Gardner/Yetna discussion

Heading into February, Gardner and Yetna both have been named the AAC Freshman of the week 3 times and also shared one week as co-freshmen of the week. I definitely don't think it's clear who's going to win that for the year, and don't rule out Tyler Harris or Nate Hinton making a run at it, either. The conference really does have some nice new blood this year...

Gardener has been freshman of the week 4 times. He is two away from Dedric Lawson record of 6.

Both Yetna and Gardner have been named 4 times (kind of my point). One time was when they both shared the honor.

Yetna has a lot of size and athleticism going for him. Would love to have him on the Pirates.

Gardner is undersized but has a terrific motor, and just flat out wants it.

18.9/9.4/1.3
13.2/10.1/1.1

Both are good players but there’s a clear choice.

at this point in the season it is..2 coaches have already said whod they think it is (*obviously insinuating if it was today)

3 notes:
1) it isnt who you want it to be
2) the coaches are the ones who vote for it
3) i doubt the coaches who gave their opinion about it just happen to be the anomaly

still alot of season left

Is Yetna who's a great player in my opinion a true freshman or a redshirt freshman?

redshirt, his ameturism was in question last year, so he was redshirted in precaution till that situation was cleared

LOL Coach P...seriously. Is there any AAC stat you DON'T know? I couldn't name one player on ECU (or 80% of the AAC for that matter) and here you are giving details. Unreal.

He's worth the price of admission...Coach P ladies and gentlemen.

I think Yetna is the better all around player. Gardner just has higher usage because he has far less talent around him. Both are great assets to developing programs.

Gardner’s usage rate is marginally higher. His defensive rating is also 10 whole points higher than Yetna’s. That’s a lot.

Point is, I don't think the choice is all that clear. Here are a couple of other numbers for you:

14-6 vs. 8-11
28/13/2 vs. 15/15/1

I'm not saying Gardner won't be selected, but in my opinion, it's now Yetna's award to lose.

RE: Gardner/Yetna discussion
Here is the way I look at it:

1) Would love to see Yetna win it...but I am biased.
2) Would not be surprised if Gardner wins it....and I would be disappointed

However, I think it is great news for the AAC that two formerly moribund programs are showing signs of having sustainable success.

I just hope both kids stay healthy as they are 100% all out effort machines.

One thing to note:

If Yetna Stays at USF all 4 years, he will be almost 25 years old at time of graduation.

He is 21.4 which makes him one of the oldest freshman in the country.

That said, I cannot find anywhere on the internet how old Jayden Gardner is... Its not on ECU website, not on 247, its missing on kenpom. Is Jayden an old freshman too because their seems to be a lot of work being done to not conceal his age...

RE: Gardner/Yetna discussion
Gonna throw a few stats around. Starting with Gardner, Yetna, and Hinton's conference games stat lines.

Gardner: 32.1 MP, .463 FG%, 10.6 REB, 1.4 AST, 1.0 STL, 0.7 BLK, 2.4 TOV 18.9 PTS.
Hinton: 19.5 MP, .481 FG%, 5.3 REB, 1.4 AST, 1.3 STL, .03 BLK, 1.4 TOV, 10.4 PTS.
Yetna: 32.1 MP, .587 FG%, 8.8 REB, 1.1 AST, 0.6 STL, 0.6 BLK, 2.3 TOV, 15.3 PTS.

In addition to those traditional stats I'll add in a few advanced stats from their conference play.

Gardner: 25.9 PER, .536 TS%, 30.8 USG%, 0.6 OWS, 0.1 DWS, 0.7 WS, .123 WS/40
Hinton: 28.2 PER, .636 TS%, 24.2 USG%, 0.6 OWS, 0.4 DWS, 1.0 WS, .263 WS/40
Yetna: 23.1 PER, .656 TS%, 20.7 USG%, 0.8 OWS, 0.5 DWS, 1.3 WS, .206 WS/40

I'm not going to make any predictions on whats going to happen, just want to say that all three schools have some pretty special talents.

He graduated high school in 2018

https://www.highschoolot.com/jayden-gard.../17409539/

so it's pretty much a given that he's no more than 20 (would depend on whether his parents "redshirted" him as a kid (a practice far too common these days) and much more likely to be 18 or 19.
