Artist: del Amitri
Album: del Amitri
Song: "Deceive Yourself (In Ignorant Heaven)"
1985 Chrysalis Records
A Scottish alternative rock band, formed in Glasgow in 1980. Del Amitri's founding member and main songwriter, Justin Currie, explained that the band's name "was invented to be meaningless – basically a corruption of the Greek name 'Dimitri'." Later, in 2018, Currie clarified that 'Del Amitri' is a bastardisation of the name of a film producer who appeared in the closing credits of a film he saw in 1979 – "probably Dimitri-something, but we couldn't remember... so eventually through osmosis or maybe Chinese Whispers 'Dimitri' became 'Del Amitri'."
"Deceive Yourself (In Ignorant Heaven)"
The World
and the surrounding stars
but not an eclipse of the sky nor a colliding car
Not a shotgun blast nor a shooting star
will bring her back from her stubborn tower.
It's a kind of madness, it's a kind of sin
To live in the state of mind I've been living in
Her face imprinted on my sight
Her voice resounding in my skull at night.
If there is a living goddess on Earth
It must be her from the heaven highlife
It takes this girl to realise what you're worth
and I'm worth nothing it she's worth more than my life.
But there's more that me than simple devotion
I won't just crawl at her feet and utter a plea
And if she refused I wouldn't walk into the ocean
Just because my world was left all out at sea.
So it was in this cafe when we eventually met
And I wished I had sunglasses and smoked cigarettes
The World
and the surrounding stars
When over the table and two cups of tea
She told me she felt the same way about me.
And not an eclipse of the sky nor a colliding car
could have shaken our attention from each other's face
As we both jump down from our stubborn towers
We jump into the ignorant heaven that is the lovers place.

RIP Mark Hollis (of Talk Talk). I used to love this song (and Talk Talk was another great song by them).
Speaking of the latter song, has there ever been another rock & roll group who had a hit song with the exact same name as their group?
ETA - just looked it up, the most obvious example of that would be the song Bad Company by the group Bad Company
Good pick, FBO. Mark Hollis iswas a great songwriter, though often underappreciated for his talents. When I'm in a moody mood, I can put on one of his records and just chill. So sorry to hear of his early passing. I have many of his recordings.
Quote:"Sadly it's true," Keith Aspden said. "Mark has died after a short illness from which he never recovered."
Talk Talk achieved mainstream success with such hits as It's My Life and Such a Shame, but became increasingly insular and experimental over time.
After releasing a solo album in 1998, Hollis left music behind and removed himself from public view.
When asked about the decision, he said: "I choose for my family. Maybe others are capable of doing it, but I can't go on tour and be a good dad at the same time."
His final release was a solo album, also called Mark Hollis, in 1998.

Funny, Hog, I was listening to this the other morning while working out and thought about posting it. From the earlier album before he really blew up as an (alleged) adult and changed his natural looks.
Real piano, real electric guitars, real bass guitar, real drums, real horns. Even real spoons on bottles (courtesy of Michael and his siblings). Oh, and his real voice. No auto-tune. Recorded when he was about 20 years old. Oh, and he wrote it and produced it, too.
