RE: 2020 Football Recruiting
Maxx was the best defensive player of this decade by a mile, but to say never is a lot........When E Mich football was atrocious Jason Jones was arguably in the same class as Maxx! POC wasn't bad either! The key is recruit and develop.........Next years team unfortunately doesn't have anyone even close, regarding speed off the edge! Davis-Balogun on film looked real good!

247 has him listed as a 3-star d-tackle?? He is 5'10" 232 though, everything else I see has him listed as a DE or OLB, that seems more accurate. Had offers from Ball State, NIU, WMU, Toledo.
Good tape. He is short but talented.
I hope he’s an L.B.......if I recall, the JUCO Tariq Speights had the best hit in last years spring game. We will need him to step up this year. Overall our D.L. doesn’t look too shabby on paper. I see Clay Holford and Turan Rush as starting DEs and Eddington and Woo as the DTs. Maxx was a once once in a lifetime player for EMU. We may never have a DE like him again and Maxx set a high standard at EMU and for any school including P5s.
Agree on Maxx. His performance level was so high we truly don't appreciate Jerry Harris and POC, two other great DE's as much as we should.
Agree on all of that. I'd add that I really liked what I saw out of Mike Haney as a RS-freshmen as the year went on. Seems like a high motor guy that will get the most out of his ability, similar to a Brody Hoying on the d-line.

Who was the short DT that Kent had a few years ago who was really, really good?
Wonder if he is the type of athlete who is simply too short (not too small) and can play despite not have 'measurables?'

Roosevelt Nix. He made it to the NFL as a fullback, ironically.

I loved watching Maxx play but POC might have been a hair better just because he had so little support on the rest of the line and was constantly getting doubled.

Jerry Harris was a beast in his sophomore year(pre-injury) opposite POC and Maxx was just plain out of this world after that. Nevertheless all three were great and came to EMU when the latest bowl appearance was decades ago. I, and I am sure Creighton deeply appreciate that sacrifice those guys made. We are suddenly relevant with respect to recruiting.

Very nice commit. Look at those offers! West Virginia, Kentucky, Iowa State, Indiana, Maryland, etc.

Times are weird and the unexpected becomes the expected.
Today is the first day of the spring signing period for basketball, so instead of getting a MBB recruit we get a FB recruit.
Strange times, indeed.

Maybe, this is our Lee and JTIV, not for the same reasons obviously, but Creighton taking A chance on someone! I bet he starts in the fall! Those offers aren't where MAC players go.......ala JTIV.........

Yes. I'm sure coaches keep the channels open for recruits who they think could fall for one reason or another.
Kind of like spotting that special young lady and be there when she breaks up with her boy friend...
The dynamic is the same. In this case, it appears that the recruit was going to IU and that avenue apparently closed (say they had filled their quota at his position). Then the choice was JUCO or EMU was just sitting there 'down the road' ready to scoop him up.

Doubt he starts. True freshmen OL rarely see the field and I dont think one ever has on an EMU team since CC had been here. There's depth and experience ahead of him.
Nice player to get for the future though. If he had academic issues he could really use a redshirt year so he could learn how to be a college student before worrying about playing on Saturdays.

Agree, but our OL was atrocious last season, we couldn't run the football! He's 6'6" 340 pounds with big boy offers, I realize they're only offers, but I bet all 5 perceived starters next year didn't have his pedigree! Why did W Mich dominate the MAC under Fleck? This kinda player/talent, Big 10 talent! JTIV started from day 1...…..This kid has the same type of size, and offers, which MAC recruits typically don't have!

The article clarifies what I suspected is that Smith did not meet IU's academic standards or NCAA's standards and he apparently later got his grades up AND he was there for the picking...
What I like is that we continue to bring in highly rated OLs and simply based on numbers, some of them should pan out.
I wouldn't be surprised if in say 2 years we have one of the best OLs in the MAC.
