RE: NIU Enrollment Looking Up?
As a proud parent of two current NIU students and one recent graduate it is really nice to hear some positive enrollment news, however tentative as it might be. I posted a while back that I wonder if all the recent craziness has people a little more uneasy sending their kids far from home and they are more open to the more “local” NIU option.

Over the next few years, a college-town-NIU may also be more preferable to some Illinois parents than a UIC/Loyola-type setting.

RE: NIU Enrollment Looking Up?
A 30% increase in applications prior to COVID? I wonder what that's about. Regardless, an increasing enrollment is good news. Hopefully NIU can improve on-campus housing and DeKalb can start turning around.
The Facebook data center was the best news in a long time.
No football this year hurts. I planned on hitting at least two home games, maybe 3. I'm donating the not-spent travel money to the HAF.

NIU hired out a private company last October to blast free applications to thousands of high school seniors across the Midwest which accounted for the large spike in applications. No idea how many of those targeted applications ended up enrolling though.
A professor from Bradley told me that its very likely that public universities will see an increase in enrollment while private schools decrease the most since there's no benefit to paying extra tuition for online classes, which may help us out a lot.

That is very admirable of you MiamiHuskie. I am sure the school can use every cent of it.

I'm fortunate at this stage of my life to have the times and means to travel, and getting to CHicago in the fall is pretty reasonable. I stay with family to cut costs. If we're going to lose the 20' season, might as well try to give back to the school.
I had season tickets which I let roll over until next year. I hope NIU football comes out of this okay, but I am worried.

This is good news. Let's build off of this initial momentum and build a stronger university and community as we work our way through the pandemic. I like the leadership and direction right now!

Miami Huskie, not sure if you've seen all the recent housing improvements but NIU's housing is very good. I took my daughter on a campus tour a few years ago and NIU had the best housing of any school we looked at. This was in comparison to schools such as VA Tech, WVU, Old Dominion, etc.

RE: NIU Enrollment Looking Up?
I think that president Freeman has done and continues to do a fantastic job in leading NIU. Some of this increase could be due to anomalies related to Covid but some of it is also due to her emphasis on institutional pride and her sound decision making and successful attempts to promote NIU. I hope that she leads our school for many years to come.

Good to hear. My info is probably a little old.
My daughter attends UCF in Orlando and everything on campus is probably less than 20 years old. The advantages of being a new school, I guess.
I still have family back there and the general perception is that DeKalb has a crime problem. Is that indeed true?

She seems to be an effective leader. She inherited a mess from Baker, who left under a cloud, but a $600K settlement. Incredible.
Let's hope she can turn things around and get NIU's enrollment back up and keep moving things forward.

We've some unfortunate publicized crimes as of late, but in general Dekalb is a fairly safe college town, safer than many: https://www.niu.edu/features/11-2-16/safety.shtml
I'd rather have my child in Dekalb than around UIC, Loyola, etc..

Plenty of crime (gang activity) in DeKalb for years, but mostly confined to certain areas. You’re right about the Chicago schools. I wouldn’t feel safe walking the streets on/near those campuses.

Great education. No out of state tuition. A legal weed state. Space to social distance. A good value for the upcoming class.

It looks like they just approved a second one at the Junction Shopping Center.

These kids now days have no idea how good they have it. I had to pick up from the side of 7/11 and smoke at the bench behind Stevenson in Eco Park.

Which, in theory, should be good news for The Junction and Pizza Villa.
Just sayin'...
