RE: Now what?
Attendance at ALL college games are down. This is a norm nowadays.
Personally, I prefer going to the game, while listening to the radio of the game.

Aren't the tarps always on the south end?
Rumor is that Rudd has quietly commissioned a group for another study of a (smaller) on-campus stadium.

In 2015, we removed the tarp because ticket sales going into this week were very strong. ole miss didn't even sell 1/3rd of their tickets. It's not like the stadium will be empty. Instead of 58k being a sell out, it's now 52k.
People acting like this is a game changer are off their rockers.
Correct. I think 40k is probably the max we will ever draw for home games that don't involve Ole Miss, Tennessee, Mississippi State, or Arkansas...and even then the product on the field has to be consistent with what it's been the past 5 years or so. If the product slips, attendance will go back to the 20k range of recent memory.
I agree with the basic premise, but the "product on the field has to be consistent" applies both ways. Ole Miss is bringing maybe half of the number of people as last time (when they were ranked highly). Ole Miss fans don't want to come to the Liberty Bowl to watch the Rebels lose, even (or maybe especially) fans that live in Memphis and never travel to Oxford. A UT / U of M game right now wouldn't draw near as many as the matchups in the late 90's because UT has been down for so long.

Smaller stadiums with more experiences are the future.
I still like the plan that former interim president of the University of Memphis & Saks CEO Brad Martin wanted the University of Memphis to buy Audubon Park & build a On-Campus Stadium there.
It was the perfect location as well.
Will the University of Memphis take over Audubon park?
The Baylor example of McClane Stadium in Waco TX is a great example of what would work here.
That new Baylor stadium is great. It also cost about $270 million dollars. There is NO WAY the University of Memphis can afford that. The only reason Baylor can afford it is because they get $33 million a year from being a P5 member. They also have to now pay yearly maintenance cost, the U of M pays nothing in maintaining the LB. You could go the cheap route like UCF did, but their stadium in now falling apart and they are going to take a bath on it. The LB is fine.

There won't be but about 45,000. Ole Miss only sold 3,000 tickets. Memphis sold 22,000 season tickets. Probably the most ever.

Quote: We had hoped to prevent Nexstar from pulling WATN-ABC and WLMT-CW from our Memphis customers' lineups and we offered Nexstar more money to keep them available. Nexstar simply said no and elected to remove them instead. Nexstar has chosen to hold our customers in Memphis hostage and put them into the center of its negotiations. This is the same old Nexstar playbook. They pull or threaten to pull their signals from customers of many distributors to increase fees for "free TV" stations that far exceed their value. They've done it to Cox Cable, DISH and Charter Spectrum and now to us.
ABC broadcast network content aired by WATN-ABC has lost about half its primetime audience over the past five years. Despite this, Nexstar is demanding the largest increase AT&T has ever seen proposed by any content provider and, on top of that, Nexstar wants payment for customers not authorized to receive its stations, as well as other stations and a low-rated cable network they only hope to own.
By demanding payment for customers who choose to receive Nexstar stations for free over the air or via new alternatives, Nexstar is also reducing consumer choice. This behavior should not be rewarded by allowing Nexstar to become the largest broadcaster in America through its proposed acquisition of Tribune Broadcasting's 42 local stations.
AT&T remains on the side of customer choice and value. Our goal is always to deliver the content our customers want at a value that makes sense to them. Nexstar is only on the side of gouging their affiliates and consumers for free over-the-air stations that are viewed less and less each day.
Viewers can watch WATN-ABC and WLMT-CW over the air on channels 24 and 30 and often online at the station websites. ABC and CW typically stream primetime series at ABC.com and cwtv.com and to fans using the WatchABC and CW mobile apps. We've always fought hard on our customers' behalf and that's why we are fighting for them again here. We regret any inconvenience Nexstar has caused and appreciate our Memphis customers' patience. These types of dispute are often resolved quickly, and we hope that will be the case here as well.

47k for AR, 41k+ for ECU and S Ill in 2017 say that isn't the case at all.
WHEN we win the AAC, go to the NY6 bowl and beat them, I think you see attendance spike upwards. We will continue slow and steady growth as long as we keep winning.
We have seen growth in every aspect of the program. HH membership, TSF giving, giving to facilities enhancement, season ticket sales and pretty much everything else has gone up recently.

Other than every new NFL stadium, every SEC team that has won a conference championship, every winning Big10, Big12 and many ACC teams that have all had recent expansions in the last decade disagree with that point... sure.
Oh wait, since this is an article talking about soccer stadiums then I completely agree.

We have the best fan support basketball/football of any/every non-P5 school. We always have, good team or bad team. Quit comparing us to P5 schools since we:
1. do not have their resources
2. do not get their media exposure
3. can not play for a national championship (football)
But I know that if we were in a P5 conference, even a crappy BIG12 left over one, we would put teams like Mississippi, who has never even made it to an SEC championship game in football, maybe not in basketball either, to shame.

RE: Now what?
IMO one thing that makes college football so unique (and college sports in general for that matter) is that it's not necessarily about winning championships. Only a few teams do. Rather, it's about building a legacy, for lack of a better term. Part of having that legacy or pedigree is what attracts new fans to the program. Memphis football is definitely doing that. It just takes a long period of time of sustained success to successfully build a program's pedigree to the point where attendance is strong.
We're not there yet, but we're getting really, really close. One aspect that will have to change to reach the next level, including attendance, will be expanding the UofM brand beyond the Memphis metro area and make the school a regional draw. Almost every big CFB program brings most of its fans from outside the county. Hell, Tuscaloosa's population almost doubles on gamedays. Becoming a regional fanbase takes time, maybe even a decade or more of winning, but we're most certainly on the right track. The best piece of evidence is a map Dr. Rudd tweeted this week.
https://twitter.com/UofMemphisPres/statu...55168?s=20
This is exciting stuff. The success of our athletic program is paying off. Our profile is on the rise. Let's just hope it keeps trending this way.
