Hollywood actors, CEOs and coaches charged in nationwide college admissions cheating
College coaches and other high profile people have been charged in a sweeping admissions bribery case unsealed in federal court.

NBC and ABC report that actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Laughlin are among at least 40 people charged in the case.

Laughlin is best known for her role in “Full House” and Huffman for her role in “Desperate Housewives.”

The racketeering conspiracy charges unveiled Tuesday were brought against the coaches at schools including Wake Forest University, Georgetown and the University of Southern California.

Authorities say the coaches accepted bribes in exchange for admitting students as athletes, regardless of their ability.

Prosecutors say parents paid an admissions consultant $25 million from 2011 through Feb. 2019 to bribe coaches and administrators to label their children as recruited athletes to boost their chances of getting into schools.

Prosecutors allege that fake athletic profiles were also made to make students look like strong high school athletes when they actually weren't.

William H. Macy is the husband of Huffman. Why he isn't being named surprises me. Read what he had to say about his daughter and college. Being famous means it is ok to cheat I guess.

It is possible Macy knew or maybe his wife did most of the heavy lifting. I read that she was caught detailing payoffs and such on the phone. Can't wait to see the full list of those indicted.

Between this and the basketball scandal college sports is starting to get a "bad smell" to it....

Might be time for a house cleaning at some places.

Here's the reality. If you offer enough money, you can get in anywhere.

I'm surprised they are going this route instead of straight to the donor relations office.

I was going to say. Why did they make this so complicated? You can get your kid into any school you want with a big enough donation

33 parents, 4 SAT administrators, 9 coaches, 2 university administrators, and a couple of people running the scam company have been charged.

I thought you guys said rich people got there by merit alone? But, seriously, anyone surprised by rich people doing all they can do so they can brag about their kid at parties?

I’m not. They were likely trying to escape the reality of the perception they bought their kids’ into universities instead of the kids earning it like the rest of us. Would’ve been to easy for a mosey reporter to identify donor money with the family.

Likewise, we all know a certain Obama child who certainly didn’t get into Harvard based on academics or sports.

It probably costs less to do it this way and it doesn't raise any red flags with a large donation and at the same time have the son or daughter gain admission. In this case there were people submitting bogus SAT scores.

Dersh said the distinction was the super rich vs the very rich. The super rich, you're right, you buy ("donate") a building and you're in.

The very rich "only" have a few million to spend, so they chose this route.

Someone was talking at one of my kid's schools about 7 or 8 years ago and bought his daughter into an eastern school (BC or BU). But made the donation anonymous so the daughter wouldn't know. Don't remember the figures he quoted for certain, but I think he said UVA was 100k. He didn't quote a figure on Harvard, but said he knew people who did it. This guy was a well known public businessman, so its not like some guy off the street making stuff up.

Harvard has already admitted that grades and test scores don't matter anymore. Hence david hogg. Rejected from UC-Santa Cruz, accepted at Harvard.

Now kids believe that acquiring a twitter following by regurgitating alt-left propaganda is how you get ahead.

You think any school in America would turn down a former President's kid?

She'd be legacy even without Obama being president.

Bribes were paid and frauds committed to gain admission for students to colleges such as Boston University, Yale University, Boston College, Northeastern University, Georgetown University, the University of Southern California, the University of California San Diego, the University of California Los Angeles, Wake Forest University, Stanford University and the University of Texas at Austin.

The government called William “Rick” Singer, 58, of Newport Beach, California, the mastermind of the scheme. He ran a college counseling and preparation business called The Edge College and Career Network LLC, which was known as The Key, and the nonprofit Key Worldwide Foundation, which the government says was nothing more than a sham organization that laundered the millions Singer’s company took in. Singer, who cooperated with federal agents during the investigation, is expected to plead guilty Tuesday to racketeering conspiracy, money laundering and other crimes.

I suspect Huffman, Loughlin and others will all wind up coping a deal (pay a fine, maybe a little community service) and testifying against Singer. He's the one they want here.

RE: Hollywood actors, CEOs and coaches charged in nationwide college admissions cheating
I posted this on the Rice board already, but I'll copy it again here.

The thing I don't get about this story is quite honestly, rich and powerful families have been getting their children into universities they probably don't belong in for hundreds of years. As many of you know, I went to UCLA, and when I was there in the 80's, there were a ton of kids of celebrities attending UCLA. Some were probably good enough to get in on their own academically, but some were definitely only there because of their famous parents. And it was even more prevalent at USC.

So here's the part I don't get. Do these schools no longer admit celebrities kids as regular students anymore merely because of their parents wealth and fame? Why couldn't the kids mentioned in these stories just be admitted as regular students, and not have to be associated with the athletic departments?
