The link returns a 404 error.

I'd go with a bird common in the area to keep with the Pelicans theme.

The most common backyard birds throughout the year in the state of Alabama are these:

Northern Cardinal (61% frequency)
Mourning Dove (49%)
Northern Mockingbird (47%)
Carolina Wren (46%)
Blue Jay (44%)
Red-bellied Woodpecker (38%)
Tufted Titmouse (37%)
Carolina Chickadee (37%)
American Crow (34%)
Eastern Bluebird (29%)
Eastern Towhee (26%)
House Finch (25%)
Downy Woodpecker (25%)
American Robin (23%)
Brown Thrasher (21%)

Why wouldn't they go with the State Bird?

Due to Harper Lee's book, the Mockingbird may be considered a "state bird". During the Civil War, Alabama soldiers were said to decorate their caps with Yellowhammer feathers which led to that specie of woodpecker being named the official state bird.

The New Orleans Pelicans was the name of their Southern League AA baseball team so we might consider the Barons as well.

The NO Pelicans baseball team disappeared long before the NBA team assumed the name. Last I checked, the Barons were still using the name and B'ham sportscasters have enough trouble keeping things straight without the added confusion of two minor league teams using the same name in the city.

After all, B'ham is the home of the Thrasher Brothers pop/gospel singing group and their bus company.
If Montgomery can have its Biscuits, B'hm can have its Sandwiches.
A well known and largest member of the vulture family is the Condor though they are mainly on the Pacific coast.
I would consider The Vulcans a possible choice/
