+1 vote then for the DIII Southwestern Pirates out of Georgetown??

Rice leads the series 16-5. We played every year from 1913-1930, but only three of those were SWC contests.

I had the same thought, but was too lazy tolook up stats.

Wasn't OU in the SWC at one time?

Edit: Looked it up.

Its early years saw fluctuation in membership; Southwestern (a comparatively smaller school) dropped out of the conference in 1916, and Southern Methodist University (SMU) joined in 1918; Texas Christian University (TCU) became a member in 1923. Rice University left the conference in 1916, only to re-join in 1918.

Phillips University was a conference member for one year (1920). Oklahoma left in 1919 to join the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association (later known as the Big Eight Conference), and was followed by Oklahoma A&M in 1925. However, the series between Texas and Oklahoma would continue as a non-conference matchup in the annual Red River Rivalry game held in Dallas. From 1925 until 1991, the University of Arkansas would be the only conference member not located within the state of Texas.

RE: Some football schedule notes
IIRC, LSU was technically also a member of the SWC very briefly. They attended an organizational meeting and joined, but withdrew before ever competing in any sport as a SWC member.

I think it's way past time now, but when the split occurred I thought it would be a neat idea to have gotten all the members of the SWC together for a Border Olympics style spring sports extravaganza--baseball tournament, track meet, tennis tournament, golf tournament. Compete for the "SWC Championship" in all those sports, including retaining any of the old trophies. I think you could have gotten a strong corporate sponsor--Dr.Pepper, perhaps--and given the quality, particularly baseball, probably gotten at least parts of it on ESPN. And I'd have invited OU, Okie State, Arkansas, LSU, and even Phillips (before it closed in 1998) and Southwestern. Can you imagine what a thrill it would have been for the Philips and Southwestern kids to compete on ESPN, even if they lost?

I think TexasU would have tried to dominate and dictate to everyone else how it should be done--it's in their DNA--and eventually that would have driven others away. But I still think it would have been fun to try, and with the proper sponsorship it could have worked.

I guess this means were an independent for a year, didn't like it.

Yup, that would have been really fun. But the ill-will has only gotten worse and, you're right, DeLoss Dodds would have made it miserable for everyone.

There are no Threshers online from the Fall of 1918. But the next one (Vol. 4, No. 1 on Feb. 6, 1919 - https://scholarship.rice.edu/bitstream/h...sequence=1) contained a summary of the 1918 football season, including this:

Quote:The Owls battled under adverse conditions throughout the season. In the first place, the squad was greatly weakened by the absence of some of its choice members who were called away by military service. Secondly, Rice in every instance met teams that outweighed her greatly. It is to her credit that she broke even in her two intercollegiate games, Texas defeating her 14 to 0 and S. M. U. succumbing to her with the score of 13 to 0.

Although Rice lost all of her games with the military teams, it must not be forgotten that the Owls were running up against elevens composed of men of exceptional football ability, of which there was a vast number in the army and from which each team was picked. For example, when Rice met Kelly Fieid, Shirley Brick, one of our own great men, was in the line-up against us and contributed no small part to the victory.

Bell, who led the team as captain for the '18 season, was our main veteran. There were others such as Heath, McFarland and Pollard. Most of the remainder were freshmen, because the upper classes were almost denuded by members leaving for the army and other military branches.

Also, Rice's former coach, Philip Arbuckle, was Camp Logan's coach. He returned to Rice after the war.

The Thresher article concluded: "(John) Anderson was from Knox College, an excellent coach and a fine fellow. However, all are certainly glad to see Arbuckle at the head of athletics once more, and all look forward to the coming football season with high hopes."

The 1919 Owls went 8-1!!

Since it's their anniversary year, let's invite their great-great-grandchildren for a game (to honor them).

I think that is a wonderful idea.

I would like your opinion on another opportunity to honor children and grandchildren. Kern Tips (former radio voice of the SWC and nationally-recognized sportscaster, for those who don't know) was a Rice alum. I would like to see him considered for the Honorary "R" person posthumously.

Nice! In addition to the service academies (Army-8 games on CBSSN, Navy-6 and Air Force-5) Rice and five Western U.S. teams have 4 televised games. (The others are Boise State, UNLV, San Diego State, Fresno State and San Jose State.)

Hopefully we see a more competitive product on the field and can hang with conference opponents. Just don't see a win coming. Not even at UTEP or UTSA. Maybe in year three or we could see Bloom taking an O-Line job in the NFL to get out of Houston.

Just dropping by to say that you guys have an AWESOME home schedule this season! As a Virginia Tech Hokies fan, even if I don't necessarily envy you the exact teams the Owls are playing, I can truly appreciate the quality of that home slate!

I was inspired to write about it on my ACCFootballRx blog

This is the gist of what I wrote:

Quote:As a Hokies fan, I'm a little jealous of the Rice Owls' home schedule...

Both teams play Wake Forest at home. Virginia Tech hosts Old Dominion; Rices hosts Marshall. True, VT gets more P5 opponents (4 vs. 3), but they are not all equal... in addition to Wake Forest, the Hokies get Duke, UNC and Pitt, while the Owls get Texas and Baylor. True, Rice fans have to drive across town to see the Texas game, but come on! And to make up for the lack of a 4th P5 opponent, Rice plays a 4th G5 - VT plays 2 FCS teams (yuck!)

Hats off to Rice on putting together such an outstanding 2019 football schedule.

(Anyway, sorry for the intrusion... carry on!)

Our schedule is half good.

By that I don’t mean half the opponents are good.

I mean that in all of our games only half the teams are good.

With the rebuild we’re probably a year or two away from really being worthy of playing such a schedule.

30 minutes? That's a brisk pace in Houston heat and humidity. Goggle maps shows it as a 54 minute hike (2.9 miles). But it may very well be quicker to walk than drive on game day including dealing with parking.
