Hate to point this out but 100 years ago it wasn't uncommon at all for first cousins to marry. I bet if you did a genealogical search of your own ancestors you'll see that your family trees have more crossed branches than you might have thought. The truth was the only women near your own age within a reasonable distance of where you lived probably were all related to you in some measure. You either courted a cousin or you did without.

You only share 7.31-13.8% DNA with your first cousins. The real danger of cousin marriage is when you marry your cousin but your common grandparents were also first cousins. This can result in multiplying the common DNA and thus risk more chances of birth defects and other recessive traits.

I've got a few first cousins I'd tap . Growing up in a household with 4 boys who had a HUGE extended family of female cousins one couldn't help but fantasize at times.

True story, I signed up on ancestry.com after my daughter told me about a family tree she'd come across compiled by some distant cousin in Arkansas. She called the woman who told her in no uncertain terms that she wanted nothing to do with any of the people whose names were included and to not bother ever calling back, click.
My daughter sent me the link to the file this woman had created and it was titled "One Fu**ed Up Family Tree. LOL. It seems a lot of my distant relatives were from Arkansas and Missouri and the branches were few.

I have to say that 49r is right.. I've got two names in my family tree that come up 4 times within 3 generations. (and there was documentation enclosed to prove it was the same couple).

When I deployed to Florida in 98 for the wild fires the SC, MS, and Arkansas crews ended up together. One of the Arkansas crews had two guys who told us "We ended up marrying cousins. Not our cousins like usually happens in Arkansas, our wives are cousins. I'm from Texas and he's from Missouri so we aren't into that." LOL
