Not sure about Colorado State.. Furman's ex coach had a history there.

You’re right, he did. Not arguing at all, but who would you rather have between those two? My guess is Colorado State would rather have Forbes if they had the chance.

Not saying this is wrong but not 1 MTSU or ETSU beat writer has said this was the case.

More often than not, these things aren't played out in the paper and are done through back channels and agents. Pretty sure Forbes has said many times that he would not discuss job offers with the media. I am friends with a person from Murphreesboro who was involved in the process and he told me that Forbes was their #1 target and MTSU offered him 1 million dollars a year for 5 years. I thought it was impressive that he turned down that kind of $$$ to stay at ETSU.

I have no insider info regarding this offer, but what ETSU4Life says is very true. Having worked as a coach in college athletics, a lot of offers never reach the media if they are declined. I could easily see this being true. With that said, I have no knowledge if this particular instance occurred.

If that did happen, I can completely understand. That's a small raise, not life changing for his family. He has said it will take a life changing offer to get him to leave us at this point and I truly believe him. He and his family seem extremely happy here and I think it will take a $2 million or more a year offer to get him to even look at them seriously.

From the CUSA Board

(03-26-2018 07:39 AM)ThreeifbyLightning Wrote:  We went after Grant, Forbes and Odom. We simply weren't willing to pony up enough to make them move. So, from that perspective you can say that MT isn't as committed to being the top program outside the power conferences. That would be a fair statement. Though I like the fact that we at least made an effort. That said, I believe we offered Forbes well over what anyone else is making in this league. I believe he expects to be a P5 in a month from now. And Odom wanted other concessions we wouldn't make. There are others who know the details better if they want to weigh in (I really had no interest in following the search that closely), but we simply hired the best coach on the board who would accept the offer we were putting out there.

P5 or bust. Middle was in the top 25 a week before the tournament and didn't go. They might be in CUSA, but at this time, it's a one bid league. Pretty much the same situation as here...minus the raise. Is it worth uprooting your family and starting over? Guess the answer was no.

In the minds of a P5 school, I still think Forbes has some proving to do here before he is considered for one of those openings. We (he) did not finish strong, and those last three losses kept us out of, at least the NIT.

I agree. Had we not lost 4 out of our last 5 after starting 22-4 then things could be different right now. Could also be different had we not played so poorly in the Socon final. Forbes is smart too, despite losing a lot this year I think he realizes the potential to be good again next season and even better in 2019-20 as long as we don't lose anyone.

RE: 2018 Coaching Rumors/Openings
I would imagine his "body of work" at ETSU and his "body of work" as a very successful Asst Coach is "enough" for him to get a P5 job. It will more than likely come down to "fit" and "who" is his competition for any opening that he's considered for. At the end of the day, there really aren't that many P5 jobs available each year, especially this year. Just glad he's our coach......

It’s also possible he’s already had calls from P5 schools and could even be working on something. Definitely no inside info here, but it would be another explanation for turning down MTSU. We’ll know in the next couple of weeks.

No, it's not. That's why MT ended up with the guy from UNC-A. For him, it was a huge raise and a chance to build on what Kermit was doing in the 'Boro. Plus, I'll be honest here. Murfreesboro SUCKS. The traffic sucks, the schools suck, he would end up living out off 840 somewhere either near Blackman (we've got a kid on the football team from there) or moving out to Williamson County so his kids could go to BGA or somewhere like that.
Plus, it's the same argument I had with a UNC-Charlotte fan. Why would he trade a one bid league for another one bid league? The lowest he might have been looking was Memphis or UConn, and they're covered.
He's smart hedging his bets, wait until the FBI investigation is done and see where those chips fall. If nothing comes open, stay another year, get to the NCAAs, win a game or two, then take your shot at a P6 school.

As has been mentioned on here Jason Shay has already been linked to the Western Carolina job. Also B.J. Mckie is being mentioned at USC-Upstate as a viable candidate. Think this could happen if B.J. wants it.
Former Forbes assistant Brian Collins is apparently interested in the Tennessee State job as well.

The Forbes coaching tree may be ready to bloom.

HoopDirt is reporting that WCU will announce new head coach today, likely to be Mark Prosser, associate head coach at Winthrop.

Chris Mack is off to Louisville. Xavier job is now open, but there is a belief that they could hire from within for the HC position.

They have done that with their last 2 hires (Miller and Mack).

Fairly comprehensive article about WCU's hire of Mark Prosser at Mid-Major Madness. Though, if I were a WCU fan, I would be blushing at their AD's characterization of the hire as a "slam dunk." He probably has been waiting for years to use that one. Then again he may use it every time he announces a head coach hiring regardless of the sport.

A not particularly revealing overview of some mid-major coaches who may be on lists to fill some vacancies. Appended here because Wes Miller and Coach Forbes top the list.
