On Thursday, the president signed an executive order asking federal regulators to revisit the 1996 law that protects websites from liability for what their users post.

The move came days after Twitter added a fact-check label to a pair of Trump's tweets for the first time earlier in the week. The message included a link directing users to a page with news reports debunking the tweets, in which Trump claimed there was "NO WAY" an election with boosted mail-in voting would be legitimate.

A representative for Twitter told NBC News this week that those tweets "contain potentially misleading information about voting processes and have been labeled to provide additional context around mail-in ballots." The spokesperson added that the company rolled out a policy this month to combat misinformation.

Trump said he issued the executive order as a way to safeguard free speech.

"We're here today to defend free speech from one of the greatest dangers it has faced in American history, frankly, and you know what's going on as well as anybody," Trump said. "It's not good."

"They've had unchecked power to censure, restrict, edit, shape, hide, alter virtually any form of communication between private citizens or large public audiences," he added.

You're right, the funding or protections (whatever they may be) aren't guaranteed under their first amendment rights, sure. Removing them explicitly as punishment for using their first amendment rights, however, is unconstitutional, as proven in court many times in our history.

How can it have been proven unconstitutional "many times" when this is due to a law passed in something like 1994? And far as I know it's never even been challenged in court? They got themselves a rather unique situation and policy, now they've decided to abuse it.

But it seems to me, legal scholar that I am (I have basically similar qualifications to claim that title as what Barack Obama had), that if you start to edit content, then you lose your ISP exemption, and you can be sued for any harm that results from anything that anybody posts.

The one exception is the Napster exception. Where people are using your platform to perform illegal activities (copyright infringement in Napster's case) you do have some duty to prevent that. But that is not the case here.

It's hilarious when a liberal make references to the constitution. Trying to overthrow a sitting president via fabrication and intimidation, limiting free speech on campuses across the country, etc. etc. are apparently acceptable actions for them.

They want their way and let nothing stop them from getting it. Unfortunately for them, they've run into to a President who won't allow that and they just can't stand it.

The hole liberals have dug for themselves is too deep to escape, especially by November.
