Very interesting. In less than 3 years Jon Alger has gone from covertly penning an anti-COA letter to approving COA for all.

What is the math? $4200 x 400 student athletes?

We don't know that yet. COA isn't a fixed fee. There are differences on what schools pay and it could even vary from sport to sport. Will also be interesting on how this works for athletes on partial scholarships, which many of our football players are and very many are in other sports, particularly on the women's side and the olympic sports. Basketball gets $4,200. Would be surprised if all athletes get that same amount.

My thoughts as well. Alger writes a manifesto against the COA a few years ago and now JMU offers the COA???...and sneaks the COA into offer letters w/o a DNR article?

I'm not saying Houston was the only one advocating for this, but it's been pretty tremendous the impact he's had on this administration. What a difference winning makes. And I'd be remiss without giving a shoutout to our donors. It's not like they rip this money off the trees on the quad or out of some slush fund.

Correct. To expand, only our MBB, WBB, W Tennis, and Volleyball are head count sports and must give full schollies to the student athletes unless they are walk-ons. Lots of partials are given out. I can only speculate, but guessing that an athlete who gets a 50% scholly also gets 50% COA. BDK can do the math, but off the cuff, I would say less than half our athletes are full scholly. I know you have to be a rare and special player to get a full scholly in BB and it wouldn't surprise me if Megan Good is the only one on our softball team with a full ride.

I recall seeing the numbers last year for Bball...pretty sure it was only about $1500 per year...totally makes sense as it's near impossible to be an athlete and study (and drink) and hold a PT job for surviving...I lived with a couple of walk-ons and there is no way.

What I don't get is why this money goes to kids that may not need it....would much rather see this as need-based, and kick the funds to other student scholarships

Maybe beating fcs teams outside of NDSU and a few others by 50 is not good enough. Let's beat them by 80.

Something has to be brewing somewhere. Conservative JMU would not over build and over everything the entire CAA conference without a good reason.

Which CAA teams offer the COA now?

The AAC is not as much a long shot as it was 5-8 years ago.

- The AAC has/will lose members that may take their P6 attitude down a notch
- JMU stadium - check
- JMU coliseum - check
- JMU all other facilities - check
- JMU budget - check (I think)...I don't know all the legal rules but the budget is big compared to G5s
- JMU COA - check...no catch up period, this will be in place
- JMU basketball - see coliseum (no pressure Lou)
- Virginia market - check

The more articles we see and sports shows we hear about TV revenue being down and travel costs up for G5 +++

I've not been a fan of how JMU communicates but no denying things are on the up and up.

I still would like more conference communication even if it is just opinion and dreams, hopes....anything.

I know they have top-notch softball, not quite as good as us but really strong the past few years. They beat Oklahoma in the 2017 tournament.

Awesome job by all involved that made COA happen across the board at JMU.....this includes Donors, Coaches, Bourne, King, and Alger. With our facilities and COA this makes a strong statement about the commitment to athletics across the board.

I know the family of a 2018 football recruit and it caught my ear when his mom told me back in early June that next year her son would be getting a stipend. I was not sure if it was accurate or not so did not mention it.

I haven't been on here in a while but want to state publicly how very PROUD I am of MY SCHOOL for stepping up to the plate and taking this step. There is no non-P5 DI program in the country which is better than ours. Not that we always succeed and win championships in every sport, but, by God, we do our very best to do so, and give our athletes every opportunity they need to succeed.

Add Delaware Athletics to this bolded list above.

Some behind the curtain info... Delaware Athletics made the move to offer COA for football, so then JMU felt they needed to follow suit. Once JMU decided to offer for football they had to offer for all sports due to title IX.
