monday the electrician said his dudes were sore from a "big" deck project over the weekend. yesterday they had an "emergency" ac repair on someone's house. today he's apparently gotta spend all day visiting a friend who was admitted to the icu last night. he said that was a surprise. last week he had to get antibiotics cuz his cat bit him. i guess he had that coming to him. the week before they had to get the coffee shop lady's apartment prorated. it's been like this every week

we cut him some slack because as wife says, he's got a really big heart. even if he did make littlest one cry, the kids love him. and then we rationalize that because of the great corona, he's probably playing catch up with all these projects ante pandemic

it's going to be nice finally put the house back in order but like i said to one of the help who swung back seeing about a lunch box, yall are part of the family. i was raisin hell on a pile of dirt and he went on to harangue the electrician. appreciated the sympathy. nice people

and then we got fleas. but it ain't so bad. i don't want yall to think i'm complaining, shoot. 'sides, we've been living outta boxes since thanksgiving we're used to disarray i know folks is hard up. when the great pandemic announced itself stateside, there was an unparalleled rush of humanity unseen since our last black swan (they might have to change the definition). with this next sensation we lose sight of how many people were affected by the virus and this year is only halfway over. year. what difference does time make in times of great pandemic. have we even witnessed the start of the fallout? i'm just passing along some stories for levities' sake

we'll make it to the carolina shore one day. the furthest i've been is asheville. i'd say keep it safe ninety two, but it sounds like you're in familiar territory

No Sh!t!

States 8, 9, and 10 since the lockdown are now booked for a fun getaway this week. We leave Sunday for New Orleans. Hotel in French Quarter, dinner reservations at Oceana, and then a stop at the Carousel Bar. Cafe du Monde is open so that alone is worth the trip. Then off to the beaches and casinos in Mississippi. Three nights at the Beau Rivage. And then a day trip to Dauphin Island, Alabama to explore the white sand and surf. Never been there before.

So glad that we can still enjoy personal freedom in this country, and really engage all that it has to offer!

Covid-19 forced us to move our Wedding from June 13th to October. The silver lining is that ended up winning a competition/sweepstakes through Hotels.com and were married last weekend by their spokesperson Captain Obvious. So you all might see me in a commercial in the future.

They also gave us a good amount of online credit to use for our honeymoon. We will now get to stay in some places in Greece we would have never been able to afford.

Ok, I'll explain it like I would to my 6-year old: Your point of reference was to the 2nd greatest war in human history. This makes the reader think you are comparing COVID deaths to a large number. But you were actually comparing COVID deaths to a very small number, both because population was much smaller back then (the US population has more than tripled since then) and because the USA wasn't really involved.


Here, I'll do it the other way: there have been more deaths by drowning in the last two years than from COVID. Does this mean that we should make the same effort toward defeating drowning that we are making towards defeating COVID? Of course not.

Or this way: There are 20 times more refugees from the socialist government in Venezuela than total worldwide deaths from COVID. Does this mean that we should make the same effort towards defeating Venezuela that we are making to defeat COVID? Of course not.

You expressed my sentiment more concisely and eloquently than I could have. We can all disagree on the impact, severity and necessary response to COVID-19 without resorting to inflammatory false equivalencies.

If I had said "US abortions over the last 15 years is equal to 3 Holocausts or 15 Rawandan Genocides" you would (rightfully) be upset.

Coronavirus update...at Jack/Hard Rock Casino. They opened today so I stopped by late this afternoon to see how they were handling PPE.

WOW - the most over the top with PPE of any casino I've stopped into during travels. IMHO way, way too oppressive. Playing any table game there is a acrylic partition between you, the dealer, and the person sitting two seats away. So 4 per table is max. 100% mask usage unless pulled down for a beer sip. But back over nose and mouth for all play so its all hand signals. Tried to answer the guy sitting next to me when he asked a question. He couldn't hear me so I pulled it down to answer again. Immediately was asked to pull it back up - politely. So even polite chatter between players is almost impossible. Then when a player gets up, no one can sit back down until someone shows to sanitize area - which took 10+ minutes. People waiting were pissed. There is more barriers than Children's Hospital.

Craps and roulette had no barrier but players had to stand far apart. Then about every 30 minutes someone came by with an electrostatic sprayer and doused the table, chips, felt, etc. Of course, no poker. Won 100 playing Blackjack and got out of the germaphobe bubble. Talked to a couple guys who just got back from Vegas - masks not required at all.

Vegas is taking about potentially shutting down casinos again. Just saying....

It's really interesting to watch the mask usage by generation/location. At Whole Foods today I'd wager about 90% of people are wearing them. At the bar on Wednesday the only people wearing them were staff.

Weird. I'm not super diligent about it myself or overbearing about it for others, but it seems pretty clear that a wider cultural embrace of masks would likely give us far more protection, at least so far as the studies go.

We never really reached a valley, rather, just kinda warded off a catastrophic first wave that would've overwhelmed the healthcare system. I expect it to go up again, but I'm unclear if it will surpass what we saw the first time. I do worry that after two months people have experienced corona fatigue and no longer take even the simplest precautions seriously. Hell, in Japan they wear masks just to stem the spread of a common cold. Imagine if we had even close to that intiative?

I guess I don’t get the point of a shutdown. If the point is to not overwhelm the healthcare systems, I can get on board with that. If that is the case they should be able to find a desired maximum rate of cases, and that should be announced to the public.

If the goal is to make it go away, that’s not a realistic goal. It’s here. It exists.

If the goal is wait for a vaccine, that’s a huge risk.

To me the reasonable goal would be to get to heard immunity without overwhelming the healthcare system. If you find a vaccine before then, it’s a bonus.

Sorry, if this post doesn’t belong in this thread. Feel free to move it. I admittedly haven’t been following everything in the news. If I’m completely missing anything, please let me know.

You're right with pretty much everything you said. Goal of shutdown was to prevent total collapse of health care infrastructure. If you recall, there was a point where PPE and ventilator capacities were scarce and there was legitimate fear we might need to put patients into makeshift hospitals.

Now, as it became clear we avoided that scenario, the goal of reopening is to see how we can function as a society with the virus. The optimal scenario from there would be thay we develop a vaccine. If not, you have to talk about some big changes to society to endure covid as another high-mortality health crises.

“High-mortality health crisis” among those 70 and older, and those with significant health issues.

Extremely low mortality risk for those 24 and under.

Very low mortality risk for those 45 and under.

Low mortality risk for those 65 and under.
