If they are going to use a stop gap measure---then they will just let UConn pay for the right to stay a few extra years.
Aresco said UConn FB leaves with the rest of their sports. UConn isn't going to pay to keep their FB in the AAC. They are going to pay to take it out. Its called an exit fee. UConn may stay an extra year (2020-21) to protect their FB ,but when their sports leave, they all leave.
Correct. He's also stated we arent adding anyone. The post I responded to was a hypothetical situation where the AAC was going to add UMass for a few years. Im simply stating---why would the AAC do that when they already have a member that would be willing to take less than a full share to play football in the AAC on a temporary basis. By taking less than a full share---UConn is basically "paying" to stay in a few years extra.
Totally correct. It's a fair chance this actually comes to pass, because it kicks the can down the road a few years for needing a waiver (Division-less football may arrive by '22), and keeps the schedule balanced, all while paying UConn $0 of the TV earnings and distributions. (They would be an Independent, whose games would count for AAC schools)
The important thing is it keeps the CCG safe, which is key for the full ESPN payout.
Well with today's 17 million dollar exit fee announcement the can is getting kicked down the road with UConn FB in it. They are done after the 2019-20 season. Aresco held to his word that UConn FB would not be allowed to stay in the AAC when the other UConn sports left.
They got that done waaaay quicker than I thought they would. This should really end any debate about this move being about money. The AAC total conference payout under the 2 million a year TV deal was still 1 million per team MORE than the current total per team conference distribution in the Big East. With the 5 million dollar TV raise, plus the Navy TV deal, plus anything CBS gives the AAC for basketball, along with the increased payout for the 2020-2025 bowl lineup--- the AAC total conference distribution will be AT LEAST 6 MILLION dollars a year more than the Big East distribution. When you consider that financially---the Big East move will start out 20.5 million dollars in the hole---and football is being thrown under the bus----there is zero chance this was done "to make more money".
This was done to renew old rivalries and to reinvigorate the fan base. They are 40 million in the red every year. The only way this helps change that is if they downgrade to FCS or more likely----cut the program entirely. The lease on the football stadium has a few more years to run. Watch that lease closely. That will tell you where this is heading.

Whoa - did not notice that. Exprires June 2023, so four seasons left (three as independent).
UConn has an out to downgrade or drop football.
Frankly, their attendance was FCS-level last year, as they averaged 10,000 actual butts in seats.

What’s to stop them from resigning the lease?
People need to stop hating the Independent push. It’s better for the sport.
Next, bowl games need to break away from these garbage conference contracts and bid on the best teams and fits. Now THAT is a bowl season I could get behind.

Nothing stopping them from signing a new lease.
But they have an out if they want to downgrade or drop football.

RE: Aresco opens the door for Colorado State
Colorado State move to th AAC wouldn’t be appreciably more than a lateral move for their athletics. Not enough to account for slight increase in travel and loss of conference rivalries. Sure they could schedule Wyoming and AirForce as OOC, but they’d want to schedule the Buffs as well. So their OOC schedule would be Wyoming, AFA, Buffs and 1 other (probably P5 or fcs).
And the long term look at Rams moving to AAC is too much of a risk that AAC breaks apart from a couple/few members going to P5 via realignment. At this moment, realignment looks not likely. However, things could change in the next few years that might trigger the P5 to make some autonomous decisions. Anything unforeseen is possible. Not worth it for CSU. Although New Mexico State probably wouldn’t mind CSU moving to AAC.

Also worth keeping in mind that it's a contract that State U has with a state agency, so it's not exactly like it's an opportunity to walk away clean. No argument that football can't continue to average 10k attendance without some sort of changes being made, but Connecticut has a lot more "UConn fans" than it does "college football fans", and so I believe you can pretty easily double that attendance number or more if the team can simply be 6-6ish against even a bad independent schedule.

Totally agree with the red bolded statement above.
