The A&T player should be reprimanded for that alone.

And the racist statements weren't immature?05-nono

I'm not saying they weren't, but one thing about this whole debacle is the public doesn't know the context in which things were said. The comment of "at least I have a dad" isn't exactly racist unless it's being used to assume most black people don't have dad's in their lives. And as for other racist remarks the App State player made, the A&T player hasn't revealed other racist remarks that he claims were said.
He is only saying there "were other racist remarks." If there were other racist remarks that were made, surely one of those was more notable than him only saying "at least I have a dad." All anyone know's is what the A&T player has stated on his Twitter and using those as the facts of the story.

No one has heard the story from the other side at all.

App State didn't suspend a player and a coach based on a tweet. If the school was comfortable enough to suspend then they knew something inappropriate took place. I'm just curious as to why you decided to strap the cape on all in the name of THIS cause?

Yes, but you also have to understand that in this current political climate, if someone says an athlete of a certain school said something racist, misogynist, sexist, etc., then the public at large puts the athlete and school on a hot bed of coals until something happens. Universities want to avoid bad PR as much as possible.

There are multiple stories out there within the past year where someone has been accused of something such as racism, the public learns about it and takes charge, only to find out that the story was falsified.

What kind of question is that? I'm not okay with anyone receiving any kind of death threats, that's never ok. And at 20 years old you're no kid, you're old enough to know what and what not to say.

Except for the death threats, I disagree. A 20 year old making racist comments while representing his school shouldn't be given any kind of opportunities to continue representing that school. He can get loans and pay for school like most everyone else now. Outside of the death threats (which I guarantee weren't all from black people), I'm perfectly fine with this garbage person being scattered throughout the net. Without the internet, it's likely coach Lake would have given the player a "wtf" and then swept this incident under the rug.

I don't agree with that whatsoever. No one deserves to have their name tarnished all over the internet because they may have said something stupid that they may regret. If we're being honest on here, I'd be willing to bet most of us in this thread have said things at some point in our lives that could be deemed offensive by someone. And in that case, would you ever want your name plastered all over Twitter so that people could begin to dig up your address, what kind of car you drive, your parent's names, and have death threats made toward you?

Well for one, if App State has suspended him and the coach because of public pressure, then that shouldn't happen.

If App State has in fact talked to both player and coach, heard their story, and deemed everything the A&T player said to be true, then both should certainly be suspended.

Maybe, but that's the way the world works now. In the age of Social Media, you must be very aware of everything you say and do, because your words can easily be used against you.

It doesn't really matter what the A&T kid to set him off. You still can't respond the way he did. Maybe about 20 years ago you could have gotten away with it. But this isn't 20 years ago. In the court of public opinion, it is guilty until proven otherwise, and that's all that matters.

Exactly. The judge and jury of social media put the University in a no win situation.

Snowflake is very descriptive. Those who are ‘snowflakes’ know exactly who I’m referring to, and generally don’t like it and/or deny it. And yes, you are a snowflake.

If you're weak-willed enough to be baited into a racial verbal jab you're not strong-willed enough to represent Appalachian State. I'm glad this turd isn't going to continue to represent the school that I attended and continue to support with my hard earned money. Coach Lake being suspended for 4 matches tells me all I need to know about this event.

Good riddance.

Times have changed. The player knew he was taking a risk when he said it. The coach new he was taking a risk by defending the behavior despite whatever provoked it.

The days of crying wolf are here and now. The self centered self serving nature of folks today will most certainly bring with it an effect. Only time will tell what that is but common sense and fairness for all will win the day. This incident will go away like the rest soon enough.

This is why it's a good reason to handle these things internally as much as possible rather than putting the kid on public display in a pillory in today's less-than-reasonable social climate. But no, this is racial insensitivity we're talking about so all rational thinking has to go out the window.

Let's face it, if some ugly remark was made about almost any other characteristic other than color, it would merit a strong rebuke from the coach, maybe some sprints, and an apology. But because it's race, off with his head.

If I were the coach here, I'd suspend the player for a match and arrange for him to eat lunch with the A&T player (Greensboro and Boone aren't that far apart).

Probably not a very popular take, but that's the way I see it.

"If he had said anything that wasn't racist, he wouldn't be treated like a racist."

What an astute young man you are.

This is too true. He’ll likely be a twitter target for a while yet, but in a social media world like ours, the next obscene offensive act is just around the corner and all those people will move on...unless he does something else to keep the flames hot.

I'm glad this turd isn't going to continue to represent the school that I attended and continue to support with my hard earned money. Coach Lake being suspended for 4 matches tells me all I need to know about this event.
