Liberty Bowl Renovations

Quote:A council committee voted unanimously this afternoon to recommend approval of $2.5 million to renovate the home locker room during the 3:30 p.m. council meeting. If any money is left over, the city will also paint support areas and improve the sound system, said council member Reid Hedgepeth, who sponsored the resolution.

"The council also voted last year to tack on a $1 facilities fee on single and seasonal tickets and to spend $100,000 to study an expansion of the stadium's capacity."

Why? The stadium is too large as it is.

the contractor is giving a $50,000 kickback to the council, $10,000 for each councilman that votes for it.

Most likely they are just authorizing spending money raised in the tourism zone. If so then none of it could be used for city schools anyway.

Schools get $1 billion a year, and still are pitiful. $1-2 million for some stadium upgrades is not unreasonable. In fact a little bit more wouldn't hurt for a facility hosts two of the biggest city events every year.

With a new tenant, maybe we can overcome our blue guilt, and move back to campus where we belong.

The city of Memphis pays nothing for schools. This was the point of giving up charter.

RE: Liberty Bowl Renovations
I’d be all for a somewhat larger capacity if all the seats were chairback. The point of this study is to see what changes need to be made in order to accommodate concerts by today’s standards. Capacity, but more importantly, stage construction capabilities (larger field access for trucks). It is also my understanding that additional capacity could come from expanded luxury boxes and stadium clubs. With that would come a renovated press box, supposedly.

State law says that they must pay what they did before they gave up charter.
