I think it's something like this:

Boycott In-N-Out Burger: Stupid snowflakes, you only draw attention to that which you hate!

Boycott Nike: The wrath of 65-year-old white guys shall bring the corporate power to its knees!

But haven't sussed out just yet how it cripples Nike to go out and buy new shoes just to have some to burn:

Nike down 2.5% this morning. With a $128,000,000,000 capitalization, they are losing $3.7 billion on the heels of the Colon Kapernick ad campaign.

Well done, schmucks.

Nike sees the writing on the wall, and they want to be able to point back in future decades and say they took active steps to be on the right side of the struggle for equality. They’re going to take some heat from the racists right now, but it’s definitely the right long-term move from both moral and financial standpoints.

Don't think so. There is definitely long term strategic planning at corporations; however, that's way too long of a horizon to project out. This is a snap judgement by someone in charge of marketing who thinks that this ad campaign is going to be a net positive TODAY. We'll see if that happens.

A decision of this magnitude was signed off on by a lot more than a SVP of Marketing, and it wasn’t done in a snap. Nike knows their market, and they see how this is going to play out. And you’re wrong if you think this is a massively long horizon.

Perhaps they were deliberate in this choice, but I wouldn't be so sure of that. Still, I don't think this was a multi-year analysis. Every major corporation knows their market - the key is whether they make the correct moves to either capture market share or get a higher premium for their products.

You do realize there is a large difference between the issue with In-N-Out and Nike.

One was about a small donation to the Republican party (by the way, they had a history of giving to both sides IIRC) and the other is about using a polarizing figure in a national add campaign....

Oh and 1 of the companies is a privately held company, while the other is a publically traded company.

Interesting you label anyone who disagrees as a racist. You know, that type of thinking has electoral ramifications if you haven't noticed.

My thoughts exactly.
I play tennis and volleyball too. Must be one of them European liberals.
Or does my kickball team bring it back to good old Amercan libruhl? But then there's the long distance running... and now I'm confused.
Anyway... closest I'll get to playing football is my armchair QB game.

I would guess Nike sees this as a calculated marketing effort. They will lose customers who disagree with Kaepernick, and will gain greater loyalty from those who support him. We shall see how that works.

You never pick an ad that loses customers unless you are a moron. You pick someone who adds only. Now if they thought they could tick off people who didn't buy, maybe they pick someone controversial. But Nike sells to about everyone.

Nobody is saying Kapernick can't protest the flag. People just don't want to pay to see it. And Nike is giving a big middle finger to half its customers. In and Out is just exercising their political rights. Objecting to that is Stalinist.

I find it hard to believe that Nike would go to bat for a QB who is washed up like Kap.

It would be one thing if this was a QB like Rodger, Brady, or even Goff.

I guess the thinking is to appeal to the neighborhoods where they support Kap and steal their shoes.

Get the popcorn ready.

FIFY

Elaborate more on those neighborhoods if you would. I’d love to hear more, although I suspect you won’t say anything else.

I heard this being discussed on NPR this morning stating this very thing. Is NPR Liberal enough for you?

Racist doesn't mean what you think. It means, "I hate you and don't want to hear what you have to say." Meaning, they have nothing to counter your points. They've lost the argument. Bigot is the same.

That's the disturbing thing. I had not realized how many well educated morons live in this country. Nike is not Madonna. Having people talk about you when most of those offended don't buy your stuff anyway is not Nike's situation.

What happens a lot of time is their is one moron at the top and everyone falls in line. Its always been the case that there were few people who would tell the emperor he had no clothes.

You want employees who will challenge you. I was working on an audit and the manager was having me do something that I thought was a total waste of time. I argued with him. But when he wouldn't be convinced, I did it and did it well. When I got my review at the end of the job, he acknowledged that.

But since Nike is in Portland and marketing people tend to be young, creative types, I suspect it was a room full of morons.

Sketchers is up.

Also, Nike can be an initial drain on others in the same sector until they de-couple some of the automatic trading decisions from an unrelated hit in one of the stocks in the sector.

I highly doubt Nike is being run people native Portlanders..... Yes maybe many of the underlings are, but not the decision makers.

Nike is betting on SJW's. It's a bet, and gambling like that is why Las Vegas looks the way it does....
