If we fire BW and pay the $600,000 buyout, can ODU realistically afford to pay a new head coach and new staff salaries that are not the bottom of the barrel for CUSA?
If not, it is time to start cutting sports immediately and serious questions need to be asked about what we are doing with football. This program already had a larger budget than the rest of CUSA, if they can't figure out how to pay a miniscule buyout, and pay a competitive salary to a new coach, they need to answer some tough questions about how they plan to compete. There is no windfall out there for them. They need to Doo their jobs.

Well the first sport to go will be wrestling and that's a sizable portion of the donor pool. We really going to cut wrestling so we can play Charlotte for nothing in a 20% full stadium?

If the budget is so messed up why did we just add womens volleyball. It would have made more sense to cut a sport to reach title 9 compliance instead of add 1 then a couple years later start cutting.

I hate to cut any, but if it meant more bowl games, NCAA/NITs etc, I could live without varsity swimming, diving, golf, wrestling and tennis for the men. I really only follow hoops & football while keeping an eye on soccer and baseball.

Does it? I’m reluctant to get rid of a sport that has won national championships and fits in so nicely with our coastal campus on the river. If it had to happen, do it, but it would be sad. I intentionally left sailing off the list. Also, cut sports could still be club sports for students

They're not going to have to cut sports to pay a buyout. Come on people.

So the answer to my question is that nobody on this board actually knows the answer to my question.

I’ve said numerous times over the last month that at this point ODU is not in a position to pay $600k plus a big salary for the new coach, which is why we should temper our expectations.

I read on some link that some coaches have their payoff decreased by the amount of salary they receive at another school and the contract requires them to actively seek employment. Have no idea if this is standard verbage or a special case so have no idea if this applies to Wilder. Additionally, I doubt the payoff is a lump sum, probably spread out over the course of a year.

If they don't get a donor to do it, it'll take the board and Broderick approving spending money out of the ODAF endowment. There is more than enough in there to cover what they need. Ideally you don't touch that very often and they did last year to pay for the scoreboard and new field.

Out of expenses broken out specifically by sports, sailing is the cheapest per the Equity in Athletics database.

Thanks for the intel. Does the board meet tomorrow? If not, then we will not have a decision until they meet. Or they have already made a decision.

Wood and Broderick meet tomorrow.

And they must already have the board’s consent to take a certain action. Thank you for the intel. Now we wait.

It's not Intel, just logic.

Oh, come on, don’t tease us and get our hopes up too high! That would make all of us just giddy, especially with a new football coach hiring decision.
