RE: Monty FIRED
Since everyone else is going bonkers with suggestions, I'll toss one in ... Anthony Beane Sr. Already on staff, knows the players, may be willing to work for what NIU can pay. He was an assistant for some pretty decent programs at SIUc, SEMO, Illinois State (twice) and St. Louis. According to his bio, Beane was the 1992 Big Eight Conference Newcomer of the Year and twice All-Big Eight while playing for Kansas State (his coach there was current Oregon HC Dana Altman). He joined the staff in 2019 and though he worked within Montgomery's system, don't diss him for that. He's been around enough to know there are other ways to get it done. Knows Illinois, the Upper Midwest, credited with getting some good recruits into those other programs.
Fortunately, none of us has to make the hire ... and take the credit and/or blame for whatever happens.

Best of luck to Monty. Seems like a decent guy but he had ample opportunity to make it happen here, time for someone new.

If it was me, and you should all be thankful it isn’t, I would want a complete and total change to this program. I would not consider anyone on the current staff. I just think it is time to go in a completely different direction. Probably unfair to those on staff, but, I think it needs to be done.

Beane, Sr. has been talked about.
As far as recruiting strenghts, I'm not sure exactly but I'd bet, with his resume, it's pretty strong in central and southern Illinois, along with the St. Louis area (along with the Metro East), and the Paducah (and surroundings) area.
His recruiting profile isn't exactly Chicago, which I know a lot of people here prefer. I know a lot of coaches struggle with CPS recruiting relationships, but with that said...I have no idea who he may know in the network (if he knows anyone at all...).
I think he's probably a good coach, but he seems more like the, "we'll take him" kinda guy as opposed to the "we want him" kind of guy.
He does have a long resume in D-1 basketball so recruiting and running a D-1 program shouldn't be hard for him.
I think they could do a lot worse than Beane, Sr.

As far as guys currently on staff, Beane, Sr. is about as "different" as it would get and he's already in house. He's only in his 2nd season and has worked under a lot of other coaches at a number of different schools.
I'd highly doubt, Beane, Sr. would just be a continuation of Montgomery. He didn't learn under Montgomery and hasn't been with him long enough to fall in love with Monty's style.
With that said, I never disliked Montgomery the coach. His failing, imo, was in recruiting.
I mean, Montgomery learned under Tom Izzo. He had a similar style as Izzo, but the talent wasn't there to fulfill it.
I like tough, defensive minded teams. Montgomery just couldn't get scorers in the pipeline. It was always here or there but nothing consistent.
Anyway, I'm not stumping for Beane, Sr. but to think they need to have a clean break from Monty is 1) I believe...not warranted as he wasn't toxic but more so 2) wouldn't include Beane Sr. as he's not really from the Montgomery "tree" anyway (he's also not from Michigan, which is pretty popular with Monty guys and players).

As can be found in archival posts, this should have happened after Monty's third year. This move is only seven years overdue.

You guys are delusional if you think anyone with time at a high major or mid major background is coming here. We're one of the worst programs in d1 with no recent basketball success.
Start looking at assistants or out of the box guys but please give me some who is focused on offense.

What exactly does past success or failures have to do with a new coaches ability to recruit and win?

Well the current roster and the time it takes to turn it over are the most obvious ones. These people thinking were getting some name you've heard of are not looking at the job itself and what we are willing to pay.

I know. I posted his name on an older thread about Montgomery needing to go, and a few did discuss it. But that was for a temp fill-in with early dismissal of MM (I forgot about Chapman being associate HC).
BUT !!! -- throwing a wrench in -- the old cliche "always a bridesmaid, never a bride" comes to mind. Beane has been an assistant and a decent recruiter at a bunch of mid-level majors, according to what their websites had to say about him. When they changed head coaches, he changed jobs (came from SIUc when they did). There was also some speculation (via sports media) about whether he would/did apply for some of those.
Question ... why 20 years as an assistant? He was a strong assistant at several Missouri Valley schools. I'm NOT going to speculate about character or personal background. Nor about some other schools' reasons. I don't have the connections to get those answers, and don't have the responsibility (thankfully). I was just looking at his resume, and he checked a lot of boxes.
Imo, NIU could do worse, but can it do better, and can it afford better? And what is "better" anyway?
We now await the powers-that-be who will make that decision. For now, enough speculation and analysis for me.

I feel basically the same way about him.
Until today, I hadn't realized he had so much D1 experience and I had some of those same questions pop up in my head as you just voiced.
Doesn't seem like an up-and-comer does he?
Although, I don't think he's that old. Probably under 50 if my math is correct, but right around it.
One other thing (this was added after I posted), I wonder how much him coming to NIU had to do with Darius (or vice-versa?).

Good ?? There was a thread that briefly opined on that when he first came in 2019, but I can't see hiring an assistant for just one player.
Since we're still speculating (yeah, I know, said I wouldn't) -- and all questions are valid since we don't know -- I wonder why Sr. was brought to NIU when all his experience is downstate and in Mo. I had a really, really off-the-wall thought when I first mentioned Beane a few threads ago that for Montgomery, it was you-know-what or get off the pot, with an in-house guy qualified enough to take over if not.
Otherwise, as you say, why hire Beane? They could have left the position vacant and saved some $$. Coulda hired some talented high school coach for a lot less. Then there was Montgomery only taking a 2% Covid-related pay cut and not a hint of an extension, even when the team did well in 2019-20.
Well, we can beat this into the ground. Again, fun to speculate but we aren't making the call.
(Sorry. i don't know how to break posts, but that one was getting onerous.)

It was.
And yeah...the Beane thing always seemed odd. Either way, announcing Beane, Sr. as the next head coach won't be an exciting announcement and it won't make me sad either, but my expectations for his success would be quite tempered.
He could be a placeholder...keeping the ship afloat until better days ahead. But that seems either way more forward thinking than Frazier has demonstrated or the dumbest idea ever.
Either way...yeah...we ain't making this call and anything we come up with I'm sure has already crossed the desk (mind?) of Frazier and...warts and all...he has way more resources to identify potential candidates than we could ever cobble together with our Google machines.
But, it's fun to talk about. Unfortunately there won't be much to talk about for (at least) a few months.
Most likely.

Best wishes to Monty; it definitely was time.
Count me in the camp that wants a proven head coach. Hire a high school coach for all I care. Take a risk. Think high ceiling.

Another local guy is Jon Scheyer who played HS ball at Glenbrook North.
Jon Scheyer is AHC at Duke and I highly suspect already well beyond what we will be paying. He will go directly to a high-major job, similar to what Wojo did at Marquette. Wojo makes $1.775M at Marquette. That isn’t our ballpark.
I think he may as well, but I don't know. He's been there for something like 6 seasons so, I have no idea. I was just looking at guys with local ties who were top assistants.
He could also very well be in line to take over DePaul if Leito gets canned. Obviously DePaul could offer gobs more than NIU could. But who knows. If Burno goes there then that closes that one up for a while.
Yeah, he could just stick it out at Duke waiting for K to retire but that could be a long time down the road and he may not want to wait that long.
But I do agree, with NIU offering less than what Horizon League coaches get paid really trims the list of possible coaches down a lot.
Jon Scheyer is Jewish. I don't see him going to DePaul.
That would be a big get, but I’m pretty sure Scheyer is being groomed to be next up for when Coach K retires. They like to keep things in the family there.

RE: Monty FIRED
Chin Coleman at Illinois is an interesting option. Major ties to the Chicago area. Chin wants to be a Head Coach and would prefer to stay in-state where he can work his connections. However he also has tremendous job security at Illinois, less pressure, and makes 315k per year, which isn't much less than Monty made. Illinois would surely offer him a raise to stick around too, as he is very valuable to them - He's the reason Ayo and Adam Miller are on the roster.
You have to place a phone call to Tim Miles. Great X's and O's guy, known on the national scene, and great personality - would bring overnight energy to the program. He can afford to be choosy and would probably say no, but you have to make the call.
Roger Powell is known as a top assistant coach in the game. From the area (Joliet) Currently at Gonzaga after putting in time at both Valpo and Vanderbilt. Another guy with a great job who can afford to be picky, but interest should be gauged.
Coach Chapman will probably get a hard look to stick around. I believe this is a legitimate tryout for him. He's spent a lot of years as an assistant and comes from the Steve Pikiell coaching tree. Pikiell is one of the best around.
