Rice leads the series 16-5. We played every year from 1913-1930, but only three of those were SWC contests.

Its early years saw fluctuation in membership; Southwestern (a comparatively smaller school) dropped out of the conference in 1916, and Southern Methodist University (SMU) joined in 1918; Texas Christian University (TCU) became a member in 1923. Rice University left the conference in 1916, only to re-join in 1918.

Phillips University was a conference member for one year (1920). Oklahoma left in 1919 to join the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association (later known as the Big Eight Conference), and was followed by Oklahoma A&M in 1925. However, the series between Texas and Oklahoma would continue as a non-conference matchup in the annual Red River Rivalry game held in Dallas. From 1925 until 1991, the University of Arkansas would be the only conference member not located within the state of Texas.

IIRC, LSU was technically also a member of the SWC very briefly. They attended an organizational meeting and joined, but withdrew before ever competing in any sport as a SWC member.

I think it's way past time now, but when the split occurred I thought it would be a neat idea to have gotten all the members of the SWC together for a Border Olympics style spring sports extravaganza--baseball tournament, track meet, tennis tournament, golf tournament. Compete for the "SWC Championship" in all those sports, including retaining any of the old trophies. I think you could have gotten a strong corporate sponsor--Dr.Pepper, perhaps--and given the quality, particularly baseball, probably gotten at least parts of it on ESPN. And I'd have invited OU, Okie State, Arkansas, LSU, and even Phillips (before it closed in 1998) and Southwestern. Can you imagine what a thrill it would have been for the Philips and Southwestern kids to compete on ESPN, even if they lost?

I think TexasU would have tried to dominate and dictate to everyone else how it should be done--it's in their DNA--and eventually that would have driven others away. But I still think it would have been fun to try, and with the proper sponsorship it could have worked.

Yup, that would have been really fun. But the ill-will has only gotten worse and, you're right, DeLoss Dodds would have made it miserable for everyone.

I think that is a wonderful idea.

I would like your opinion on another opportunity to honor children and grandchildren. Kern Tips (former radio voice of the SWC and nationally-recognized sportscaster, for those who don't know) was a Rice alum. I would like to see him considered for the Honorary "R" person posthumously.

Nice! In addition to the service academies (Army-8 games on CBSSN, Navy-6 and Air Force-5) Rice and five Western U.S. teams have 4 televised games. (The others are Boise State, UNLV, San Diego State, Fresno State and San Jose State.)

Just dropping by to say that you guys have an AWESOME home schedule this season! As a Virginia Tech Hokies fan, even if I don't necessarily envy you the exact teams the Owls are playing, I can truly appreciate the quality of that home slate!

Our schedule is half good.

By that I don’t mean half the opponents are good.

I mean that in all of our games only half the teams are good.

With the rebuild we’re probably a year or two away from really being worthy of playing such a schedule.

30 minutes? That's a brisk pace in Houston heat and humidity. Goggle maps shows it as a 54 minute hike (2.9 miles). But it may very well be quicker to walk than drive on game day including dealing with parking.
