Great article with lots of great quotes and insights. LOVE all the focus on defense and the fact that Tony says some of the young guys have some bulldog in them. We need that in a bad way. How about Paul comparing Chase already to Tarpey on the D end.
I think Chase is a starter by the time conference play rolls around in full swing. I believe we have a better all around balanced team with Chase bringing D and athleticism/intensity to start the game and Paul bringing instant offense off the bench.
I also really think Luke is gonna surprise many people. With all the talent around him, we need him to do what he does best, compete hard and set the tone, lead, do the little things to help us win, run the team, play strong, good Hardnose D, be a threat to hit the open 3. We need him to be the best Luke he can be and not try to be David. They are such different players. Last year’s team needed David to drive and carry the O, this year’s team and going forward need a guy with Luke’s skill set on both ends.
Gonna be a fun year and we are entering into a fun new era and chapter in Tribe b-ball. Anyone have any insight on how healthy Pierce is? Seems to be practicing but can’t tell if he is full go or not.
Go Tribe!

If Luke indeed becomes an outside shooting threat, then we're good to go.
With the new blood, maybe we will add a full court defensive pressure dimension that we have never had.

One way to use depth is to press and constantly sub to wear down opponents. I’m not sure that we’re there yet, but it would be a different look for us. We know Tony can coach that style.

I know people killed me for talking about a 10 deep rotation earlier this year, but that's what we are going to have.

yep; we are going to have more people capable of playing in the rotation and Tony and staff's toughest job this year might be finding the right combination of players at the right times each game because it'll probably be different each game and there are a lot more viable options this year who all bring a little something different.
I just hope team chemistry is strong and all buy into playing whatever role is best for the team to win on a given night and I think they/we will. Last year's team really set the foundation for that which is huge.
Gonna be a fun ride.

Agree that it is going to be a fun ride.
Chemistry is so important as was so sharply contrasted over the last couple of years.

Depth, alone, will make us a better team this season. Simply because there was none last season. Even if none of the returners has gotten better, which I think is totally unrealistic, we would be better, because of fresher legs towards the end of games.
I'm looking forward to it.

I hear where you're coming from, but I'm still concerned about who will fill the PG/floor general duties. Someone steps up there, and I think we'll be improved. Tough shoes to fill, though.

RE: 2018-19 MBB
The Tribe will miss Cohn and Burchfield especially, but there is always opportunity for someone to step up and fill the void. While I am cautiously excited about this season, I am concerned about our opponents and the CAA schedule. Ending the regular season with 5 of 7 on the road is brutal. Northeastern, COC, Hofstra, UNCW and perhaps JMU look to be formidable. Finding a way to end up at or near the top of the conference might be even tougher than last season. The nonconference schedule should provide opportunities for multiple excellent tests prior to conference play. Other than William Peace during the exam period, there really are no easy opponents this season in the nonconference schedule. Plus, the Tribe will see some significantly different styles to test the tempo, ballhandling, defense, and lineups. The most exciting thing is that there is potential for us to be able to play more aggressively because there will be depth at every position(except perhaps for Nathan). I love the nonconference schedule, but I am less than thrilled with the CAA schedule. We have too many early home games again where the students aren't in Williamsburg and too many road games late. At least there could be depth to survive the tough road trips. The Northern trip 2/7 and 2/9 looms large again.
I know there is no Charter weekend game, but are there any plans to make any of the home games a Gold Rush Weekend?
Finally, if chemistry is an issue this season, the Tribe has the relatively new multi-million dollar Science Center it can use for motivation. I feel confident that a lecture and memorable experiment could be arranged to emphasize the importance of good chemistry. I cannot imagine anything more like W&M than to conduct such an experiment. It is a very impressive place, far more impressive than Millington or Rogers was. If the Tribe has the right chemistry this season, we might all see some memorable experiments in Kaplan Arena.

We’ve got depth in the paint, more fouls to give down low. At the risk of repeating myself, Loewe will be a prototypical point. He’s a big strong leader! He needs a backup.

Looks like we have a scrimmage next Sunday at the Kap vs. UMBC........ Have no idea if the public is invited.

Usually these "secret scrimmages" are not open to the public.

Seems weird to schedule during homecoming weekend when everyone will be in town.

RE: 2018-19 MBB
Third scrimmage I attended recently confirms many of the thoughts evinced on this board recently.
Some quick observations of the practice I witnessed earlier this week
*The freshmen as a group are all athletes and perhaps the best recruiting class as a group of five in memory.
*Owens and Audrige are going to play..,alot. Owens is silky smooth in all facets; he glides across the court with grace and athleticism. Good, very good shooter, sees the entire court, good passer and dribbler and plays defense. He is going to play many minutes. Audrige is tough, physical and plays with a chip on his shoulder...does lots of things well. Both these guys play defense.
*Harvey is no 6'9" stuff...he is mobile, athletic, and has some moves. Has much to learn and needs some bulk and muscle development, but is going to provide Nathan with some rest during games.
*Knight looks unstoppable...barring injury he is set for one of the great W&M centers' season. Made some remarkable thunder dunks that rattled all of Kaplan Arena.
*Pierce scrimmaged and appears set to reclaim full participation.
*The walkons are an upgrade from the past. The 6'6" transfer from a walkon at Alabama is built like a brick oven, moves well, and, in my opinion, may play some.

Jeff Goodman tweets:
“Multiple coaches told @WatchStadium they have filed transfer waivers recently after seeing that NCAA has become so lenient in this regard. Many feel NCAA concerned about potential lawsuits, reverting back to when granted nearly all waiver requests.”
This is in response to Heron being allowed to play immediately for St. John’s. Would this have any bearing on Van Vliet’s case? The pipe dream continues.

It could, but it comes back to does he even want an extra year in lieu of making money playing professionally in Europe?
I haven't heard anything about perusing a graduate degree.

I may have missed any discussion or comment on this - though I noticed the Delaware game on 2/2 is now a 4PM game. Has this possibly been timed for Gold Rush?

i would assume that he is already planning on 2 years @ W&M. I took the waiver to be for this season without sitting out in the previous post. If a waiver for this year was obtained, perhaps a waiver for a 6th year could be pursued after the end of the year.
