Tony stated that this team, while only a few practices into it, has shown a lot of energy and competitive spirit. He seems very hopeful.

I haven't heard anything about perusing a graduate degree.
i would assume that he is already planning on 2 years @ W&M. I took the waiver to be for this season without sitting out in the previous post. If a waiver for this year was obtained, perhaps a waiver for a 6th year could be pursued after the end of the year.
Per transfer rules, Van Vliet would have to sit out this year. He is a senior, and will be a RS senior next season. I think the idea was to try to petition and recoup the freshman year that he lost out on at Wisconsin. Still a long shot IMO, but worth a try if Andy is interested.

I understand the transfer rules requiring an athlete to sit out a year, I had interpreted WillaMary08's Post "Jeff Goodman tweets as per the highlighted portion below to be a waiver to play without sitting out, in addition to potentially a 6th year:
“Multiple coaches told @WatchStadium they have filed transfer waivers recently after seeing that NCAA has become so lenient in this regard. Many feel NCAA concerned about potential lawsuits, reverting back to when granted nearly all waiver requests.”
This is in response to Heron being allowed to play immediately for St. John’s. Would this have any bearing on Van Vliet’s case? The pipe dream continues."
Sorry if I misunderstood.

No, I might have misunderstood. Heron is only similar in that he transferred. The underlying reason "to be closer to his ailing mother" seems far fetched but I don't how they could spin a similar hardship for Van Vliet. I guess the underlying point is that the NCAA is allowing immediate play hardships for flimsy reasons- no disrespect meant to Heron's mother.

Thanks for clarifying. I wasn't aware of the hardship aspect. I went back and read an article and get what you're saying. Pipe-dreams sometimes die hard...

I think there are a lot of things to be hopeful about. Any idea what time a Saturday scrimmage would be? We have a lot going on with it being my wife's 25th reunion and also the 25th for my brother, but I am hoping to get over to Kaplan for a few minutes if I can.

I was just hoping the NCAA was being more open to all kinds of requests (like getting Van Vliet’s freshman year back) regardless of any similarity to Heron’s situation.

If proximity to family is what works, Williamsburg is closer to Europe than Madison. :)

RE: 2018-19 MBB
Tribe picked to finish 4th, behind Northeastern, CofC and Hofstra.
Nathan and Justin picked for 2nd team. Do not agree with Brantley getting 1st team over Nathan. Also, don't agree with UD's Eric Carter getting honorable mention over Matt. Both snubs will give incentive.

RE: 2018-19 MBB
Nathan (347 points) was ahead of Brantley (304 points) in 2017-2018 voting, although Brantley might have been higher if he didn't miss 10 games. I would put Nathan ahead, but I'm not surprised Brantley got on the First Team. With scoring and rebounding about the same, Nathan had a big edge in blocks. Nathan had more fouls, but that's okay considering how many more blocks he had. Nathan shot two-pointers much better. Given that Brantley attempted more threes, it's possible his two-pointers had a longer average distance and harder difficulty than Nathan's, but there's no way to know. Nathan had more assists and a better assist/turnover ratio. Brantley was better at shooting three-pointers, free throws, and steals.
Matt was a great shooter, but didn't contribute many rebounds, assists, steals, or blocked shots. His field goal percentage and three-point field goal percentage were worse than your team average, and how well you shot the ball could have stopped him from standing out. Guys who were fourth or worse on their team in all five of those per game categories probably don't make the Preseason Second Team too often. Carter is a different type of player. He shot two-pointers better than Cacok and Brantley and a little worse than Nathan. Carter had 2 foulouts, which is good for a player who averaged over 9 rebounds.

I don't agree with it, but I think the nod went to Brantley because he is a senior. That is commonly done in polls right or wrong.
I know it's way early, and he is a fantastic player, but is there any doubt that a senior Grant Riller won't win next year's preseason player of the year?

Tony just said that he is probably going to play 9-10 guys a game and is looking to add more defensive pressure with the increased depth and athleticism. Coach even referred to getting back to some things that he used to do successfully earlier in his coaching career alluding to extended pressure on defense and even potentially full court defensive pressure.

RE: 2018-19 MBB
Shaver just said Nathan has dropped even more weight this offseason and that Pierce is even more athletic, explosive and quicker off the ground which is amazing to think about.
Pierce has been back practicing for 2 days now after missing 2 months per Shaver at media day and sounds like he looks good but is a little rusty with his shooting since his injury was to his shooting hand/wrist.
Glad to have JP back and I truly think with all the new health and strength training our guys are going through we're going to have a very athletic team and it's going have a big impact across the board.
I think both Pierce and Knight are going to have huge years if they're healthy.
Paul Rowley referred specifically to both Luke (big and strong per Paul) and Chase bringing a lot to the team on the defensive end and helping them improve in a big way there.
Rowley's leadership is going to be huge this year. Paul specifically said he views a big part of his role as bridging the gap to the new players and helping integrate them into our well established culture of winning, team, and fun. He said Shaver is adding some new wrinkles on offense and that "Coach gets us open shots, we just have to knock them down." Pretty high compliment for Coach Shaver's system and coaching ability.

I enjoyed the interview and am looking forward to the season. It is setting up to be a wild ride. Paul also mentioned defense as a point of emphasis in the off season, along with Coach's comments.
I felt that our Juniors should have all gotten more recognition in the preseason all conference ballot and hope that they are inspired to play to prove tat ballot wrong by year end.
Go Tribe!

RE: 2018-19 MBB
Fine, Brantley is first team ahead of Nathan. But, after watching three practices and seeing Nathan on the court, I don't know how anyone in the CAA at the center position should be ahead of him. Barring injury, Knight is, in my opinion (and obviously Coach Shaver's), ready to have one of the greatest seasons ever for a Tribe big man.
He is quicker, stronger, more confident, and more mobile than in the past. His footwork and ball handling are at the highest collegiate levels. And, to top it off, his outside shooting is actually
a force now. And we shouldn't forget that his foul shooting, especially for a big guy, is at an elite level...77% last season. This for a guy who is going to draw many fouls this season.
He understands the game, his role, and what to do in intense situations.
And, equally important to all of the above, speaking to him for five minutes shows immediately
that he is committed to leading this team to a championship.

RE: 2018-19 MBB
With all of the focus on Nate, Justin, Luke's point role, and the incoming freshmen, I still think/hope that Matt may emerge this year as the forgotten third head in the monster. I think he displayed, at times last year, an end of game, killer instinct and confidence to want the ball in those situations. That intangible does not always show up in practice.
