Central Michigan Schadenfreude
Career MAC Coaching Records
For anyone like me who doesn't want Central to have anything, Frank Solich is just one win away from the top spot. CMU is unlikely to ever find a coach who can win that many games again.

Can't believe Frank has been there for 15 years. Seems like just yesterday he got hired there.

RE: Central Michigan Schadenfreude
Lots of wins. Lots of losses, too.
I went on a search to look at college coaching longevity, and it's just a brutal, thankless business. I think other sports are different because the important of each game is less. Losing a game in a hockey season or a basketball season is not a big deal, but one loss in a football season is ruinous (with our current playoff set-up). I found this great quote from Frank Beamer: "After a while, every loss is just earth-shattering. The world was coming to an end. It's talked about the next two or three days on the radio. It's devastating. And then if you can win a game it's like, 'Whew, thank goodness. Who do we play next week?'"

Solich hasn't had a losing record in MAC play since 2008. Wow.

Impressive in a "meh" kind of way.
How many MAC Championships has he won?
How have his teams performed against their primary rival, Miami?
Good career for Solich, and Ohio is always competitive. However, it comes down to the hardware in your house. You play to win championships.

True but when you consider Ohio's history for the 40-plus years prior he's done very well.

Agree. He turned a bottom feeder into an annual contender.

Solich has won or shared four East championships.
And he is 11-3 vs. Miami.

Can't say that about Herb Deromedi.

Do you have any idea of how bad Ohio's program was before Solich? You have to go back to Bill Hess (1958-77) to find any coach over .500. Jim Grobe was correctly considered a miracle worker (and got a P5 job out of it) for going exactly .500 over 5 years, and he never even won a division title.
Solich's losses in the MACC are certainly a bit of a black mark, but the guy took an absolutely downtrodden graveyard of a job and has done remarkably well. Frankly, you don't sound like you have any perspective on this at all.

He's Ohio's Bill Cubit but has more wins because Ohio is in the east. Pretty good, almost always a contender, but not good enough.

Yeah, and then you kept bringing up the lack of championships as a qualifier. Why do that continuously unless you're trying to downplay it? You wouldn't harp on a successful coach's lack of SEC championships at Vanderbilt, or Big Ten champs at Rutgers. Basically what we're dealing with in terms of historical success.

If WMU can't win it all this fall, I hope Ohio and Solich do. It would address that "black mark" wmubroncopilot referenced.

More like their Chris Creighton, except more consistently successful. Cubit may have taken over a team coming off a bad year, but the history was nowhere near as dim.
Although I guess if you ask GullLake we were basically as bad as Ohio because we hadn't won a championship in a while.

Dude, the thread was initiated comparing Solich to Deromedi. Can't do that without addressing the "black mark" you referenced. Championships matter and Ohio's last one was 1968.
Please read full threads for context before posting.

I read the whole thread. You have apparently decided that Deromedi is undoubtedly a better coach than Solich based on his championships.
Deromedi took over after Roy Kramer, who went 83-32 at CMU, won a national title in D2 and went 25-7 in CMU's first 3 years in the MAC (10-1 year before HD).
Deromedi won 2 MACCs and shared another. The 2 outright were in 79 and 80, largely with Kramer's clearly very good players. His shared title in 1990 was really not much different than Ohio winning a division title.
You can look up Ohio's dismal record pre-Solich for yourself, I'm tired of doing the work.
I understood all your posts just fine. Consider context before making your blanket cliched statements.

Well, Herb Deromedi is in the College Football Hall of Fame....
And, he was Kramer's defensive coordinator also a lead recruiter. He had a lot to do with those teams he won his first championships with.
I addressed Ohio's "dismal record pre-Solich" in a previous post you ignored because you didn't put in the "work" to read it.

Other coaches have won bigger but he’ll have won more. Longevity records in the MAC basically mean you never achieved greatness or you wouldn’t have stayed long enough to achieve them.
