Sad, as ECU outplayed Cincy. A whopping 35 first downs and 640 yards. But ECU was hammered with penalties and Cincy got the lucky pick-6 and survived.

Why do lie on purpose? UC probably had 150 penalty yards much more than ECU.
Its "sad" to him because it keeps the AAC as the frontrunner for the Access bowl. Now why a fan of a team in that conference would dislike that is beyond me

Um, for the same reason that every Alabama fan I know was rooting for FSU to beat Auburn in the 2014 BCS title game, and every Auburn fan I know was rooting for Clemson to beat Alabama in last year's CFP title game?

To a *real* fan, team rivalry easily trumps conference. Easily.

Now, just take this concept and writ it large:

I make no bones about it: I do *not* want the AAC to get the NY6 bid, unless the team getting it happens to be USF. And if the AAC happens to get the bid, I want the AAC team to LOSE not win.

Why on earth would I want competing programs like Cincy or Memphis or Houston or UCF to get an NY6 bid, thus boosting their profile above that of USF? And then win it, boosting it more?

THAT in fact would be crazy.

See, I think where your vision fails you is that you are a Cards fan, and UofL is in a "destination conference". As such, you have every reason to hope the conference does great, because that benefits you as well. So if Clemson is playing in the Rose Bowl, you root for them. Makes perfect sense.

USF is NOT in a destination conference. None of the AAC teams are. We all want out, to a P5 conference. What that means is that ALL of the teams in the AAC are rivals for USF for the biggest prize we are angling for, promotion to P5. So why on earth would I want some other AAC team to enhance its resume with a NY6 berth? The slight benefit USF gets from an AAC team in the NY6 is a pittance compared to the prestige and propaganda value that the rival team will get from being in that bowl.

What really makes no sense, no sense at all, is when you see fans of Houston or Cincy or ECU on this board rooting for UCF to get the NY6 bid, and then rooting for them to beat Auburn or LSU in the game! THAT is nutso, and for the life of me I can't comprehend it.

I see the AAC as a growth stock and the pac12 as a mature stock in a saturated market where they are locked into a closed market (western time zone and far less of a rabid fan base). The reason that you've given for why the AAC is getting so much more exposure is precisely why I think that ESPN views us basically a wash with the pac12. They can get comparable ratings of the pac12 (what 20-25mil) with the AAC (8mil). I will guarantee you that ESPN will never bid on the pac12 as long as they have the AAC. On a side note any ratings the AAC has ever gotten have been with no promo cost. How much does Fox have to spend on promoting the pac12 for not necessarily much better ratings?

Really? You see the AAC as a growth stock? I hope you are not giving investment advice for a living. The AAC has a $7 million TV deal per school per year with ESPN through 2031-2032. So how do they grow that? The Pac-12 handed out revenue of $31 million per school, which sucks compared to the other power conference schools. On the other hand, the Pac-12 TV contract is up in 2024-2025 and they are the only conference with 100% ownership of their network, which gives them flexibility and options.

The Pac-12 and the AAC are in different worlds. For example, Cincinnati in 2017-2018 had an athletic budget of $48 million. UCLA had $55 million in 2017-2018 in athletic donations alone and a $131 million athletic budget. Cincinnati swept UCLA in both basketball and football the past two years, yet Mick Cronin left Cincinnati basketball for UCLA and the Cincinnati AD is headed to USC. The potential at UCLA and USC is significantly better.

If we are talking talent per conference, this is an example, the 2019 NFL Draft by college conference:

SEC: 64
Big Ten: 40
Pac-12: 33
ACC: 28
Big 12: 26
AAC: 11
Mountain West: 10

That talent is the reason that a one-loss Pac-12 school will get into a college football playoff before an unbeaten AAC school.

Your rant is proving my point better than I ever could. With all those financial and talent advantages the pac12 flounders on the actual field/court of play. With all of that prestige and history (which I do respect. I'm only making a point) the AAC ratings are very comparable to the pac12s'. Heck head to head Memphis vs SMU actually did better than USC vs Oregon. The AAC actually has a winning record against the pac12. Now from a business perspective what do you think ESPN is thinking. 07-coffee3

We knew you lacked reading comprehension skills, but this drives the fact home emphatically. Unlike USF, Georgetown IS in its destination conference. It is not competing with St Johns, Villanova, Seton Hall, etc. for promotion to a better conference. Thus, as in the Louisville-Clemson example above, it makes sense for me to root for those teams in the NCAA tournament, because to the extent they bring glory to the Big East, Georgetown benefits from that.

So nothing "odd" about what I said, the oddness is in your brain.

RE: Laughable Scores - 2019 Football - Week 10
I'll weigh in on this:

I am not a fan of any one conference. Cheering for a league in a broad and passionate sense ... that is an example of "sports nerdism" at a level I cannot stomach. I've noted in the past that I follow the athletic programs of 12 universities that collectively are members of seven Division I conferences. Of those, there is only one (Vanderbilt) for which I am fully passionate (academics, architecture, campus planning, personnel matters, athletics, etc.) But even in the case of Vandy, I do NOT root for the SEC. I love the Memphis Tigers (parents attended) and also pull for Cincinnati too (brother attended) but I am not, in the truest sense, a "fan" of the American Athletic Conference.

However, IF any American team other than UM or UC — let's say, SMU — is playing in the NY6 bowl this December ... I want SMU to win. Why? It's not because I care about SMU and want them to be gain traction on Memphis and Cincinnati (which a victory might help the Mustang program in doing). Rather, it's because any money, media attention, street cred, fans talking, recognition, etc. that can come from an SMU win can, at least in theory, indirectly benefit Memphis and Cincy. Conversely, if SMU loses (to whatever P5 team)... that does not help Memphis or Cincy in any manner. SMU winning and building upon its brand, in this hypothetical, is "less bad" for Memphis and Cincy than SMU losing IMO (others might disagree). It's selfish but it's true. Now, if SMU loses (in this hypothetical), I will lose no sleep.

Now, you could ask, "What if SMU is playing an SEC team in the NY6 bowl?" IF the SEC team wins, that can "indirectly" help Vanderbilt, correct?" I would say "yes." But I would add this: SEC fanboys get on my nerves much more than AAC fanboys. So I would not be as pleased for VU in that case as I would be for Memphis and Cincy in the other example.

I agree with about 95 percent of all Quo's posts I've read on this board over the years and actually find his no-nonsense, consistent and contrarian approach rather refreshing. But this post is dead on.

Now, I do feel the Big East is very prestigious. But it's not a Power 5 league. There are only five of those. If DePaul (have followed since 1987 and miss the old days) is invited to the ACC or Big Ten (in some insane hypothetical) and can make, say, $10 million more per year than it can in the NBE ... DePaul is gone and I'm on the bandwagon. And UConn might get that ACC chance. Who knows, Villanova could get a call up down the road. Unlikely but you never know.

And that is why ESPN loves us and the marketing campaign the AAC launched with P6 has worked.

Also the whole Boise beat BYU factor means nothing, USF beat BYU and they are having a down year. So by the logic that was stated USF could beat Boise. And when the year ends and its time for the CCG for the AAC, it will be two ranked teams and the winner is going to the Cotton Bowl because BSU is not going to be able to catch up.

Boise State lost to BYU because of their QB was injured from the week before. If he was not injured? Boise would be higher than SMU. Since he is back? They beat a strong San Jose State team. Boise State was not punished in the polls since they took into account the starting QB sat out.

Cincinnati went through 5 QBs 1 year and still made a BCS bowl.

If someone takes pride in regionalism, more power to them. At the very least, someone rooting for 12 schools shouldn’t be casting stones on people who root for leagues.

As a UTEP fan, I root for all C-USA schools and G5’s vs P5 opponents regardless if it’s OOC or in bowls. It’s an “us versus them” mentality which mostly fans from G5 schools can understand.

As a Penn State fan, I don’t root for any B1G teams and as far as I’m concerned, Michigan and Ohio State can lose every game. I learned there’s no such a thing as “conference unity” in the Big Ten.

There’s a fair amount of Big Ten pride in the midwest. I spot a shirt or hat with the Big Ten schools (pre-MD/RU) pretty much every weekend.

If someone takes pride in regionalism, more power to them. At the very least, someone rooting for 12 schools shouldn’t be casting stones on people who root for leagues.

That is a very fair point you make. My post was a bit insulting and I admit that and apologize. I should been more clear and noted I would not be pleased with myself if I were a "major fan" of any one conference. If somebody else wants to be, that's fine. And if that person is classy about it...no criticisms from me. It's just not my thing.

Very well made points that many folks can relate to.

It's more a respect thing in the BIG over actually rooting for it as a whole. We have each others backs (except for Michigan, lol) and it's about being proud of who you/we are. You don't survive as long as this conference has without support for one another. As I've said many times, I love all schools in the west division except for Minnesota. As for the East, Penn State and Michigan can lose every game as far as I'm concerned, I hate you but still respect you. With that being said, Penn State deserves to be ranked ahead of Clemson and Alabama up to this point.

Peace!

The SEC has each other's back as well. It's part of "It just means more." So which two conferences are the strongest? The SEC and Big 10. Which two conferences have the most cohesion? The SEC and Big 10. Which two conferences earn the most? The SEC and Big 10

Could it be that having each others back, sharing media revenue equally, pulling for each other when we aren't playing our other member schools, brings the cohesion that brings the success?

I think the answer to that is yes. Our ratings are higher in part because we both tend to watch most of our schools at least for a little while each week.

So I don't mind when the other 3 conferences chide our cohesion. It's only done out of envy, and for those who don't truly understand it, it is an exemplification of why they aren't as successful.

07-coffee3

First off, it was not a rant. Just facts. Secondly, you ignore the facts and cite a ratings wins for the AAC over the PAC-12. The Pac-12 is having another down year in football. I would admit that. Even with that, if Oregon wins their last three conference games (Arizona, at ASU and Oregon State) and they win the Pac-12 Championship, they have a pretty decent shot at making the playoffs.

ESPN has had better times with the Pac-12. Oregon drew 6.86 million against Auburn on ABC and Oregon also drew 3.62 million for a Saturday afternoon game on ABC against Washington. If ESPN was unhappy with their agreement with the Pac-12, then why did they offer to extend it? In 2023-2024, the Pac-12 will receive $321 million in the last year of their TV deal, with $160.5 million coming from ESPN. ESPN offered an extension into well into the 2030's and would take over the distribution of the Pac-12 Network. The Pac-12 said no, but it shows that ESPN has not lost interest in the Pac-12.

True.

I spent a few weeks in Bloomington, IN back in the mid 2000s and enjoyed my stay there. The best college town in America IMO is Madison, WI. I’ve been to Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin and yes, Midwesterners are proud of who they are which includes rooting for their Big Ten schools. From the West, I don’t really hate anybody except for Minnesota this Saturday lol. I really want Nebraska to be the force they were before. From the East, I have more respect and fear for Ohio State and Michigan rather than hate, I’ve always liked Sparty and feel really bad for Rutgers. I don’t think they were prepared for the big stage. I’m indifferent to Maryland.
