I find it extremely hard to believe that half of Nike's customer base would oppose this campaign...much less oppose it enough to stop buying their items.

Nike and their marketing department are some of the best in the business. I have no doubt they did their research before letting this fly. I'm sure they expect to lose a small percentage of a portion of their current market, while picking up even more support in existing ones.

However, I agree with you that I'd like to see this campaign extended to other people than just Kaep. Aly Raisman is a no-brainer, IMO.

Nike sees the writing on the wall, and they want to be able to point back in future decades and say they took active steps to be on the right side of the struggle for equality. They’re going to take some heat from the racists right now, but it’s definitely the right long-term move from both moral and financial standpoints.

Interesting you label anyone who disagrees as a racist. You know, that type of thinking has electoral ramifications if you haven't noticed.

that's what makes it continuously funny as the dippos continually run their yammer....

What a silly comment. The vast majority of parents will buy their kids what they need and/or want for school and sports, regardless of brand. They certainly aren't going to be so myopic as to prevent getting what's needed because Nike decided to put someone they don't agree with on an ad.

My kid prefers the Nike cleats for soccer, so that's what I'm getting him, regardless of who's on their ad campaign. He has a pair of Adidas tennis shoes for every day right now, but chose Nikes before those.

Some kids' teams are required to wear certain brands - my son's soccer team has Nike kits, so that's what they'll be in.

RE: Nike selects Colin Kaepernick for ad campaign
I wasn't much for buying Nike in the first place since I consider their stuff to be overpriced. That said, being divisive on political and social issues rarely result in healthy profit margins. The best policy is to never let anyone know your company has a political/social stance on any issue. You might get a temporary sells bump from those that support your public stance, but that will wear off a lot quicker than those that oppose your stance remembering it and choosing your competitor instead.

You know what the biggest difference between boycotts on the left and right?

The ones on the right actually work.

Ask The Dixie Chicks, Dick's Sporting Goods, Target, Delta, and Yeti Coolers.

Then ask Chick-fil-a how effective the left's boycott of them has been.

Liberals have an unwarranted faith in experts. Like pollsters.

As for brilliant marketing companies always making great decisions-New Coke.

"...So why is Nike doing it? It's clearly for the attention. The news blew up as soon as it was released because Kaepernick is a polarizing figure who gets a lot of press. In all likelihood, it will not be a good move long-term for Nike to pick sides in the culture war, but they are getting quite a bit of free advertising in the short run."

You can call it what you want and Nike may bounce back and gain everything they lost back. But......

Quote:Nike Loses $3.75 Billion in Market Cap After Colin Kaepernick Named Face of ‘Just Do It’ Ads
https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/nike...41411.html

Nike just lost about $3.75 billion in market cap after announcing free agent NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick as the new face of its “Just Do It” ad campaign. It’s the 30th anniversary of the iconic TV and print spots.

At the time of this writing, the sneaker company’s intra-day market capitalization was $127.82 billion. On Friday, that number had been $131.57 billion.

Market capitalization is the market value of a publicly traded company’s outstanding shares.

I think most people could give a rat's arse about this either way actually...... This is the essence of marketing - Any Publicity is Good Publicity. More people talking about Nike today than in the last 12 months combined. Probably a Zero Sum Game after all the hub-bub settles down.

What left wing collectivists fail to realize is that if they ever actually start to succeed they will inevitably give rise to a far more potent and dangerous collectivism on the right.

Never assume any marketing dept, no matter the company and how previoulsy successful, can't lay an egg sometimes. Remember New Coke? Obviously too early to see how this plays out; however, I still don't understand why a company would want to put itself though such nonsense in the first place.

If I'm Adidas, I sign Buzz Aldrin right away and do a commercial where he plants a flag on the moon wearing Adidas. Then Run DMC stand up and salute the flag while the national anthem plays.

Again - where is this idea coming from that "half" of Nike's customers are pissed about this?

At the most, I'd guess that around 3-5% of their customer base are actually going to still be pissed off about this the next time they need to buy some shoes or athletic gear enough to choose another brand. The numbers they'll pick up during that time will likely vastly outweigh that.

There are certainly missteps made by smart marketing people, but I feel pretty sure they have some solid numbers on who their buyers are.
This isn't a "let's shake things up/New Coke" kind of thing. It's a calculated risk based on their market demo:

https://www.forbes.com/sites/pamdanziger...1fa343432c

Nike's plan to focus on 12 Key Cities in its Consumer Direct Offense: New York, London, Shanghai, Beijing, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Paris, Berlin, Mexico City, Barcelona, Seoul, and Milan. These are the places the company predicts will generate over 80% of Nike’s projected growth through 2020.

You think people in those 12 key cities worldwide are cutting up socks in protest of putting an NFL player in their ad? If so, think again.

Time to buy

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.marketw...8245AE6241

Shares of Nike Inc. sank in morning trade Tuesday, but Oppenheimer analyst Brian Nagel said any near-term “backlash” from its controversial ad featuring Colin Kaepernick should be overshadowed by the power of the message sent to its current roster of athletes.

The stock NKE-2.81% slumped 3.0% in midday trade, enough to lead the Dow Jones Industrial Average’s DJIA-0.24% decliners. It has now shed 3.8% since closing at a record $82.95 on Aug. 21.

It may very will be time to buy. Great point. I'd tend to give it a day or so, but that may not be a great idea, who knows.
