I'd love to see Mick get some national coach of the year live but i feel like it's going to Holtman... which is completely reasonable.

I don't like how the benches are on the wrong side of the court at Auburn. Watching coaches freak out is one of the best parts of college basketball.

UC now has nation’s longest home win streak and is tied with VA for longest active overall win streak at 15.

Looks like we'll slide up to a 2-seed in Lundardi's next edition. Any chance we finish the season fighting for that final 1 spot or have we reached our peak?

It does not seem to be a metric anyone uses, but UC must have the best "worst loss" in the country. Unlike everyone else, we haven't suffered a bad loss.

(Except for Virginia, that is).

Mick has been terrific. Holtmann has been a miracle worker. Really impressive job by him.

It's really pretty simple... Want a "1 Seed"?

Run the table out.
Seriously.
Run the table--including the AAC tournament--and you're in as a 1.

Yep...Holtmann turned a team who went 17-15 into one that's potentially top 10 this season. Oh by the way, that team lost their best overall player (JaQuon Lyle), a senior wing who led them in scoring (Marc Loving), and only added one player who is making significant contribution (Kaleb Wesson, who looks like he could very easily turn into a POY guy in a few years too). To add to that, he turned Keita Bates Diop from a fringe starter on a .500 team into a borderline lottery pick and POY candidate. If anyone else gets serious looks as COY, that person should have their voting privileges revoked.

Getting KBD back from injury is the biggest key. He started 33 games 2 years ago and then missed 18 games with an injury last season. Not a fringe starter - he just got hurt last year.

I don't know anyone who was sad to see Marc Loving graduate. A decent player who could never be quite what they needed him to be.

That's the thing...he was still a decent player.

RE: KBD...he was a 10 point per game guy over the last two seasons. This is a completely different player than we saw in those seasons and I think that has a ton to do with how Holtmann is utilizing him. In the games he played last year they were 6-3...but 1-3 against teams with a pulse.

Yep. Similar to what a Gonzaga has done in the past. However, that is hard as shat to do - not impossible - but difficult. What's the highest seed during the Mick Cronin era? 5 seed I think? Based on our current trajectory, we will do better than that and that is very exciting indeed.

Keita Bates Diop was like a top 30 recruit. Jae'Sean Tate and Wesson were both studs too. Holtmann is a very good coach, but it's not like he's working with a bunch of scrubs.

I agree with this. He took an OSU team that had underachieved the last couple years and has done a really great job. I think there are good arguments for other coaches to be named National Coach of the Year as well... Bennett and Virginia were (idiotically) picked 6th in a loaded ACC and are running away with it. I feel like he could be coach of the year every single year. Hell even Mack at Xavier the way X keeps winning those close games. With their defensive liabilities its incredible to me that they've been as good as they have.

"BearcatMark" question: When you beat a team (or lose) does the tier they were at when you played them stay the same or do the tiers bounce up and down. Some of UC's wins were close to the tier lines and could possibly change, however, it doesn't seem fair they should ever move after the game ( where it would concern you) is played because of injuries and things that could happen in the future.

Those teams will move tiers depending on where teams are in the moment. It's based on where the teams are when the committee is doing the seeding. If Temple keeps winning they could end up tier 1 even for the home game. UCF could go the other way for the road game. It's reasonable, but imperfect that's why you aren't just ranking teams by metrics. Humans are supposed to dig deeper than the team sheets (though team sheets always tell you more than anything else).

Never said he was. I've been on here multiple times singing the praises of Kaleb Wesson...but I know that Bates Diop and Tate "underperformed" for the past two to three years in comparison to their potential. The fact that he has turned around two "seniors" the way that he has is a testament to his coaching ability. To me, taking a team that was that bad and making them this good is much better than taking a team that was already incredibly good and making them slightly better (Xavier and Virginia).
