You realize this news only reconfirmed to the huskers that they did the right thing. Trust me nebby has never been more happy with the move than this exact moment in time

Yes, you can almost hear the chortling in Lincoln from here.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess being in a very stable conference based based around osu, Penn state, and michigan is preferable to the new big 12 (If rumors are true). That's kinda, ya know, common sense. Nebraska, colorado, Aggie and mizzou made decisions a decade ago. Some choices are tough but were they right, duh

We heard this last time the PAC 16 called. Baylor threw a hissy fit. There was not much they could have done about it either way. UT does what UT does. I don’t see the other schools putting up significant resistance. Hell, Ted Cruz can get involved for that matter. Won’t make a difference.

Well, the last time the PAC called, Texas ended up staying in the Big 12.

I expect Baylor, TCU and Texas Tech to pull out every stop they have economically and politically to try and stop this. I don't think they will succeed, but they could.

From their POV, there is no "going quietly in to the night". As the Iowa State AD said five years ago, without Texas and OU the Big 12 is the Mountain West with cornfields (or something). There entire identities as big time athletic programs is at stake and they will fight tooth and nail.

I agree with you. Let's say that happens, why would Texas still want to be affiliated with them? They are basically being forced to play awful branded/ awful educational schools. And are seen as money trains for these schools.

A big nothingburger, but what else could they say?

So they will defend the GOR agreement, which expires in four years, in court. Big whoopee.

The only thing it shows me is that the remaining wants the money from breaking the GoR...the 3rd Bullet point told the story of the meeting

Well how far they go might impact whether Texas schedules them again. The Horns do have that history.

And who has more legislative pull, UT and their donors, or anyone else?

And why piss off ESPN? They may need help getting into another conference or....in scheduling.

GOR? Define damages if OU and UT remain until 2025? Case closed.

That should be $75-80 million in addition to any buyout of the remaining 4 years.

Texas would not want to be affiliated with them. But they might not have a choice, if there is a political battle and they lose.

I don't think that would happen, but that would be IMO the logical outcome. Ultimately, Texas is an organ of the State, and if the State decides that Texas must be a (very well paid) money train for the likes of Baylor and Texas Tech, than that's how it would be. Same thing with OU vis-a-vis Oklahoma State in that state.

Though again, not what I expect.

If OU abandons OSU, OU will be required by the State of Oklahoma to play them which will not be an issue with Texas in the same SEC division. Baylor and Texas is bad politics. I say Texas pays cash and drops them.

Here is my guess, Texas and OU negotiate to exit the B12 two years early and pay the remaining B12 members a quarter of a billion dollars - $100 M up front and $10 million a year for 15 years. That $12.5 million per school and child support of nearly $2 million a year until the kids reach 21.

Does this free Kansas, Iowa State, or TCU to move without penalty?

If it did, would it matter? Kansas has only won 5 conference games in the last 10 years. Unless you are a conference that doesn't care that you suck at the money sport, why would you want them? I don't see conferences lining up in hopes of landing ISU or TCU either.

Kansas is not going to make money additional money but they do dominate the Kansas City media market in basketball. The Big 10 could add them and while not making any additional money, they could give Nebraska, Illinois, and Iowa some added interest - maybe. Illinois football being dead sort of opens a hole but I am not thinking about adding money just cannon fodder for the B10.

OU will not be required by the State of Oklahoma to play OSU. There is more to Bedlam than football and OU will gladly continue playing OSU every year in every sport. Contrary to what many people think, OU and OSU Administrators have always worked together.

Interesting quotes from the article… especially the last sentence.

“During Thursday's meeting, conference officials also scratched the surface on discussions of what the Big 12 might do if OU and Texas left, and one source said that included looking into whether there were other Power 5 programs that might want to join, or if schools such as UCF, Houston, Cincinnati or BYU might make good additions. There was some appetite in the meeting for possibly adding two teams even if OU and Texas decide to stay.”

Define "required". I know how it's defined in NC, SC, and Va. Threats are usually good enough.

The conference will implode before the GOR can get to court. All it takes is 4 schools I believe. Rumors that TCU and the PAC have been talking already.. including with Tech, Baylor and OSU. This thing will blow up.. In fact I'm thinking Texas and ou will both be playing in the SEC in the '22 season

Everyone is talking. For the left behinds---they werent considered viable P5 additions in 2011 and I'd be surprised if they are now. My belief is P5 conferences have hit the point of diminishing returns. It takes a school with tremendous value to make it financially viable for a 12-14 team conference to add another member.

Texas and Oklahoma are the kind of schools that carry that level of value. I'd be surprised if anyone else in the Big12 has enough value to make a P5 expand. Im talking about having around 50 million IN JUST MEDIA VALUE. Not a knock on the left behind B12 schools---its just that P5 payouts have reached the point where only kingpins are clearly worth expanding for. The reason is CFP and NCAA credit money---which now account for a substantial portion of conference revenue---do not automatically expand when you add new members. Thats no doubt why, even with the pro rata clause written into the B12 contract---the Big12 ultimately didnt see expansion as economically viable with the targets available.

You are arguing from a false premise that the Big Ten is going to be raiding the PAC ... there's no two team raid that works, and there's nor raid of more than two teams in the offing until after there is an allowance for conference semi-final games ...

... which the 12 team CFP proposal puts on the back burner.

So the Big Ten is not doing a snap raid of the PAC-12. The conditions are not right for the kind of "bang" "bang" "bang" power conference realignment of the last power conference realignment.

Under status quo conditions, the Big Ten is going to wait on the GOR of the ACC coming to it's end and it may well be that NIL / pay to play demolishes the current status quo well before that actually happens.

These other factors plus the value of Basketball being greater for the conference networks than for the main media deal are why Kansas would have worked as a tagalong, but given that, as JRsec has pointed out, the SEC has likely already voted to accept Texas and Oklahoma, there is nobody in the Big12 for Kansas to tagalong with.

There is more value for the Big 12 left overs through sticking together than wooing the Pac12. Look at the disaster that is WVU. It didn’t do them any good traveling 1000’s of miles every week chasing the Big 12 dream. Plus who’s to say USC doesn’t bolt at some point?

I mean if the Pac12 makes a ridiculous offer to TCU and OSU then fine, but it will probably be at half revenue for many years ahead.

I’m curious, if over the course of that meeting, they came to a consensus as to their order of preference for potential replacements.

IMHO there a 6 very competitive options for just 2-4 spots

Technically there's nothing stopping the Big 12 from adding 6 or even 8 teams and putting the AAC out of business (or just starting a bigger chain reaction and the Sun Belt or CUSA is out of business).
