Clearly, you've not actually followed this story at all. Any extortion attempt was done well after the Bill Barr DOJ started investigating the congressman and has nothing at all to do with what is being reported as to why he's being investigated.
And the guy doing the "extortion" is actually claiming he wasn't extorting money but telling Gaetz to have his dad pony up some money to try and get a hostage released from a foreign country to get Matt some good press. How many people have come to Gaetz' defense? Jim Jordan, Marjorie Taylor Greene, but that may be it? He did that one early (disastrous) appearance on Tucker Carlson, but has he even done any TV since then?
I'd say the deafening silence that Republicans are showing Gaetz is pretty telling. He's the Republican version of any member of the Squad and most Republicans are more than happy to abandon him. Lauren Boebert and Marjorie Taylor Greene are probably thankful the attention is off them for the moment.
My guess is he'll be gone from DC by the summer at the latest. Good riddance.

Because he is effective? Make no mistake about it, Noem, Desantis and any other republicans that appear to be stars will be drug through the mud, factual or not, for the next 2-4 years. The MSM and ‘sources’ will do anything to make sure no republicans get the favorable treatment afforded Hunter Biden.
If he did these things he should be held accountable. Unlike democrats who circle the wagons for rapist and child molesters, the republicans tend to hold their support until more facts are known. We shall see, but if this is all a bunch of smoke, people like Tommy Psaki have done their damage and won’t mind letting stay out there as fact.

“I never threatened the man — matter of fact, it was the opposite: I told him if he decides not to help us, he’ll never hear from me again,” Kent said, adding, “I can’t help how it sounds.”
Documents obtained by the Washington Examiner, however, showed how Kent allegedly texted Don Gaetz saying he had a plan that could make his son’s “future legal and political problems go away.”
Kent also gave Don a document called “Project Homecoming” that detailed the alleged federal probe against Matt Gaetz and claimed the FBI had photos of the lawmaker in a “sexual orgy with underage prostitutes.”
“Our strategy for Congressman Gaetz to mitigate his legal, and political, troubles would be for him, or someone else, to arrange for the funds required to obtain the immediate release of Robert Levinson from captivity in Iran,” the document stated.
Kent said the document was put together by Stephen Alford, a Florida developer who has previously been accused of fraud.
Transfer of the funds, Kent said, would have been all “aboveboard,” with the cash being funneled through David McGee, a former federal prosecutor who has served as the Levinson family’s attorney.
Don Gaetz contacted the FBI about the proposal and the agency is investigating whether it constitutes an extortion attempt against the Gaetz clan, the Washington Post reported last week.
Kent said he has been interviewed by the FBI and is cooperating.
It’s unclear how Kent and his cohorts knew that Matt Gaetz, 38, was under investigation by the Department of Justice.
