Any idea why the coaches got into it at midfield at the end?

Wasn’t pretty on too many accounts but it is a win.

Looked like Candle and Coach Neu had words at the end of the game? Maybe about the long pass for that last score?

We noticed that too, looks like Candle said “scoreboard” to end the conversation... 03-nutkick

I think the offense runs better with Peters despite his three interceptions tonight.

I do think Mitch could still have a place in this offense going forward though...sometimes having a QB who can run well gives you a change of pace at a crucial time in a game. And no question Mitch can run—through 6 games he was our leading rusher. I think if he’s healthy we see him in certain situations against NIU.

Don’t disagree, but don’t think we need MG to be our leading rusher. We’ve got plenty of talent to spread the ball around.

Agree. Every time he takes off our 3 stud RB's and 3 Stud WR's just become extra blockers. Let the skill guys do their jobs. Peters runs the offense better, but Mitch is the better athlete. He just needs to stay healthy.

Maybe because instead of running out the clock against a badly depleted team we throw a bomb to run up the score? Just a thought. Dumb move. Not “we’re driving for an obvious score to go up at least 31-7 so let’s have our wide receiver throw a pass” dumb, but pretty dumb.

Or the 30 second TO with 38 seconds left to play when you're down by 32? We should have beat them worse than we did.

Well, Ball State was really bad tonight. I feel like we kind of played down to them, though, including some ghastly play calling at times. We let them hang around too long and are really fortunate they were too sloppy to get back into it. The only thing I can think of with the four picks is the coaches must figure they just have to let him fling it and learn from it. While Peters' stats look pretty good, Bruce said he was sure the coaches would be telling him, "You can't throw four picks. You just can't." Not sure what consequences there could be, though--aside from losing a game. Can't throw four away next week, that's for sure.

RE: Ball State at Toledo game thread
On the positives:
-The top two tacklers last night were..... linebackers!
- The running game is looking better and better. Koback and Thompson with strong outings.
- The O-line is starting to mash defenders into the turf.
- Peters was hitting open primary targets when they were open.
- A trend that seems to happen late in the season, Toledo finding its tight end, creating more offensive options.

On the downside:
-Peters heaving prayers at receivers who are obviously covered. That is a big game killer waiting to happen. Hopefully he learns from them, because he is our only QB option going into next week.
- Calling a trick play, when your offense is in control of a long drive, resulting in a silly interception. Looks like grade school football.

RE: Ball State at Toledo game thread
Peters threw only four passes that were incomplete, so he’s obviously throwing a catchable ball. Thompson caught it, Rosincaught it, Seymour caught it, the Johnson’s caught it, a lot of Ball State defenders caught it....

Agree with pretty much agree with all you say. However, this apparent trend of the O-line and overall D playing better in mid-late October (and hopefully November) goes against their recent history so I have to wonder if last night's improved efforts in running the ball and on D were a function of the Rockets actually improving as the season goes on (which is against the tendencies shown in recent years) or just a function of playing an injury riddled (and not very good) Ball State squad. Still this is the second game in a row where the Rockets have a convincing win. I was more impressed by the Western win because going into that game I figured the possibility of a loss was high -----anyway next week should tell a lot.

My (admittedly amateur) observation is Peters shows good potential at QB but my criticism is that (it seems to me) he tends to lock on his primary receiver and is slow to go thru his progressions (if at all). I think this is factor in of his interceptions, although one last night was clearly on the receiver. Hopefully this game was a good learning experience for him------it is always nice to be learning and winning at the same time. Anyway 8-4 is still a possibility and, while not a lock, 7-5 is looking very good at the moment---either way not a bad season on paper (but IMO aided by this being somewhat of a down year for the MAC).

Anyway, GREAT WEATHER! The game was perfectly fit in between major rains with warm temperatures and no wind----I don't remember any better conditions at any home game in late October-early November (but of course there is lot that I don't remember these days).

Neu was frustrated that Toledo was still running a deep post route, up 25 and with 1:23 to play.

Im ok with how the end transpired. 3rd down. They're still calling timeouts. You're free to throw the ball.

100% agree. If he is calling TO's, he is still trying to compete and so should we. Don't call a TO and more than likely we call a running play or two and the clock runs out.
