RE: It sounds like the AAC is asking schools to sign a grant of rights.
I don't mind signing it as long as the other major teams in our league also sign it. The P5 leagues would be losing all of there expansion teams if we all signed it. So the next thing the major conferences would do would be to pluck the best teams from the Big12. The remaining teams would join our league at that time - maybe making us a new P5 league..

So that it expires about the same time the Big 12 Grant of Rights does? Doubt that's the offer.
5 years seems reasonable, besides, I wouldn't sign a TV deal longer than that anyway. We stand a good chance to grow past the $10MM mark by then, and we would leave too much money on the table in years 6-10.
But as far as I can see an AAC five-year grant of rights doesn't serve much purpose when it comes to keeping the conference together once the Big 12 breaks up, if it does, after the expiration of its own Grant of Rights. For the AAC Grant rights to make sense in my opinion you would have to extend beyond the expiration of the Big 12 grant of rights.
well, of course. Sure it is the best for the AAC but might not be the best for Memphis. Anything over 5 years and they can go take a hike. It isn't like they are going to give us 40mil a year just because. They are doing what is in their best interest, we have to do what is in our best interest.

Well, iirc there is still BYU and some of the west coast midmajors, but yes, the bulk of the top candidates are in the AAC. Perhaps BYU is content with & committed to its independence, and the rest don't offer enough, although marketwise, SDSU, UNLV, Colorado State, might get at least a due diligence glance...
But we can't control outside our conference. At minimum, the other GOR offerees must sign. All or not us.
Also, off topic, but is our paltry enrollment hurting us? The 4 most often mentioned programs all have at least twice our student population. To their detriment, UCF's wiki endowment is terrible compared to their enrollment, about the same as us with thrice the enrollment. I hope we improve in all factors and areas that can be construed as deficiencies. I do believe we have been headed in the right direction. We need to continue and accelerate that progress.

I know it was over 20K several years ago BEFORE we took over Lambuth. I don't know what it is now, but I know it's higher than it was.

Our enrollment could be higher, sure, but it isn't paltry.
And no, Lipman is no longer with the University. She is one of five justices sitting on the US District Court for Western Tennessee.

Fall 2017 enrollment: 21,521
https://www.memphis.edu/about/facts.php
Enrollment has hovered around 20k pretty much for this entire century.
I do wonder what UCF brings to the Big 12. Yes, I know their FB is good, BUT remember not so long ago they were 0-12. They would be 4th best in the state in terms of followers (UF, FSU, Miami). I suppose some more Florida exposure for Big 12 schools for recruiting and they do have potential....but that 'ceiling' is still hampered by the fact that UF,FSU and Miami all have a bigger piece of the pie in the Florida market.

A Big 12 without UT and Oklahoma is done. DOA.
A 'P5' conference with
Okstate/Kansas/Kansas State/TTech/Baylor/WestVirginia/TCU/Iowa State and whatever AAC gets invited would be met with a collect YAWN from the media and those negotiating TV rights. It would make a nice, little BB conference, not unlike the Big East currently is. It would be 'part' of the CFP, but I highly doubt that the conference would be getting the big $$$'s to keep up with the P4.

There's nothing nice or little about Big East basketball compared to the other power conferences.

I agree, but in terms of football, the AAC actually won a title with UCONN awhile back and it still makes virtually no difference in terms of the money or prestige of a P5 conference.

However, A conference with those teams plus the top AAC teams is still a better conference than the AAC. and there really is no debate to it. The bottom part of the AAC is not good. Uconn, ECU, Tulsa, SMU, are bad. Moving into a situation where you play the Big12 leftovers IS a more credible football schedule and a more attractive Basketball schedule, every day of the week. The GOR isnt worth signing if it kills opportunity in a few years in my opinion.

Trust me, I would take that conference over the current AAC any day of the week. This issue isn't whether it is a better conference (it is), but whether it would still garner P5 money, tv contracts and bowl tie-ins.
