My wife (Registered Nurse; 20 years experience with cancer patients) is convinced many US residents have already had it and recovered without being diagnosed.
I am as well. I think this has gone on longer than 4 months. That being said, I've been ordered to no longer be in rooms with 30 or more people by my employer. So I can't go out to eat, go to the bar, etc. That just is not reasonable. How do I go grocery shopping?

Getting back to the OP and how this will affect football, I believe it will play itself out like the flu, well before the end of summer. The greatest long term damage will be the lingering effect on the national and global economy.

The number of deaths, while sad and tragic for those involved, will only be a blip on the long term perspective, at least in comparison to the usual seasonal illnesses.

It’s not seasonal and this thing is just getting started. The seasonal argument is a myth.

No one can dogmatically state that with any certainty. You could be right, be we won't know until warm weather is well underway. The flu flourishes in cold, dry air. It generally disappears as temperatures rise. Other coronaviruses do the same, but not all.

The higher death rates in some areas could be driven by a number of factors including inadequate testing of the general population (especially China) and the age of the affected population. Scientific American had an interesting piece about this.

Covid-19 killed 166 people in Italy yesterday.

The number of U.S. cases doubled from 500 to over 1,000 in the past 36 hours.

Sounds like "next to nothing," does it?

But since this is a FB thread - - to tell the truth, the whole pandemic will probably be over and done with before summer FB practice starts in earnest.

So - - right now, should folks be protecting themselves? Absolutely!

But FB season is months away. It would be very surprising if the coronavirus is stilll raging out of control 3 or 4 months from now.

Yet it won't be surprising if the common flu, that kills up to 70K EVERY year returns to do it's damage again. Should we protect ourselves from the common flu? I get a flu shot every year, do you? I wash my hands often when touching anything, do you you? I cringe when I see guys leave public restrooms without washing their hands at all. The fist pump has been common in the local Y for years in lieu of handshakes.

If the coronavirus killed healthy people at a clip greater than 1% I would worry. It doesn't. Not even close. Korea has the best numbers and its around .7% for people with underlying health issues. And before you or anyone else jumps in with "Old people are people, too!" If it isn't coronavirus it is something else that can (will) kill them: flu, shingles, pneumonia, measles, rheumatism, dementia, diabetes, heart disease, etc.

Do: Take normal precautions (wash hands, stay home if ill, segregate nursing homes and long-term care facilities)
Don't: Cancel large events, stop travelling, hoard supplies

We all struggle to override fear with the uniquely human ability to apply reason and logic. Sometimes it is a lost cause.

Overreaction has a real impact on people's livelihood - particularly those of lower income disproportionately represented in the entertainment, lodging, and travel businesses.

I think the media would change their tune if they were the ones financially harmed by the crowd control measures. Some of them are griping about the new locker room policy, lol.

Right (?) - - the nation's main concern should be on "financial harm."

Harm to the nation's population should be considered nothing more than a trivial concern.

Dollars are more important than people. I get it.

The Corona Virus will be over once the election is done. Sure, it may still be spreading around, but the media will quit hyping it so people will think it's not as big a deal.

Toilet paper shall return to the shelves and Trump will return to the White House.

Hello straw man. It's called perspective.
You could save 1.25 million lives every year if you mandated autonomous vehicles. We spend $8 billion on the TSA every year. There have been less than 50 terrorism related deaths since 9-11.

The bottom line is that, by the time the FB season gets started, covid-19 will probably be a distant memory.

The concern isn't about August. It's about March and April.

According the John Hopkins: "As of Mar. 9, 2020, the flu is showing much more of an impact on Americans than COVID-19" and the Flu has an estimated 1 billion cases worldwide; 9.3 million to 45 million cases in the U.S. per year with 291,000 to 646,000 deaths worldwide; 12,000 to 61,000 deaths in the U.S. per year. https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/c...vs-the-flu

So you favor using the same measures for the flu as for COVID 19, right?

I get it.

Go ahead and stick your head in the sand like an ostrich, if you want.

Covid-19 is not the flu. Everyone with half a brain knows that, by now.

The big picture is that this will have no impact on FB season, which is 5 1/2 months away.
