RE: ODU Will Not Play Athletics This Fall, Postpones Fall Sports
Even Harry seems to be a bit touchy. I’m guessing the admin must be catching a lot of flack about this now that CUSA football has started and we are the only FBS team in Va or NC not playing. I just feel sad for our program right now. Rhane coming, the ACC home games and the recruiting had me feeling better, but this just took the wind right out of the sails.

Minor league soccer is playing with a thousand. Youth soccer tournaments are being held with hundreds of teams and their families. All in the 757. Are they all breaking the law?

I seriously can't remember what the rules were when we made the call, but if anything, aren't we under stricter rules now, since the Governor put additional restrictions on Hampton Roads?

You are correct. Events are still limited to 50 people or less.

This actually gets into a good point about arbitrary rules. Is it all events limited to 50 or just indoor events? If all, what constitutes an “event?” If there is a soccer tournament with 10 fields, spread over 20 acres, does the rule of 50 still make sense? If I’m playing volleyball in a rec center gym with two courts, should that max number be different than if my building was big enough for 10 courts? Should WalMart capacity be limited to 50?
The rules are totally arbitrary and really difficult to enforce. Also, I’d love to see the data that says 49 is ok, but 50 is dangerous.
Clearly, we could be playing right now, To be honest, I don’t miss our sports as much as I thought I would (that probably changes if it’s still this way during hoops season), but I’m totally bummed for our student-athletes.

Additional restrictions were put in place July 28 for Hampton Roads.
They remain in place but are now expected to be relaxed after Labor Day numbers come out.
ODU cancelled football August 10
I don't know where the previous poster saw the soccer tourney, but per pilot article above
Quote:The restrictions apply specifically to Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Suffolk, Portsmouth, Hampton, Williamsburg, Newport News, Poquoson, James City County, and York County.
so if in those cities, yes they are in violation. I saw Recruit757 has specifically moved it's football camps from Wburg to Richmond to get out from underneath the order, so at least some sports organizers are aware of restrictions.

Just go into any walmart or target and there are well more than 50 customers in the store not even counting the employees. So 50 people in an enclosed store is OK but having more than 50 in an open air stadium is against the rules. Shows how arbitrary the numbers and restrictions are and how little they are actually enforced.

This is true. But you have to start somewhere. If they say 75, people afe gonna ask the difference between 75 and 76. And the rules are clearly tough to be enforced and relies on people to have some personal responsibility, which seems to be an issue.
If there are soccer tourneys with over 50 people congregating together, they are playing with fire:”; rightly or wrongly.

There are thousands at this soccer tournament. Either the “rules” are only guidelines or everyone except ODU got off their arses and worked with the health department and/or the political hacks and got something done while ODU made excuses.

Soccer tournament is in Williamsburg. They had one last month as well. Beach FC had one 2 weeks ago. Our minor league team already finished its season and they play in Yorktown. They allowed 1,000 capacity in a 4,000 seat stadium. You’ve been lied to.

Ever, You also have to look at this objectively. If what you stated about the minor league is true and this Northam guy is after 757 to lash his whip why would ODU, a state funded institution takes the same risk as a minor league who can go play somewhere else even if fined. I doubt they suffer the same wrath as ODU does if they ever come under fire. Also the financial angle is being ignored here by a lot of us. What makes anyone think we can afford those tests for players with less tickets to sell and all that travelling we have to do with the added precautions with a G5 budget. Even if it sucks for all of us this season i think Pres Broderick made the right call for ODU. JMHO.

On a side note. How is it the two recent Governors from Hampton Roads... McDonnell and Northam, both did more to screw over their "hometowns" than any others since the 70s? Between selling of the tunnels and new tolls, to not backing the ODU/EVMS merger, to specific restrictions just for this region of Virginia and nowhere else... I'm starting to think it hurts, rather than helps, to have a governor from HR.

Northam did the same thing for NOVA earlier in the pandemic.

And the latter is blatant racist and laughing stock, which isn't a great look for the region either.

JMHO.

BTW, they were strict about the COVID rules. Also some rules for the youth soccer tournament that seemed pointless, but happy they got to play nonetheless. The fans were set back behind a fence, which I actually liked because you could see the whole field no matter what. Usually I have to stand behind the parents in their camping chairs and pace the sidelines to see the whole field or the people next to me and the ref walking the sidelines would obstruct. Wouldn’t mind if that restriction stayed... made it more enjoyable as a spectator. Players had to wear masks when they walked to and from the fields and coaches had to wear masks when coaching, which made it appear like a bit of a pointless dog an pony show... but they played so we were fine compromising. Parents had to wear masks when unable to distance. I never had to put one on. Some parents wore them the whole time regardless of distancing. Again, just seemed like a dog and pony show. But the Baghdad Bob fake news that more than 50 fans is impossible is BS. If they wanted to play they could work something out like everyone else is doing.

RE: ODU Will Not Play Athletics This Fall, Postpones Fall Sports
I think the 50 is bull for the whole stadium. I'm sure they could have done 50 per entry point or 50 per restroom clusters onsite. 50 in the north, 50 in the south, 50 lower, 50 higher level on both sides.
Churches, fishing pier, youth baseball, and soccer fields didn't abide.
