RE: 2021 MBB Recruiting
It certainly seems that Byington is fully committed to his philosophy of 4 guards and 1 big. Seems like he's got the bigs in Amadi, Mensah and Wooden and will only add wings and combo guards to the mix, based on the players they're looking at. If it were me, I'd add another big, since Mensah basically missed the entire season and big guys with foot issues can be an ongoing problem.

RE: 2021 MBB Recruiting
I think Coach By values wingspan as well so a guy like Edwards or the other incoming freshman Savage who is 6’ 6” with a bigger wing span are potential bigs or 4s in his system.

RE: 2021 MBB Recruiting
I feel like the flaw with Coach By's wingspan theory is that it assumes 6'9"-6'10" guys don't also have long arms for their height. Our current makeup, wingspans included, probably does play taller than our team from a few years ago though ( with all the Euro/ World imports.)

RE: 2021 MBB Recruiting
Finding a quality big to play in the CAA is tough. They are going to go P5 first then the second tier conferences next. Byington understands the player pool gets much larger with 6’ 5” players and below. Players want playing time. No school is going to find 13 quality players so he can afford to take a risk on a player or two. If they don’t pan out, it isn’t a problem.

Very good article.

We just offered one of the players mentioned in that article

Chico Carter 6’2 guard SOPH transfer from Columbia, SC via Murray State

Chico shot 51% overall and 44% from 3 and hit 81% of his FTs. The problem is he didn't fill up any thing else; only 1.7 REB and 1.9 AST to go with his 12.7 PPG. Maybe it was a symptom of Murray State's playing style?

Fine by me if the other 4 are making up for it. Having a guy who can score at a high shooting percentage puts more stress on the other team --- just one way to look at it. Especially with Matt graduating

May be a higher percentage Vado but would have to see his game to know for sure. Would have 2 maybe 3 years of eligibility left as well.

I trust the staff and their process - they are very diligent about vetting guys games and how they fit within the system. One other thought around speed- would think with a full and normal off season of conditioning and no start and stops that our game speed and pace will only get better. JMU will dictate tempo even more next year.

With those glasses, he reminds me of Mike Strayhorn (William & Mary) from the early 80s.

Yeah file this one in the out of our control missed opportunity folder. Plenty of good guys to bring into the program though. It will be interesting to see his final 5 just to put into perspective how highly JMU and our staff was thought of.

RE: 2021 MBB Recruiting
Holden was a JUCO before playing at UT Martin last season. Count it as a blessing that it didn't work out with JMU. Rashawn Fredericks was pretty highly regarded and a former JUCO and never ended up playing last season because of a combination of academic and injury issues. There are plenty of good players out there to fit JMU's system and Byington is looking for 3.

Supposedly on Fredericks the grad school during COVID was something he had a tough time adjusting to. If you aren’t completely bought in as a student (it’s just a means for added hoops eligibility) I could see that not working out.

Mettlen mentioned that JMU is one of 5 finalists for VMI transfer, along with VCU.

Parham? He ended up at South Alabama.

Or was it the other VMI guy?
