Michigan State Opening
Detroit Free Press

@freep
The frontrunner to replace Mark Dantonio as Michigan State football coach is Luke Fickell, according to sources with knowledge of the athletic department's thinking.

Fickell would be a great choice.

Doesn't mean MSU at this time would be a great move for him. Sounds like there could be some recruiting violation issues. You basically lose a year of recruiting with the late resignation. He may decide MSU is worth it, but hard to know what he wants. I do know he's declined interest in several P5 jobs the last two seasons.

Tell that to Matthew Rhule.

RE: Michigan State Opening
This is the first job I've been worried about.

But Fickell is kind of weird dude when it comes to how he views this. I feel like he's scarred from his time in the mess after Tressel got fired. It's possible he isn't exactly anxious to go back to that situation.

Especially considering that it just came out that Dantonio was committing multiple NCAA violations. MSU would need to offer like 8 years with a hefty guarantee. Which, like Baylor, they are capable of doing.

He may leave, but I don't think it's a guarantee. Buckle up, it should be interesting.

If he does take the job, it will be either be Marcus Freeman or Kerry Coombs as the new UC coach. Guaranteed. Won't be much mystery about that one.

I'd put my money on Freeman in that scenario.

With violations, he probably will be given a longer contract and guarantee. Hard to say no to Big 10 money.

With another 4 star to be signed tomorrow, UC will have 3.

As I said, MSU is going to have to throw a TON of dough at Fickell, which they likely will.

Would be a big loss for UC. Fickell can coach AND recruit.

Yeah, I know the B1G's got all the cash. But... it's not like he's working for peanuts right now.

I'm not being the "he says he loves Cincinnati and his kids like it there" guy, but i think he would rather wait and take a job where he doesn't have to clean up Dantonio's steaming pile of fecal matter.

Isn't he just saying MSU would have at least 2 four star recruits right away?

They've already signed LOIs, which they could ask out of, but the kids we're discussing are local to UC. A lot of the appeal was staying local.

If they asked, UC would release them, but I'd bet you with a lot of confidence they'd be going to a school that wasn't Michigan St. A guy like Evan Prater is more likely to end up at OSU or Penn St if he isn't staying home.

This is one of several jobs I was worried about. I don't blame him if he left, but the timing sucks for UC.

And everyone talks about the head coach and how much he is getting paid. Think about his buddies that are assistants that will get a hefty raise also. You are friends with them and their families, they have been loyal to you. Hard to not let them cash in their lotto ticket.
