There would have been numerous defections if the change had not occurred.
??? The Toad was fired before Bailiff was hired. I agree Bailiff had a depleted depth chart, as does Bloomgren, but he had far better returning talent than Coach Bloom has.
Graham wasn't fired. He left for Tulsa. You may remember the bathroom negotiation.
Houston Owl is right, a big chunk of the 2006 team wasn't coming back if Graham returned. Might want to read the current articles about Maryland if you can't imagine why that might've been the case.
None of this has anything to do with the current team or QB situation.
Agreed. The only correction I would make is that it was the 2006 team that went 7-6 and thus the 2007 team would have been severely depleted.

Well that's some revisionist history if I've ever seen it.
Okay, my bad, but my point in response to Houston Owl's post is still valid. Toad was gone regardless, so additional defections were probably not going to happen regardless to whom we hired.

RE: Starting QB
Regarding Evan Marshman, here is a Coach Bloomgren quote from the Chronicle:
Quote:“At this point it is shut at two unless he forces the door open,” Bloomgren said of Marshman. “Right now he’s going to be comfortable in that three spot and it’s not out of the question that he could work his way up.”

Maybe we would have had numerous defections, but that appears to be a one off, not a trend. He did manage a decade of head coaching AFTER Rice.
And managed to beat Rice in every game he played against us. He's an *******, yes, but a far more competent coach than we like to pretend he is here.
Also, it is remarkable how much Todd Graham comes up still.

He may have been a competent coach, but his abuse of the players was extensive and very dangerous.
Rice had significant problems the season he was at Rice and would have significantly more problems had he stayed. We might not be having football discussions at this point had he remained at Rice.

He was a good coach, but an awful man. He cared nothing about his players. I'm honestly glad that it all finally caught up to him. He ran those players ragged. If the rumors are true, many were forced to play with serious injuries. You can't do that to kids. Rice needed to hire a "softy" at that point in time.

RE: Starting QB
Bailiff made sense at the time for one reason. At Texas State he replaced Manny Matsakis, who might be best described as Todd Graham without winning. Two years later, he Texas State in the playoffs. That tracks pretty closely with what happened at Rice. After a dreadful 2007, he had an outstanding 2008.
The problem came next, again paralleling Texas State. They fell back to below .500 for the second time in three years. Again, so did Rice. And that’s when I started having great concerns about Bailiff. Yeah, I complained in 2007, but he got me to look more favorably after 2008. But 2009-2011 pretty much convinced me that he was the wrong guy for us. People liked to say that he “got Rice.” But I don’t think he got what it takes to win at Rice. He kept trying to line up and do the same thing over and over, when it was obvious that we lacked the athletic ability to execute it.
If you want to play conservative football, you start with defense and the kicking game. Bailiff played conservatively without having either. I never quite understood how we won as often as we did.
If our mantra is going to be "pound the rock, run the clock, and play great defense," we had better see huge defensive improvement.

I agree. Even after discounting the competition, one can see that this kid is a real player. And he's got an excellent passing touch.

RE: Starting QB
Well, Bailiff and graham, for better r worse, are gone, and now we should be looking forward to the next era. This thread was about the QB situation. I for one am glad to see it cleared up somewhat. It looks to me at this point that Tyner will be the #1, or at least the 1A. Stankavage will see a lot of time, and may start some, but since he is a one year guy, I hope Tyner can hold on.
We have a lot of young QBs, and I expect at least a couple of them to develop into top players.
Unless both Tyner and Stankavage totally tank this year, I think we are in good shape at the QB position. JMHO.

Quality of Competition. Sunbelt dba CUSA is a remarkable place to rack up numbers while still being terrible.
Look at how all of a sudden LiAngelo Ball is the MVP of a league putting up 40+ ppg. Unprecedented success.

Thanks for getting us back on topic. I think Tyner will be first up and have a strong #2 that could easily manage games for us if necessary.

The thing that impressed me about Marshman was how he kept his composure and found open receivers even while running for his life.

He was actually too bad a person to be a good coach. You will note that he never lasted very long anywhere. I thought that in many ways he was what we needed, a bull in a China shop, and you can't do that without being something of an a-hole. I'm glad he was here 12 months, but I'm glad it didn't last 13. Or as a conversation that IIRC I had with PTH.
"I don't know if we'd still have football if Todd Graham hadn't come."
"I don't know if we'd still have football if he hadn't left."

That's what people call a "change agent". A necessary evil, but one you better exorcise before it kills you... literally.

A talent we may have great need of this year.
Has anyone observed Marshman in practice reps or scrimmage reps yet? I'm getting a Mason Fine type of vibe. For those that don't know, Mason Fine was an unheralded QB out of Peggs, Oklahoma that eventually won the starting job at North Texas. Granted, I think that Fine's high school resume was better than Marshman's.
