Here’s an article from Harry Minium on the two finished buildings as well as the upcoming Health Sciences building. In the article, he notes that they are preserving a lot between the Health Sciences building and Hampton Boulevard to be privately developed.

WOW...I am just amazed at the progress ODU has made. Anyone else remember the dark halls and high school lockers in the business building (can't remember what it was called). the whole campus used to look neglected and old. Now it looks amazing. I wish they would preserve some green space for students to hang out and stuff, but I guess that is what happens when you are an urbanesque school bound by water and neighborhoods on all sides. On a different note, I was always curious why they have not bought Larchmont School and WHRO and move WHRO onto campus in some fashion it would allow the campus some real expansion opportunities.

Larchmont just underwent a major renovation and looks great. That school is also one of the biggest selling points for real estate in Larchmont/Edgewater. Norfolk is not killing that golden goose of property taxes.

It’s talked about in the article.
Thats referring to the School of Public Health venture with EVMS and NSU, unless I missed something. I was referring to the potential merger of EVMS/ODU.

WHRO should move downtown, letting ODU get that property along with the field behind it. Make that happen, and then start branding the whole area, especially along Hampton Blvd, ODU-centric. I love the flags in the median. Maybe add a big lion with a crown statue on the corners of the north and south sides of campus. Even better landscaping and signage etc. If we got a pedestrian bridge, it would be a great opportunity too. Lastly, if we got the North Colley area to really embrace being part of the campus community, putting pennants, flags, photos, jerseys etc throughout the businesses, maybe something cool like paint the sidewalks blue or something, it would be very cool. If the EVMS merger takes place, maybe even change the name of Hampton Blvd (from the Hospital to Little Creek) to something like University Blvd.

The field behind WHRO is property of Norfolk. That’s used for recess and parks and recreation. It’s not being sold. As for WHRO, what incentive would they have to sell their property to buy or lease a more expensive one downtown?

That parking lot is also pretty flood prone. To be honest, if ODU were to expand its land area the most likely place is between Colley and Killam, and *maybe* between 38th and 35th depending on potential real estate openings. And even then, the school probably isn't really looking to expand too much seeing how they haven't yet filled up what the have right now. Don't forget that ODU owns everything within the Hampton Blvd, Killiam, 38th, and 41st minus the Radio store, the plastics place, and The Next. Powhatan, Whitehurst, Gresham, and Rogers are all still aging and mostly not very gracefully, so I could see those being replaced in the near future too.

The music is hilarious. Gets me SO HYPED FOR CHEMISTRY LET'S F&CKING GOOOO OMG IM RUNNING THRU BRICK WALLS YAAAAAAA
Also the led molecular structure lights are a cool touch.
I took a walk around campus about a month ago and was very impressed with the new chemistry building. I thought it looked kinda eh in the renderings but in person it's a very nice building. You can see the molecular lights from the street and it really adds a nice bit of style to the place. I hope it stays cool cause I could see something like that seeming kinda dorky in like 20 years. But it's also a chemistry building so lean into the dorky?

Since it's "public" television, seems using the station as a catalyst for redevelopment on public land or buildings would be good. Then ODU could further develop the WHRO lot which would also be good. The city of Norfolk could provide land near PETA, or in MacArthur Center, Military Circle etc. Helps a new area, helps WHRO, helps ODU... Or ODU could build a nice new 6 story building or something on the lot, and give WHRO the first floor to use. Just seems like too strategic of a property to have that one use.

Ignoring all the financial catalysts that would require and it would require a lot. As BlueTrombone pointed out, we have lots that are undeveloped already, others that are primed for demo and a long slate of properties we could purchase for much cheaper that would have a bigger positive impact on the school.
The best opportunities for ODU to both make a better, safer and more cohesive campus are expansion towards Highland Park and Lamberts Point. Expanding with WHRO offers very little in return at a much higher cost.

The one area that makes sense to expand into Larchmont is near the football stadium on Bluestone and along 49th. This would allow us more room for future expansion of the stadium, more lots and other associated development. They’ve already started purchasing these properties as they hit the market and I expect to see that continue.

We cannot encroach into Lamberts Point beyond 42nd street (I think) we made some sort of agreement with the Lamberts Point Community Association that the university would not expand in that direction due to the historic nature of the neighborhood. If I recall in the original proposal to the university the consultants recommended that the University acquire the land on both sides of Hampton Blvd all the way down to 38th Street. And from Killiam to Powhattan Ave if possible.

That's all Lamberts Point. In fact, a not insignificant portion of ODU's current campus sits on what was formerly Lamberts Point neighborhood.
When I was talking about 38th I was talking about the East side, probably sandwiched between Hampton and Killam, since the leads into the industrial area that I think would be easier for the University to acquire should they want to expand even further.
The new chemistry building (picture in above post) doesn't seem to fit in with other campus buildings. Different color brick, drastically different. I'm not sure where on campus this building is, haven't been on campus in a while, but I drive down Hampton Blvd regularly and this building doesn't fit into the "look" of campus.
