It all depends on the money. I didn't realize this when I posted about ECU, but they paid Jeff Lebo $500,000 a year out of a $44M athletic budget. No wonder they hung onto him as long as they could!
Kermit Davis was making $575,000 at MTSU before taking the Ole Miss job. Forbes' salary is $400,000 with a $200,000 retention bonus paid annually, so we're already giving him more than he'd make in base pay at MTSU. Plus, there's no guarantee you'll get looked at as an at-large again at MTSU. It'd be a risky move for a modest raise. Now, if ECU or MTSU were to offer something around $1M, standing pat looks a lot less attractive all of a sudden. But there's no indication they'll do that - MTSU can't afford it.
Maybe Forbes' only move really is a power conference. That would be odd, IMO, to not jump to a multi-bid mid-major as a stepping stone, but not unwelcome (and the general decline of multi-bid mid-majors may be a factor in that). I will say, I applaud ETSU for stepping up to preempt potential poaching of Forbes by aggressively negotiating extensions and bonuses over the last couple of seasons. First Sander and now Carter have been excellent at rewarding the success he is having here and doing everything possible to keep him here. Looks good for future coaches too who look at us and see an attractive position where winning games is met with tangible rewards.
Kermit was making 800,000 a year after his last raise I believe. We countered Ole Miss's offer at 1.2 million. It obviously not enough. His contract for Ole Miss is 2.5 million 5 year deal with bonuses and easy access to the NCAA tournament. You can finish .500 in the SEC and get in the tournamnet. He also is from Mississippi and would be close to his parents and daughter so there was obviously a lot of reasons to leave.
We have not offered the position to any coach. We hired a firm out of Atlanta to help with the search.
Kermit's base salary was $575k according to MTSU's HR department. Now, that easily could have included $225k in retention bonuses that aren't listed in the base salary but get lumped in anyway, but that number is what's on record.
I wouldn't be surprised if y'all got a decent hire, but as we have learned over here in JC in the last 10 years, it can be hit-and-miss sometimes.

A report from March of last year about his new deal
The deal announced Friday will run through 2024 and puts Davis at a $750,000 total salary ($575,000 base, $175,000 in TV and radio obligations).
750K was the number newspapers were talking about when comparing his new deal with Ole Miss.

RE: 2018 Coaching Rumors/Openings
Forbes' Assistants and current head coaching openings.
As has been mentioned on here Jason Shay has already been linked to the Western Carolina job. Also B.J. Mckie is being mentioned at USC-Upstate as a viable candidate. Think this could happen if B.J. wants it.
Former Forbes assistant Brian Collins is apparently interested in the Tennessee State job as well.
The Forbes coaching tree may be ready to bloom.

I would sure hate to lose McKie (or Shay, for that matter). He will be a great coach for somebody in the not-too-distant future.

Yes, either of them might be a good solid replacement for Forbes if he chooses to leave.

A situation to monitor:
David Padgett did not get the job at Louisville on a full time basis. Xavier’s Chris Mack is apparently who they are targeting. Xavier’s brass saw Coach Forbes’ abilities front and center. That’s a job that worries me if Mack were to bolt.

Facing the NCAA and the FBI, Louisville will be lucky to hire a high school coach.

Everybody involved is gone from Louisville. The school isn’t facing the FBI and is already on probation from hooker-gate. They’ll get a quality coach.
Also, Brian Collins will be the new guy at TEnnessee State. They are wrapping up formalities today/tomorrow.

The school isn’t facing the FBI...
Yet. Will depend on whether there were financial improprieties related to the Adidas scandal.

Guess Niko never unpacks his suitcase. To Colorado State with a 79-87 head coaching record...and a million dollar salary.

Well he took over a bad Furman team and got them back to back to back 20+ wins in 4 years. At Drake he took over a team coming off 3 straight 20+ loss season and got them to 500 in first year. Not saying he is great but he seems to have turned around the two teams he coached prior to getting this job, probably why he got it.

RE: 2018 Coaching Rumors/Openings
Medved was an assistant at Colorado State for six years before he came to Furman. (He had been an assistant at Furman for about the same number of years before that.) He obviously had connections to CSU that may have played into the decision. CSU went to the NCAA tourney his last two years at the school and haven't been back since he left. The CSU AD says Medved will be earning about the Mountain West average, which is $600K to 700K. The previous coach was getting a million.

And for the record, if we had not given Forbes that raise, he could’ve been gone to either one of these last couple of jobs. Colorado State or MTSU would’ve hired him over these other coaches. Smart move again by Scott Carter.

Not sure about Colorado State.. Furman's ex coach had a history there.
