Patrick Johnson apparently hasn't been paying attention to the recruits we have signed because I don't think either of those guys were our top targets. We've been out of the PG market for weeks. We signed 2 JUCO PG's in the fall, both are highly ranked JUCO's one #7 overall nationally on 247 who will only be a sophomore and the other #36 who was at rotation player at Virginia Tech before JUCO's. We also got a 6-5 freshman PG that averaged 37ppg 9rpg in high school that was a silent commit for weeks per 247.

We had no more room for Phillips and he averaged 16ppg, 3rpg, 3apg shooting 33% on a low volume of 3's honestly I don't think he is as good. Pretty similar story on the wings we signed as well as well. I really don't know who P. Johnson want us to not sign to get Dodd or Phillips.

We've been hearing about these awesome recruits for years, yet, nothing but more L's

I'm more worried about Dooley's dumba$$ rotations after last year than I am the recruiting. He's seemingly righted the ship on recruiting that is more inline with what I expected. Rotations and retention have pretty much been our biggest issues over the years. It's not that we haven't had talent, we leave it on the bench or it leaves. You're a Syracuse fan I believe, just look at Elijah Hughes. Dude was sitting on our bench now he's Syracuse 2nd best player.

BTW I've been following your recruiting a little this spring, how hot is McGrath's seat anyway. Can he even afford wait on freshman like Phillips and Dodd? I would have expected his seat to be very warm by this point and for him to do more of what we are doing running players off and JUCOing it up or at least getting older prep school guys. He must feel pretty safe.

This thread is to discuss UNCW recruiting. We’re not derailing this thread into a McGrath hot seat or ECU pissing match. So far you’re fine, but keep it on topic or find another thread.

This class already has one grad transfer and a JUCO player, and are waiting on a decision from another grad transfer big. CB has done a good job building a team that has the talent to compete in the top half of the conference next season, and be a conference contender going forward. Whether that actually happens will determine his fate.

Does that even replace Cylla though, much less Cacock. If I were McGrath I wouldn't feel comfortable until I cut some of those players that weren't playing and had 5 or 6 of those JUCO's or grad transfers. The high school freshman you signed may be good but unless they are really good next year they might have to be good for the next coach or just transfer if he gets fired anyway. He doesn't seem to have a lot of urgency.

Cylla was a flop for most of us... While I wish him well at Arkansas, he won't be missed. Sims will replace him in the starting lineup and will take a big step in his sophomore season. He started to show his true potential near the end of the season. 4 of our 5 starters were on the roster last season, the need to completely overhaul the roster like you're talking about isn't necessary. He just needs to start winning games with the talent he has...

You and apparently McGrath are a lot more confidence than I would be. Cacock is as massive a loss in what he gave you as any team will ever have to replace just to seemingly tread water where you were last year. You might need 2 or 3 players just to make up his singular value. I wouldn't feel to confident in bench players from last year or some high school freshman to replace all that in the aggregate. Just seems like he would want to get some more established immediate help if his job was on the line and enough of that type of player to be sure at least a couple would hit. Cylla was at worst a slightly above average player who had a lot of experience too, I would have been happy if we signed him either out of high school or leaving UNCW.

I'm not gonna sit here and debate you on how Cacok can be replaced... because he can't be. No matter how you angle it, it's a stupid debate because he just can't be... However, there is hope with Toews, Gadsden, Estime, and Sims returning. If you watched UNCW basketball last year, you would understand that. With the CAA wide open next year, UNCW has the talent to compete. I'm not saying CB can get it done, I'm just saying he has the talent to get it done.

Jonesing, enough. If you want to debate team talent and McGrath’s potential success/failure... do it on another thread or create a pissing match thread in the Bird Droppings forum. Anymore and I’m going to consider this trolling and you’ll be dealt with accordingly. This is our recruiting thread and it will stay that way.

Don't forget about Linnsen. Big man from Valparaiso with three years left. Sitting out last year should have helped him develop more as a big man. He's no Cacok, but word is he is very strong.

Apparently last week the group of Toews, Sims, Estime, Gadsen and Linssen scrimmaged vs Cacock, Talley, Taylor, Fornes and Cylla and beat them.

Interesting. New Hawks vs Old Hawks. I’d love to see the Talley vs Toews matchup.

If it's half court Toews loses that matchup. Full court Talley would get bullied to the hoop.

Talley is a tough hombre in the half court. I liked to refer to him as a closer because he could hit that runner, get fouled or even hit tough contested J's. Big heart. It's good that Kai can play against him.

Talley was a beast, but he really really stepped it up his junior and senior year. Honestly, Kai’s freshman year to me looked a lot like Jordan’s junior year (aside from scoring). Talley was great, but IMO, Kai could end up being even better by the time he’s done. Both are extremely talented PGs.

Talley had a good freshman year too. He closed many a game for the Hawks. Tough competitor.

Absolutely. Talley was the man. It’s not a slight against Talley, but as a true PG Toews has a better ceiling.
