of Birmingham’s production of planes during WWII, the state of Alabama has played a significant role in our nation’s military history, and we felt it was important to highlight that in the Birmingham Squadron brand,” David Lane, the team’s general manager of business operations, said in a statement.

It would make more sense if the team is playing in Montgomery than Birmingham.
Still going to the games btw

I like the name. For those that don't like the name please list the name(s) you suggested for the team.
Thanks!

I suggested Yellowhammers. State bird (like Pelicans for Louisiana), same color scheme, could call them the Birminghammers for short lol
But I like the name.

I suggested Birmingham Smoke. Either for Sloss Furnace smoke stacks or smoking bbq. I don't mind the name Squadron, but it doesn't really roll off the tongue to me. Seems a bit long of a name since Birmingham is also a pretty long name.

I actually like Smoke. That's a good name.

Well, if Snoop Dogg ever owns a franchise, I think we have the nickname winner.

Because of the nature of the name and that it seems to have come out of nowhere, leads me to suspect that the name was decided upon "in house" before the "contest" was even launched - more as a publicity ploy to garner a show of public support. Now if a local fan is rewarded as the first to suggest the winning name with free concessions for one or two for some games, it might suggest lrgitimacy .

It doesn't really matter. How many people can name the city and nickname of any other G-League team?

There is no winner that was announced out of this contest

I wonder when we'll start learning about the roster. I hope this team is successful.
Kinda cool to see Birmingham having multiple pro teams even if they are minor leagues. Wish the Bulls could come back to the BJCC. And bring on the XFL.
